To me, the best part of this game is the ring's journey, which limits the time. The game is much shorter than a standard Risk, yet just as fun, if not more so because you have to be aggressive to ensure victory before time runs out.
The other edition you're talking about was just called Risk: Lord of the Rings. Allthough the board is a lot smaller and doesn't have the Gondor, Mordor and Haradwaith regions, there is an expansion for that edition, which does come with a board with those regions on it. Some different miniatures are included for the armies worth 3 and 5, which can be included in the normal LOTR Risk game, but they are also used to play an entirely different game for 2 players on the other side of the expansion's board, called The Siege of Minas Tirith. A fourth red and a third black die, as well as a few extra leaders are included for that purpose as well. The expansion seemed to be released in Europe only initially, while the base game was also released elsewhere. They then came with the Trilogy Edition, leaving non-European buyers of the original disappointed and complaining about the lack of regions Mordor and Gondor. If I'm not mistaken, they later released a limited run of the expansion for the North American market, but too late for a lot of fans, who replaced the original with the Trilogy Edition. I don't know exact details on how it all worked out there, but at least it was bad marketing. Even European fans started to prefer the Trilogy Edition in spite of the expansion being there, because the rules of The Siege of Tirith were very ambiguous. There have been attempts to clarify the rules, but they were unsuccessful. And there is very little information on the game.
played this game for hours with a friend, i kept the sea routes secret till i sprung the best surprise attack on him. went from gondor to umbar in one attack. he flipped the board. I take that as a victory
We adapted the rules and only allowed players to move their pieces to the next port or ship illustration, whichever comes first. We allowed players to stop at a port but not attack if they preferred, so they could chill until their next turn and move on.

Game of Thrines Risk is another great game i highly reccommend! It builds on a lot of the things mentioned such as ports that give out gold each turn, allowing you to buy Maester cards that can be used both offensively and defensively!
I didn't think this game was that old. I had an a copy but never knew how to play and didn't have friends to play with. My parents bought it for me because it was LotR and I had watched LotR: FotR on VHS. I am gonna have to add this to my list of things to treat myself with.
Anybody know if there's a digital version of this game out there? I have the board version, but I'd love to be able to play it on my phone with my family without having to commit hours to the game
To me, this is the best board game ever (must be trilogy edition). If you play without the ring (game is too short playing with the Fellowship cards and ring), and make a house rule that the bridge blocking card can also stop leaders, the game is perfect.
Hello! Why you use not the Battleground zone? It is different the combat with this.. because you must move 3 attackers and 2 defenders.. and the combat continue to last men on ground. After you can do another round woth other men's. Why use not?

I see on eBay or Amazon, RISK LOTR TE from 2003 labelled "from Parker & Brothers" than run into $130 or so. However, I see in Amazon same label as title, except that it's "from Hasbro", and they run about $55 or so. What are the differences between the two? Is the old one is a better box, better art, etc?
Probably bit late (1 year ago), generally in Risk you can maneuver troops between joined territories that you occupy. You can't move troops between territories if there isn't a path through territories you occupy.

Cool game but the reinforcement setup round takes awhile with each player 1 battalion per turn and 37 or so battalions to place individually.

I know that they did two versions of it. They did the trilogy Edition and then a regular edition. The trilogy Edition has a complete map.
