That all changed in 2011 when he was facing John Cena at Money in the Bank. Story was his contract was expiring at MitB and he was gonna win the WWE title from Cena and take it with him (his contract truly was expiring too). So on June 25th 2011 (I remember because I was there in Vegas) he attacked Cena at the end of Raw and walked up the ramp, sat down with his legs crossed, and gave one of the most iconic promos of all time. Many said it was his "Austin 3:16" moment and they were right. After that Punk was pretty much a made man in wrestling. He was the first star since Cena became the face of the WWE to out draw and out sell Cena in ratings and merch. He won the WWE title that year at Survivor Series (full circle?) And kept it from then all the way up to Royal Rumble 2013 where he lost it to the Rock. He then had a great match with Taker at WM 29, came back after that to have an outstanding feud with Heyman and his guys. Including Lesnar. Then in early 2014 he asked for time off because he was burned out and WWE fired him for being out for too long. I'm not taking Punk's side or WWE's. He had some grievances but Punk can be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to work with. Having said that, WWE is ran by adults who constantly put aside their personal animosities in order to put on the best show possible. That's why he's back in WWE. AEW had leaders who refused to do that very thing.

I literally never ever ever get tired of watching these! I was that kid who would rent VHS tapes or record the pay-per-view and watch the big moments over and over because I love crowd reactions. Wyatt's return - absolutely! I was so proud and happy for him. That was one of the best feel-good moments all year. I could watch that clip all day. And the Undertaker - no words needed. It takes a LOT in today's world to make most of us feel like kids again, and love or hate CM Punk...returns like this accomplish that for those of us that have been following wrestling for decades. I fell asleep because I had gotten up for work at 2am that day, and trying to stay up to the end of a WWE event is near impossible. The FIRST thing I saw on my phone when I picked it up at 2am was "CM Punk returns at Wargames!" and that made the snooze button irrelevant.
I can truly say i thought I needed the aew debut but watching this whole ppv and it being my first since punk left. Hands on head, jaw dropped, tears in eyes. I’ve never been this shocked and happy. Punk is HOME.

I'm from South Africa and here all across Africa WWE has its own channel and its the only wrestling we watch I've had of impact and stuff but no one watches anything but WWE here, if u say wrestling WWE comes up nothing else I didn't know that Punk came back. I literally never ever ever get tired of watching these! I was that kid who would rent VHS tapes or record the pay-per-view and watch the big moments over and over because I love crowd reactions. Wyatt's return - absolutely! I was so proud and happy for him. That was one of the best feel-good moments all year. I could watch that clip all day. And the Undertaker - no words needed. I loved his American Badass character the most, 'cause he didn't give a f*** either. Cody Rhodes' pop at WrestleMania was felt, too. That's a different situation, but it was so cool. Punk has that energy of Stone Cold and The American Badass. It does feel like acting or scripted - even if it is. He feels like a real person. Plus, I'm a guy who prefers to go against the grain. Lol!

@sonomni I'm personally on the fence about Randy just because I'm so used to him, but he's been extremely missed. I'll throw in Brock Lesnar when he's away for a long time. But, Punk's had the biggest emotional pops and on two different promotions within a couple of years. That puts him up there for me.

Grown adults getting this excited for a moment is heart warming. It takes a LOT in today's world to make most of us feel like kids again, and love or hate CM Punk...returns like this accomplish that for those of us that have been following wrestling for decades. I fell asleep because I had gotten up for work at 2am that day, and trying to stay up to the end of a WWE event is near impossible. The FIRST thing I saw on my phone when I picked it up at 2am was "CM Punk returns at Wargames!" and that made the snooze button irrelevant.
Couldn't agree more. As we grow older it becomes harder to get worked by wrestling, but when you do it is the best!
