It's on public land. I think that says all that needs to be said. Plus, the whole skier vs. snowboarder thing should be in the past. It came about because early snowboards & snowboarders were much, much slower than skiers and tended the clog the slopes and get in the way. Or how about a shredders only mountain. You have to pass a ski/snowboard test of going down a double back with pow and going off rock drop-offs. Freeriders paradise.
Alright so I've read through quite a few comments down below and I'm gonna say this to make sure everyone understands. For context I am a level 3 certified ski instructor as well as level 3 freestyle and level 2 board instructor. I've been skiing literally my entire life and work at Snowbird, which is a mountain right next to Alta that you can actually ski to and from. The reason why Alta does not allow boarders is because people in Utah take snow very seriously, we love our powder. Not all, but a LARGE majority of boarders shovel good snow down to the bottom of a run (also known as snowplowing) for it to pile up and that makes the top of runs, which are also considered the best, to be icy and unfavorable. Bird has quite a few boarders and if it's not actively snowing that day the top of bird will almost always be icy and I will just ski over to Alta where there will be powder. Most novice skiers and boarders snow plow because they slide their way to the bottom, but most skiers in that area are already capable of handling themselves in a turn and know how to carve through the snow and create a small footprint, but most boarders will slide down on their heels and push the snow off. I know for a fact it is different in other regions because I used to also work at Big Bear in California when I was in high school and the skiers there are garbage and are the ones doing the snowplowing, but at Bird/Alta the vast majority of snowplows are boarders. That being said I do not agree with snowboarders not being allowed on Alta because after all it is a massive mountain and plenty of room for everyone to share. For those that read this, if you have any questions or want to argue my points go ahead I'll be sure to reply to you.
The sports cost pretty much the same... snow sports in general are for the well-off. If you really want to talk about separating the rich from the poor how about lift tickets at a lot of resorts now costing upwards of $120/day. It's getting insane up there.
Actually, skis are much more expensive compared to snowboards. A good set of skis will set you back 500+ dollars plus bindings and boots. You're looking at about nearly 1000+ plus dollars once you factor in bindings, etc. With snowboards, you can find boards that are amazing for less than 500 and get bindings n boots from Burton for a pretty low price. I specced a burton board out and i could have a snowboard ready for the slopes for around ~700
Actually, they're really not. I bought a brand new pair of skis this season with bindings for $650 (Rossignol Sky 7 HD, hardly an entry level ski). It all depends on what you want out of a pair of skis or a board, and how willing you are to hunt for a deal. There are entry level skis with bindings for under $400, and expert level boards from Burton for $2,000, and vise versa. Neither sport is cheap, nor is one really cheaper than the other.
im a beginner skier and ive always been putt off by the sport because of how snowboarders and skiers have a thing, which i always thought was incredibly pathetic and off putting
Alta spends a lot of money telling people they're the best resort in a place with lot of really good ski resorts nearby. That might not be true, but it is a very good ski area, and if you're a snowboarder it's forbidden fruit.
@@bmcunning Unless you live at Alta it's farther away than Snowbird. For most people it's n more than 10 to 30 minutes closer than any of the other great ski areas that are nearby.
sjpro1 im a snowboarder and i see both sitting in the middle of runs, mostly younger ages and yes its annoying. Tho i see alot more damage to cut back areas on groomers done by skis, not boards.
C'mon...Snowboarders as a whole scrape the mountain and resist traditions that conserve powder for everyone. Alta also has a ton of wack terrain - ups and downs, traverses and flats poorly suited to boards. Five a-holes sitting on boards stranded in the middle of a frozen lake runout track ruins the the whole thing. No body wants that mountain scraped to shine and punk kids sitting in piles instead of getting some vert. That's why.
Here's the solution... snowboarders have the right to use the mountain... but if the lifts are owned by the resort... then the resort can ban them from the use of their equipment and any other facilities that are owned by the resort. If the boarders want to use the mountain... they can feel free to trek up on foot.
You can trek up pre and post season but they understandably won't let you trek up in bounds during season. You can access it via the backside of baldy at snowbird. And then use the public bus to get back down to the better resort 😂.
A new mountain would tank but Alta will do just fine. It's been around for a long time and attracts a lot of skiers that hate boarders. For now we just have to enjoy snowbird while we look at Alta.
Haha, did you even watch the video. They aren't trying to ban snowboarding. Snowboarding has never been allowed there. Thats what the entire thing is about.... so. did they go out of business?
They didn't choose to be a snowboarder, they are just naturally badass. Also its public land, and though the land is leased, its only to operate lifts, not to manage the land. and if a snowboarder were to sneak onto the land and go down the hill without getting on the lift they would be discriminated against. Think of it like if you chose to be transgender and that is discrimination.
@Fooz , I didn't choose the snowboard life, the snowboard life choose me. Your argument is as dumb as you shouldn't allow gay marriage as they "choose" it... (Key word=dumb)
No. Sliding down a mountain on a particular piece of metal/plastic component is incomparable to whether gay marriage is a choice. With respect to this case, I don't like it but it is a legal business model; the exclusivity makes it more attractive for skiers, it makes it distinguishable from other ski resorts. Any individual is allowed but they have to ski instead of snowboard; its not attacking the individual, its literally preventing a particular form of sliding down a mountain regarded as dangerous by many (not by me as a matter of fact).
Alta is a very traverse mountain, not that sweet for riding but should be allowed. Watch an expert rider and realize he carves the same as a skier, so quit the argument that we ruin the snow and create moguls. It is about sliding on snow and having fun.
Wait... people actually blamed boarders for moguls more than skiers? You know, because Alta is totally mogul free. I'm a skier and have been to Alta... guess I just imagined those car-sized bumps all over the mountain.
Eric They need to realize moguls are natural and hide in the woods some days and some days they come out, it's like how the deer turn into elk at 9500 ft.
preferredstucco well there are all those beginner snowboarders who do not know what they are doing just sliding down the mtn sideways, scraping all the snow off. Expert snowboarders are perfectly fine
I'm a snowboarder and I dislike this skiers only policy. .We choose to ride, so it isn't unconstitutional because we do have a choice. The state land does bring up an interesting point however.
What a silly lawsuit. Hard to imagine the leisure/activity chooses to play is the same thing as race, gender etc..... Should there be a constitutional mandate for any bar that has a dartboard to also be required by law to offer a pool table?
This is potentially one of the worst legal arguments I've heard. Just because land is publicly owned, does not mean it is required to let people do whatever they want. Find a single ski resort that allows free range snowmobiling, or tubing down runs. They don't exist. The equal protection clause protects people based on innate aspects of their being. If you can choose between skiing and snowboarding then it is not protected. Also... fine they can be on the land. But Alta owns the lifts and the lodges. Have fun walking up the hill.
It is against the law and I hope they win!!! I as a native Utahn, and have always been salty against Alta for running on public land, but deciding who and who can't use that public land. Mad River Glen and Deer valley (also Utah) is completely in their rights since they own 100% of their land they are excluding others from, I OWN ALTA!!! I'm a Utah tax payer, that land is MINE whether it's summer or winter, I want to be able to access it! This needs to end, and QUICK!!!
I would like to know how they are more dangerous in any manor. As someone who regularly has over 100+ days on the hill a year I see more skier taking more risk and also not looking up the trail for the people who technically have the right away and are traveling at a faster rate of speed.
The person downhill always has the right of way. How do you not know that? If you're going to pass, you announce it because people don't have eyes in the back of their head.
Looking up the hill? Lol. You look where you're going. If you hit a slower skier below you it's your own damn fault for not planning ahead and controlling your speed. It's like rear ending someone in a car? 9/10 times its your fault
The best powder on the Mountain? Uh you mean the SAME mountain Snowbird shares with Alta where snowboarders are allowed. Stupid Rich man's frivolous lawsuit.
That's pretty much what I was thinking. Not to mention there is TONS of world class snow to be had in the greater SLC area. It is an interesting point because unlike Deer Valley, Alta leases public land, but like the guy in the video said it doesn't really hold water with the equal protection clause.
Honestly, snowboarders can have Snowbird if we can keep Alta. I have no reason to ski Snowbird when I can just go to Alta. I've skied both and have a strong preference for Alta.
i ski, couldn't snowboard, tried it twice, just couldn't do it, and even i think this is bullshit. it shouldn't matter what you go down the slope on, as long as you're safe and are looking out for your fellow slope user, it's all good.
That's pretty weird. I'm pretty indifferent on the whole issue but snowbird is literally (and I mean LITERALLY) right next door. I just figured that snowboarders went their instead of Alta so it wasn't a big deal. Last time I was in Utah, I actually preferred snowbird over alta
Well it's public property. So I'd say the snowboarders has a snowballs chance.. But since snowboarders are not allowed to get on the lifts. Why not make new jobs and hire people to drive snowmobiles and take the snowboarders up to the top of the mountain? I guess Alta didn't watch Johnny Tsunami.
My friend who skies goes to alta every year. He tells my stories from his ski trips there. So I though I should go check it out . However he then told me snowboarding was not allowed there. ( I snowboard btw) So I was very sad.
It's about off piste snow conditions. If you have ever skied a traverse in a skiers only resort and a similar traverse in a regular resort you would know the difference it makes. Alta has only 5 lifts and 2,200 skiable acres making it necessary to traverse the mountain to get to all areas. The neighbor of Alta, Snowbird, has a similar size of 2,500 skiable acres but they have 10 lifts and a Tram making much more of the mountain accessible from the top of the lift.
The terrain any snowboarder is or isn't able to reach is highly irrelevant That's like saying beginners shouldn't ride on any mountain that has diamond runs, because you need to be able to ride diamonds in order to traverse the hole mountain
In my experience, snowboarding is safer and you are less likely to hurt yourself. Your feet are bound to the board, and legs stay at a regular stance so if you fall, you are much less likely to twist your leg/knee/ankle and break anything. Whereas with skis, your legs are free to move, so one bad fall and you could end up turning your ankle 180 degrees, if the skis fail to break off from your boots.
I don't know about others, but every single person who's rammed me this far has been a skier. I've been snowboarding for about six years and skied for four years before that. I'd say stuff about snowboarders being "out of control" is utter BS.
It's not discrimination because it's a SKI resort so anyone who wants to ski can go there. It's like not allowing street clothes in a swimming pool, if you want to swim you have to wear a swimsuit
Everyone is so ignorant I ski Alta, and boarders are allowed to go down the mountain bc alta doesn’t own that land, but they do own the lift and can deny then lift service. So let the boarders hike

I'm a snowboarder and I dislike this skiers only policy. .We choose to ride, so it isn't unconstitutional because we do have a choice. The state land does bring up an interesting point however.
YES I am glad us snowboarders are finally getting our voice heard!!
What a silly lawsuit. Hard to imagine the leisure/activity chooses to play is the same thing as race, gender etc..... Should there be a constitutional mandate for any bar that has a dartboard to also be required by law to offer a pool table?
The case is really about the lifts, not the land.
How did this case end up?
this is ajoke, right?
Denver isn't really close to Utah...
the case was in denver
he was at loveland which is right by denver lmfao
You did watch the video right? It's in Utah. Alta is in Utah. The Reporter was in Colorado.
What about a ski board?
How here is a snowboarder and doesn’t car this mountain doesn’t allow snowboarders
sick guys. ahah... We have 2 amazing snowboarders which probably are also 2 amazing lawyers !!! so great :)
This is a great commercial for Alta!
Lmao the lady at the end
She doesn't ski or snowboard so she doesn't have much knowledge which made her look bad, she probably should have done some research.
They don't have a valid argument. Snowboarders can go to Alta, they just have to rent some skis .
i like how the black lady is suggesting 'separate but equal' :)
I do both, am I half allowed
I liked that pun along with that edit along with it
The best powder on the Mountain?
The rivalry continues
You can tell he doesn’t ski because he called it snow skiing. Because you know just like there’s dirt skiing of rock skiing......😂😂😂😂
Asa Silver jetski
Water ski
Langlaufen etc
Roller skiing is a popular sport
Yeah. I've never seen people refer to skiing this way. When someone mention "ski", it defaults to the snow sport, not the water or land variants.
Public land? But private company. Hard decision.
What's snow skiing
It's skiing
Boards have Brighton. Next canyon over. 90% boarders over there.
I'm in this video! 2:52 On the lift
Nice...
wak ya...
Real nice
Do you hate snowboarders? Are you discriminating?
No I'm actually snowboarding this year
Philip N.L i love snowboarders and am a skiier myself.
Im a snowboard / skier and agree with that policy. Skiing is more traditional.
Freedom of expression.
The reporters don't know anything about either so why are they talking about it? Skiers are always the prudes though for no good reason.
Skiing is dumb
It's about off piste snow conditions. If you have ever skied a traverse in a skiers only resort and a similar traverse in a regular resort you would know the difference it makes. Alta has only 5 lifts and 2,200 skiable acres making it necessary to traverse the mountain to get to all areas. The neighbor of Alta, Snowbird, has a similar size of 2,500 skiable acres but they have 10 lifts and a Tram making much more of the mountain accessible from the top of the lift.
The terrain any snowboarder is or isn't able to reach is highly irrelevant
That's like saying beginners shouldn't ride on any mountain that has diamond runs, because you need to be able to ride diamonds in order to traverse the hole mountain
I ski
and I do crazier things than most snowboarders
Why does it looks like this only happens in america
Then dont go through the resort
We have solved this issue here in Denmark the easy way.
- we dont have mountains, and….. we dont have snow ( thank you global warming)
Who cares...let those snobs have their mountain. Plenty of other, better places.
Next to Jackson, Alta has some of the best skiing in the US. A lot of people would argue it's the best.
Andrew mount Bohemia Michigan has better powder than Alta
Yeah but the skiing overall is garbage in comparison.
Just gotta vote with our wallets.
You can still ride down the mountain, you just can't ride the lift
False. You can't even ride down the mountain without the ski patrol molesting you for snowboarding on Alta grounds.
who gives a shit i'd still continue to board and claim my rights.
have they ever thought of doing a snowboard only days???? it keep both partys seperate and happy!
that will never happen in my town of Breckenridge.
"Argument doesn't have a snowballs chance" hahahahahahaha I see what you did there.
99.9% of all the people that hate snowboarders have never been on a snowboard.
I used to be a skier now turned snowboarder, I was much more reckless when skiing
Hey Alta you can't lease public land and ban snowboarders.
separate lines.... you know like separate drinking fountains.....
Just take a split board up then but it together as a Snowboard at the top of the mountain
So many mormons on skis
Mormons rule!
Loveland? Alta
Everyone is so ignorant I ski Alta, and boarders are allowed to go down the mountain bc alta doesn’t own that land, but they do own the lift and can deny then lift service. So let the boarders hike
I tried skiing once... it was terrible.
