Good to see you again. I've seen this segment from Orbis before, but I didn't know you helped with it. What a small world. Your plug is pretty good. It'll be cool to see stuff like this come along more for us Crosstrek Crew. This wing is clever creation of storage potential and the new bracket makes it even more applicable. Awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing.
One look at your set up and I could guess you are a Marine, but it's also incognito. My lady and I have a white Crosstrek, and its great, I have a theme going that takes a little more shape with every mod. But inside, I think most of us want that all black stealth bomber Crosstrek jet fighter. And we get to see yours and say, yup that's every bit as sexy as I could imagine. Great rig, Tom, you've got good taste! And thanks for scratching that itch for the rest of us, by the way.
Swap those roto pak tanks. Put the one with the fuel above the fuel tank door and you can drain it straight into the fuel tank filler neck with a short hose and funnel.
I thought the same thing. When I was shopping a hitch mounted spare carrier, I was thinking about getting the less common left side swing because of where it would position the fuel cans, and having them right there next to the fill cap instead of opposite side, like you tend to see. Not sure if there's a method to that...
The crosstrek looks futuristic and i wish i bought one when i had the money. Awesome vehicle. id love a manual blacked out one with alot of tactical gear.
sounds like a cool build plan. go for it! I actually had one family in a Home Depot parking lot ask me if I was a storm chaser LOL. What you're describing might be mistaken for a bat mobile ;)
Hey Toms back!! That rack is very cool and very practical! Guess the only thing that would make me nervous is the weight of what ever you put on there pressing against the glass. Tom, you obviously have proven it's not an issue but for us nervous types, could that suction cup be relocated to the body panel or is there not enough room? Granted it wouldn't be flat but if it's large enough might get some suction on that panel. Great review, thank you for that!
Thanks! The gray one is mine, the gold one with the decal on the back belongs to the founder of Orbis Overlanding who created the Rack Wing I was talking about. I'm afraid I don't know where he got it but I'll ask and share back if I hear.
I haven't had any issues with the cans vibrating on the rack if that's what you're referring to. They're pretty secure. If they have liquid in them, that will dampen vibrations as well. Hope that helps!
Haven't tried, but while I think they could handle the weight, I'm not sure it would be practical...at least not for boards like MaxTrax. For example, if I tried to mount my MaxTrax on them parallel to the ground, they would interfere with the rear door operation. Perpendicular to the ground, they may end up sticking out too far and at an angle. I could be wrong.
I love it...but that suction cup (regardless of how heavy duty) is an obvious and eventual failure point. I guess it's fine if you're not doing any "actual" off-roading...which obviously in a Subaru he's not. I like that it's built in MT though, I'm originally from MT....and I sure as HE-double hockey sticks wouldn't trust that up to my cabin in MT. Then again a Subaru wouldn't make it too begin with so I guess the point is moot.
Impressive rock crawling @ 4:00 but do yourself a favor get yourself a third gen 4 runner or first gen Tacoma. You are playing with fire with that Subaru. I grew up in IL and thought I could wheel with a passenger car. I've been out west since 97 and a proper 4x4 will open up the world to you and not have to worry about body damage and flats. Buy once, cry once.
I hear ya. Use to have a jeep when I was stationed in California. Just picked up a new to me GX 470 as my off-road overlanding project car. That’ll be making its debut on the channel soon :-). The subie is a fun experiment in pushing some limits just to see what it can do. Gotta say, I’m impressed but it definitely has its limits.
This is awesome!!! I've added it to my UA-cam page's "Cool Gear" playlist. Can't wait to see my set on my Ascent!
Heard Orvis and the owner for the first time on the subie and you podcast. Awesome guy and his products look great!
Nice-you sparked my imagination, Tom! Thanks

My wife owns a Crosstrek. The next evolutionary step would be some armor plating. Great video!
Patrick is a great guy and makes fine products. The price tag gave me shell shock

Looks great. I may need to pick up some once they're in stock. Great video man.
tom's car: *takes a long drag of a cigarette* "aerodynamics, havn't heard that name in years"

Great Video 👍
Thanks for all the great content! What’s the impact on road noise while driving?
Thank you officer McNulty
Yes on the Molly
Roger that. Added to my list :)
What’s the large decal you’re using on the rear quarter of the car? Looks awesome

Hey how much do the cans vibrate? I have the generic universal bracket by spider no drill and the cans vibrate a ton even tightened down all the way

How has the ikamper affected your mpg?
can you put recovery boards on them?

It would be a lit cooler if the suction cup is on the panel not on glass

My jeep gets12 mpg. No reason for my subaru too!
Good rack.
