the reason you were not taking damage is not because you had a high unoff deffence its because gem armor retains the same damage reduction as red matter armor that means if are wearing red matter and gem armor is still gives you the seet bonas of 90% damage reduction for all types of damage including pure damage which is what the Tesla uses to damage a enemy

Cody, I have a trick for you to get infinite uncraftable drops, you need to obtain a custom npc wand, and then set it as a passive mode with a boss bar but have it have 1 hp with instant resales. Then you can punch it over and over to obtain INFINITE uncraftable blocks. You are welcome for this most genius idea.
