Flying-fox rescue after a hailstorm: Haille, Rave and Sheree

  • There was a terrific hailstorm last night, with hailstones the size of golf balls, some as large as tennis balls in some areas.
I was called for a rescue of a bat hanging low on a tree trunk near the colony in a large city park. When on my way, the ranger called back and said there was another batty crawling along the ground, and to bring 2 cages (but I was already on my way).
A third bat call for the park came in a few minutes later, and reports of some dead bats in the ground.
First rescue was Haille, a 10 week old baby who was alert and interactive with no apparent injuries except a grazed thumb. It is always deceptive; assessing them at rescue and looking at them in 12 hours usually shows a huge difference in their physical state, as the adrenaline from accident and rescue wears off.
I couldn't find the second bat, mainly because the ranger and I were not communicating very well. I came back to this one.
The third bat, Rave, was an adult male hanging off a picnic table. He had a fractured radius right at his wrist joint, which isn't something we can fix so the bat can fly again, so he was euthanased.
Batty two, Sheree, was located - she appeared to have a massive closed head injury. She wasn't great so I got her to the Princess who is the best carer for head injuries in my area. In care she improved and started moving around the cage, then became progressively less well till she was fitting on a regular basis. She was euthanased.
There were 3 dead bats I picked up.
One was an adult female who had no visible cause of death but was probably a head injury.
One was a juvenile male Black Flying-Fox who had a shattered jaw and horribly broken humerus at his shoulder joint.
And one was an adult, sex unknown, who was mostly eaten by a fox, but who had a large depressed skull fracture.
    Haille:
I was going to leave you with the happy feeling that at least one batty survived, but Haille's story deserves a truthful end.
Haille was the most delightful big baby in care for the first 12 hours, with large bright eyes. She was hungry and thirsty, drank juice, milk and ate yoghurt. Then the adrenaline wore off and she was quiet and wouldn't drink. She was given good analgesia and put back to bed to sleep and rest.
She began to smell bad, and about 24 hours after rescue, she was unrouseable, had slitty squidgy eyes, was in pain I couldn't alleviate, had massively swollen toes and foot (which looked like electric burns), and both wrists swelled hugely and both thumbs looked blistery and burnt.
I think somewhere in her hailstorm accident she glanced off power lines and ended up on the ground.
I euthanased her, and it was a blessing to end her suffering.
So of the 6 post-hailstorm bats I picked up last week, 3 were DOA and all 3 live ones were euthanased (Rave immediately, Haille 24 hours later, and Sheree 72 hours later).
    RIP Rave, Haille and Sheree.

She didn't run to me really - she'd hit her head and was headed somewhere where she could climb into a tree to get away from the people.

I don't really have a problem with the DOA bat rescues. The bat is dead, there is nothing I can do about it to affect the bat or prevent it from happening; all I can do is pick up the pieces and try to save anything still alive.

yelloworangered I know what you mean. Back in 2010 the Raleigh area got 59 tornados in one afternoon. 2 came too close to our home. Hail the size of softballs. Huge dents in our cars and one with a broken windshield. I can only imagine these sweethearts out in that severe storm and getting hit by hail. It’s very painful, even the smaller hail and can cause serious injuries. 😢

Paolo G incredible. Those 59 tornados that hit us in 2010 was as far from normal as it gets. Our T storms get severe, and they’re doozies, but don’t produce much hail. I feel badly for all the outdoor critters during bad storms.

      @lc4life369 4 роки тому +2

@yelloworangered we don't get alot of hailstorms where I live in vermont but when we do they are very small. We don't get tornados either except once about 5 years ago.the one time we had tornados we got a hail storm with it too and the hail was the size of baseballs and when we looked outside we couldn't see anything. It was the scariest experience of my life. I went to visit family a few years before that in pensilvania where there were several tornado warnings and hail storms. That was pretty scary too but nothing compared to the one in Vermont where tornados are unheard of. We also had alot of damage to cars and the roofs of houses. Alot of people got new roofs from insurance. And of course cars too.

They can be captured temporarily to be nursed back to health, but their bones are fragile. And a flying fox who cannot fly anymore can't get back, he would be prey.
Euthanizing them is for sure heartbreaking, especially because they are endangered.

@@Tantejay you call it the right thing to do I call it killing a living creature because you can't be bothered with it if your going to provide healing care for an animal you should consider what you would do for a human patient before making life or death decisions like that it would be different if you found it on the side of the road and decided to put it out of its misery but once you've taken it in and cared for it you should not ever attempt euthanasia unless it truly is terminally ill, it may want the wild but more than that it also wants to live

This shows how very fragile they are. Not only to initial injury, but during treatment - no matter how hard you try.💐

They're not fragile during treatment. They're fragile - despite treatment sometimes.

9:15 the way the bat looks up at you worriedly, it made me laugh and made my heart melt a little, what an adorable little bugger, looking at you with beady eyes. I love these bats, theyre so handsome and fuzzy and filled with personality

People used to freak out, if hail was golf ball size, as most hail was pea size. Now the hail is baseball size. Not much can withstand that, esp. poor fragile animals that can't find shelter.(And people too.) So sorry😢 for the loss of so many of our sweet battie friends,Meg. R.I.P. sweet darlings.😔

I know the babies love me, because they're babies and they will love anyone who gives them what they need emotionally and physically (feed, toilet, groom, keep warm, and love). But the new rescues really don't want any ugly human giant near them.
Have a look at the orphan bat playlists on my channel and see the difference.

Your work can be very sad, very joyous and all parts in between. But always rewarding as you are one of few that can make a difference in this way. . I find I can’t stop watching your channel sometimes. It’s very interesting and by no means ordinary.
Thank you for your dedication from USA

At least the ones that are barely hanging in there get some relief even its first three to five minutes. You're very sweet. And I think they recognize that immediately. I've heard a couple of the juveniles that were screaming to high heaven until they realize you weren't going to hurt them or rather they weren't hurt. Keep doing what you do. God bless.
