I learned about the value of keeping tools clean from my Dad. My Dad is a retired stone mason. Just about every mason's tools are covered in dried cement. Not my Dad. He gave his trowels and wheelbarrows a vigorous scrubbing to remove any traces of cement. He's had wheelbarrows that were 30 years old that lived outside 365 days a year.
When I started at the dealership I did a lot of PDIs. Suspension bolts were to be checked. The cars were undercoated and sockets and wrenches would get covered in this sticky black goo. At the end of the day I put my sockets and wrenches in the parts washing tank and cleaned them before putting them away. It's the same with grease and grime. I always started the day with clean tools. It was important to keep tools clean when doing interior work. Nothing upsets a customer more than finding grease spots on their interiors.

I always hated sockets filled with dirty grease and grime. 😃👍

One thing that irritates me, is nasty tools going back in a box.

How might one to keep these clean, rust-free, etc? Vaseline and lanolin mixed is said to be good rust-preventer.

@dennisyoung4631 I put a light coat of Trewax on then after the initial clean-up. After that they get wiped down after each use of each tool. Treeax is what I put on jointer and table saw decks
