Where should you install your AIO liquid cooler? The best places tested!

  • Here I'm talking about where you should put your all-in-one CPU cooler's radiator. What's the best placement for it and why does it matter? There are some mistakes you can make when installing your cooler and these errors should be avoided if you want to maximise performance while also minimising risk. So in this video I'm talking about where you should put your radiator but also where not to put it.
I'm also running tests using the NZXT Kraken Elite 280mm all-in-one CPU cooler and the NZXT H7 Flow RGB case. In this video I've set it up in three different ways:
1 - Front mounted with push pull fans (four fans total)
2 - Front mounted with just the NZXT Core fans pulling air
3 - Top mounted with the fans set to exhaust
I wanted to see what the difference was between these settings by running tests. So I used Cinebench R23, Heaven Benchmark and 3D Mark stress tests and benchmarks to put the system under pressure, then I got the temps using HWMonitor.
Now obviously this needs to be taken with a pinch of salt because every system is different, your environment is different and your case and fans will be different too. But I've tested a lot of different all-in-one CPU coolers and have found that top mounting or side mounting is generally best. That said it will depend on the case and the airflow, so it's best to test and see what works for you.

I'm about to try out some 90 degree USB 3 and USB 3.2 headers so the front panel cables go parallels to the motherboard but I'm wondering if there's any downsides (signal issues, reduced power, etc.). Likewise, I'm curious if there any any 90 degree or C shaped connectors for 600w GPU cables since bending them or hitting the glass can be hard on the plug.

Finally a video that discusses fan direction relating to mounting location. I have glass on two sides of the case. The location that's makes the most sense for my build is side mounting near the front of the case. But I wanted to be sure I was ok flipping the fans around since they need to be intake in that location. Really appreciate your look at fan orientation relative to the radiator. Everyone seems to be exhausting hot PC air through the radiator. It just didn't sit well with me.

The most BASIC rule of thumb, like the 1+1 = 2 logic used in math equivalence in AIO mount is that "AIR BUBBLEs OR AIR IN GENERAL WHEN IN A SEALED SYSTEM LIKES TO BE AT TOP" to test this get a bottle of water with some air in it, now notice how NO MATTER WHICH orientation you flipped, turned, twisted it as long as the cap is closed on the bottle the air in at the TOP. When you have it standing the airs staying by the cap of the bottle when you have it laying flat the air spread out through out the bottle but still AT THE TOP. Now use that logic we just tested to when you mount your AIO main goal here is to get the air as above and far away from the CPU as possible. So we are try to orient the radiator at the top or at least in a way the water is as far as possible from the cpu. Think of the whole system close your eyes and imagine it as a water bottle with some air. The bottle cap as your pump and the body of the water bottle as your radiator and pipes. Now think up a orientation to get the air as far, up and away from the cap of your imaginary bottle. Literally if you ever played with a bottle of water as a kid and watched the air bubbles inside swish around as you moved, shaked and jerked it around this explanation should click.

Personally, I'm mounting my new build with the rad on top so I'll be ok.
But I also think criticism of front mount/hoses down is overblown. Wouldn't an easy precautionary step be to flip the case on its side once a month or so and let the pump run for a while? This would tend to force bubbles out of the pump head/water block and into the rad. Then when the case is rotated to its normal position, the bubbles would move to the top of the rad.

It would be interesting to see GPU benchmark being done for each of these setups. It makes sense that with the 1st and 2nd setup where CPU radiator got fresh air (as intake) the CPU temp was lower. The question is how would it affect the GPU when it's under heavy load. Ultimately it would be nice to see a CPU+GPU based benchmark which would be close to real life scenario (e.g. gaming).

GPU is going to be a few degrees more hot when you have the radiator pulling air from outside the case but only in extreme scenarios like running a cpu stress test and gpu stress test. In normal gaming use the cpu is never going to reach high enough temps to affect the gpu.
On the other hand when you have the radiator as exhaust (e.g. top mount) the cpu temps are going to always be higher, even during gaming because the gpu usually is getting hot.
It all comes down to aesthetics. I prefer top mounted radiators just because my pc looks better this way. Hope this helps.

I have my AIO radiator mounted hose side up in front because the hoses can't clear the SATA cage flipped the other way. I tried today to top mount it after pulling the two exhaust fans, but it's too big, I'd have to drill more holes, and the hoses would never clear my 342mm long RTX4080 OC. So I returned the radiator to the front, flipped the three 140mm fans on it around so they're exhaust, and put the top fans back in and flipped them so they're intake.
Before I did this, I was idling somewhere around 44C-50C after having been a little lower previously, with opening a bunch of tabs, starting a game, or simply booting running the Tctl/Tdie up to 84.2C when I've got thermal throttling in BIOS set to 85C. Now I am idling around 35C-38C, averaging between 42C-53C, and my max so far has been 75.1C. I guess I still have the goods. This is with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D where the comfortable limit is something like 88C and absolute max is 95C.

The only place I could fit my 360 AIO was in the front of the case. I set the fans to intake air. 3 exhaust fans. Temps were 78 degrees peak on the GPU mem, core was a little toasty peaking at 76 degrees (3080)
Not ideal to have heated air coming in the front off the cpu radiator, but a RYZEN 9 5900X doesn't produce all that much heat (peaked at 64 deg). I think the build will be fine.

Also, I am having less dust in the case that was happening due to the negative pressure caused by the rear fan.

Oddly, Corsair themselves on their own "How to Mount a Radiator" say to either do top mount OR Radiator front with Tubes at the bottom and only as a last resort have tubes at the top.
I dont know when they changed their literature, but i remember it being different recommendations.
Its always been that front Rad is warmer GPU temps, slighfly cooler CPU & Top Rad is cooler GPU, slighfly warmer CPU, in general.

Arctic Freezer II 280, push pull front mount, tubes down.

    I am building a 14700K/4080s system with a beQuiet Shadow 800fx case.
I am going to be using the Arctic Freezer 420 RGB.
My idea was to move the front 3 factory installed 140mm fans in the case which are set as intake, and relocate them to the top as exhaust (the case natively supports 3x140mm fans at the top, just not included), and then put the radiator of the AIO in place of them as the front intake. There is also a spot for a 140mm fan on the bottom, so I will buy an extra light wings fan to put there as intake.
So it will be bottom intake, front intake with 420 radiator, and rear and top exhaust.
This is where I am stuck. Should I even be removing the front fans included with the case? The radiator does fit behind them just fine - the fans are pre installed as 3 intake fans at the front as said, I could add the radiator behind them as an intake also.. Would this work? Or is it better to move them as I suggested above? If I leabe them there I'll need to buy 3 extra fans for the top anyway for exhaust.
all the tests I have seen favour front mount radiator intake to top mount exhaust when it comes to cpu temps and when using an open air GPU, just don't know whether to leave the front case fans where they are or have the radiator fans as the sole air intake mechanism..
    TIA!

Great insight! If I may could I ask for some advice as I'm thinking of building a pc with an AiO in a mATX case and I want it to be as quiet as possible. Therefore I was thinking that a front mount would be better to avoid having any fans on the top as those disproportionally increase noise (don't they?) but this might be a little toasty and in turn increase the fan speed to keep the temps (in general I care more about noise than temps though). Or should I just do a top mount with standard front intake instead (so more fans in total)? Which config do you reckon has a lower noise level while browsing/gaming?

    • @anonviranon

If you want low noise pc, all you need to do pickup low tdp parts, and buy high performance fan, set pwm to below 1.6k, 1k rpm will be the best but your CPU will be slightly hotter, you can't get low noise with high tdp parts and oc, your pc will keep pushing temp
