Cindy Hutton is a Nelson artist who has inherited her love of art from her grandmother, who was also a professional artist. She paints in oils, from photographs of anything from landscapes to portraits.
“I was originally inspired to paint in watercolours after seeing the works of early watercolour artists. However, after attending a worskshop where I was tutored by a renowned New Zealand artist, I developed a love for oil painting. I have always been drawn to romanticism and I enjoy the challenge of taking a blank canvas and creating a scene that evokes happiness, drawn from New Zealand’s magic scenery combined with the carefree poses of children.”
Cindy Hutton works from her studio in Nelson which overlooks an acre of park-like gardens. She and her husband have a family of four. She has used their early childhood photos as the subject of many of her works.
Cindy Hutton has her art displayed in galleries throughout New Zealand and in her own gallery at 77 Champion Road, Richmond, Nelson.

The Colour In Your Life fine art TV series is an art show that takes you into the everyday studios of artists from around the world. I'm watching your videos over again on another Channel. The more I watch your videos the more I learn and I just think these artists are so awesome . I just need more time so I can paint. Juggling a job, life in its self and finding time to sit down and paint is what I find so hard to do sometimes. I feel like life is just going so fast .........I want to sit and paint. I do paint. Just not as much as I want to.

This is beautiful. I would love for her to help me learn to paint like this.
I also draw using a grid. Tip: The lines erase much better if you put at lease one coat of gesso on your canvas.
Do you find the fumes from using turps as a diluent a problem?
I'm really hooked on your show but I wish the titles could indicate whether its oils or watercolour. I paint in watercolour only and with many of the videos I'm not sure which it is until I've actually started watching.
We do have playlists by medium. If you go to playlists you can choose the medium you wish.
