Friendly reminder to anyone who doesn’t know, eggs and soldiers are a breakfast food (the soldiers are pieces of toast cut into strips a la French toast sticks to dip into the egg)
It sounds like a really uncanny version of that to me. Idk why, but this song, mostly the beginning, sounds really "wrong" to me, but in a way that makes it good, if you know what I mean??? Idk, I love it, and agree with this metaphor, but if it were a bit darker.
Me and my friend both listen to Cosmo Sheldrake, and we both live in Canada, but my mother was born in Yorkshire and was raised by 100% British parents, so I sometimes I will use an English term or slang, and have no idea that the other Canadians in my life have no idea what I’m talking about. So we were talking about this song right? Cause it’s one of my favourites, but I made a little joke like- “Every day I eat an egg and soldier? Like what? You’re just going to eat one and stop there?” And I swear, she gave me the MOST CONCERNED, SCARED, CONFUSED LOOK IVE EVER SEEN ON HER. And that’s how I learned that not all Canadians know what egg and soldiers is, and they might think that you’re either a cannibal or have extremely strange taste in food.
Wriggle: "Tom Thumb, from where do you come?" Egg and Soldiers: "All hail Tom Thumb," Why is the fairy tale-spawned thumb-sized child conjured by Karma incarnate the apparent god of the Cosmoverse? I dunno.
Not a big egg fan but the last week I was craving egg so I bought 6, so far I've eaten 4, I scrambled 3 with and added 1 to a horrific mug cake, this song has decided what I'll do with the other two, it's been maybe 5 years or longer since I ate an egg and soliders. This song is eggcellent 🍳🐣🍳 and your voice always reminds me of getting lost in a good way around Devon and is a nice English vibe not not nice Also those fishes remind me of bednobs and broomsticks
melody reminds me of my childhood; and the lyrics are just soo good. A cool thing about not being a native english speaker is that you take longer to understand lyrics truly say, so you have to use your imagination a bit. but the more i hear these lyrics the less i understand them. and like the other musics you do, i think i like them, not because i dont understand them, i would like it get it what it says, but i like them because they make sense even if i dont understand. in a maner of saying. anyway, keep on that good work
Curious... listening to this for the third time and I can't help but feel like this is about climate change and the businesses' and our attitude towards it, opting for growth in the economy and more products at the expense of nature, whose resources we all rely on ("Swap cow for bean"). Consequences of this excessive consumption lead to the decline of these resources, which can't grow and replace fast enough to keep up with our consumption, yet we still don't balance this with the growth of these resources, thus "only thinking in the short term". You get a sense of these consequences already in the song: "For we drank the ocean" "Plant poems in the barren ground"
Anyway, that's just my theory, and my brain wanted to galaxy brain this time instead of during research. Love your songs, Cosmo. You inspire so much creativity, imagination and wonder, while taking us to some fairy world.
Ik this is two years old but i love this interpretation, adding onto it!! At the very end of the song: "All hail tom thumb, what's done is done" Could refer to how we must submit to how those before us treated the earth, metaphorically. tom thumb was a very old folk tale about a boy greedily shoving his fingers in a pie eating only the plum, destroying the rest of the pie for anyone else to eat but himself. "Youll never find the answer til its over" The solution for earths preservation wouldn't reveal itself until there is nothing left of the earth, when we have all the hindsight to know what to do differently. But at this point it'll be too late. It is over.
Just amazing, the way that the story perfectly unfolds with your music to create this amazing atmosphere. I understand, I think, what this song is about and the music helps to emphasize it. Ever since I found your channel I have been incredibly inspired! I was suffering from Art/Writing/Animation block and your music really helped, thanks so much! I was wondering if I may use some of your music in some small animations I am working on, because of how well they fit with my story and how fun they would be to animate to (also how amazing they are). Thanks so much for the wonderful music.
Every one of these song is so beautifully poetic and strange. I can imagine like, 30's cartoons when I hear his voice. It's like all of these songs are each explaining another corner of this bizarre and fascinating fantasy world of Cosmo's creation.
Yeah, pretty sure it's about climate change. "Climbed the hill but then fell down" "what's done is done" gotta love another song to remind me that the earth will never be the same, as we keep going on like this (:
Listening to this makes me think of an insane evil king living in an underground kingdom and time is his lover. Twords the end he shows that Tom thumb is his prisoner and he makes fun of him by saying "all hail Tom thumb"

The Bird-Eating Goliath Tarantula enters the birds’ kingdom. Nobody can recognise him, until he picks up a royal guard and just simply bites into his shoulder, and only then do those amber eyes alert the public. He cannot be harmed by their weapons, for the bugs’ kingdom would take it as a threat of war.

lol i tought it were literal soldiers eating eggs
Yep I knew that but thanks for resaying it to anyone who didn't...
Oh
Brought to you by a balanced breakfast.
Fool, this IS a balanced breakfast!
Grim The Ghastly, your profile pic oddly fits this song! lol
I absolutely love that the clapping sounds transition almost to water sounds
Omg yeah it sounds like frying bacon
This song sounds like what a warm bath on a cold day feels like
TOTALLY
holy shit u put it into words
I was thinking it was like drinking fresh water and sitting in a cold room after a hot day

Poppet Pebbles WAIT ITS A REAL THING AND HES NOT TALKING ABOUT CANNIBALISM??? HUH???
Poppet Pebbles I litteraly had to google it lol
i'm american and this song confused me a lot until i looked it up lol
I'm American and I got it, but thats because I watched a 20 minute long video about eggs...
I thought it was meant to be he eats an egg and soldiers on.. like the verb
This is as if not more addictive than "The Moss".

I’ve noticed that the further I go into his album, the more his songs seem to plunge deeper and deeper into madness(or at least the chaos of the beat)

native english speaker: understanding lyrics less is a common trait to all cosmo sheldrake songs tbh
I think some people should sit and listen to his music with pencil and paper in front of you, get inspired and see where it takes you.

ahh your songs are honestly amazing, this album is beautiful.
This hit different in 2020
I don't know what it is, but something about this song has a certain sadness about it.
I can't get enough of this creative, weird, wonderful music!
I could listen to Pelicans We, Egg and Soldiers, Come Along, Hocking, and The Moss looped for hours on end.

@CheeseCaker :)
OOOOooo are you still working on it?? can you tell me about it????
The beginning of this song sounds like it belongs in a Banjo Kazooie game. 0:00 - 0:36
Now that I think about it I can see why you’d think that.
Yes!
If Tom Bombadil from Lord of the Rings existed in real life
took me longer than it should have to realize that this song is about climate change
But brekfast
Yea honestly same. it's a sleeper hit.
