Surely if we overload the front end like this we will get absolutely picked apart at the back, no? The CB role is where we have the most glaring question marks, so the idea of just 3 at the back seems like suicide. We assume Davies and Buchanan will be pushing forward more often than setting up defensively, and Johnston is almost certainly going to make regularly runs forward leaving massive holes at the back. I could be wrong, but my sense is this would be a tactical disaster unless we can manage to score 3 or 4 every game. Am I wrong?
Canadian soccer has grown a ridiculous amount in the last 5 years. If it continues like this they could be rivalling the US in 10 years. Very impressive and i hope they play in copa regularly going forward

I believe the report on Laryea is that he's recovering very nicely. Herdman recently seemed to think he'd be back into game ready condition in 4 weeks, which would technically have him available in time for Copa kickoff. If it was any other player you'd easily just plan to count him out for the tournament cause he hasn't been playing but since Copa America is such a physically intense tournament, would it be worth still bringing Laryea if he was technically fit? He's obviously an incredibly valuable player from the standpoint of physical play.

@@samuelrigaud6595 Yeah, identical goal! Except, Davies with his weak foot. HUGELY significant goals for each of them - both brilliant individual efforts. So good. Canadian strikers/attackers across the board really are on fire these days.

As much as this pains me to say as a Caps fan, Adekugbe is hurt and his play this season has been less than stellar.
What's his outlook between now and Copa kickoff, though? Isn't he healthy now and likely to be getting minutes?
@@greglawrence9230 He left the Caps game Saturday with a calf injury. To my understanding there's no timetable for his return, but I imagine he'll be OK for Copa America. He won't likely be 90 minute match fit though.
@@jodydubick854 Ugh. I just now starting watching the match replay of the Caps/Cavalry game. Guess that explains why he wasn't there. Man, if we don't have either Adekugbe or Laryea at the Copa it will be truly devastating.

At this point, someone else would need to be named really, really soon - it's sure looking increasingly unlikely. On the flip side, the more time that passes without CSA officially saying Biello will take the team to the tourney perhaps implies they are at least trying/aiming to appoint someone in time for the tourney, if possible. So who knows....

@@stevekaradimas7925 My concern with both Bombito and Cornelius is that neither has yet had a strong showing for Canada. For me, club form only goes so far - the results need to be observed at the national level. Waterman's outing against T&T was decent but he really wasn't tested sufficiently to know. Josh is talking about only bringing 6 CB. It's obvious that the Netherlands and France friendlies need to be used to see who jives the best, but I just don't know that we can afford to bring all 3 (Waterman, Cornelius and Bombito) to this camp if we only have 6 total. To me, it's unthinkable to bring all of them plus De Fougerolles and leave out a seasoned/experienced/proven CB like Vitoria. Fine, we don't want to have to start or even play Vitoria at all this tourney, but holy hell, we have nobody else who is proven at this level of the game, and if we're without Adekugbe and Laryea....I mean, we could get opened up really, really badly, especially if Johnston is running forward with abandon as he's been doing.
To me, Vitoria has to be in the camp as a failsafe, and you leave De Fougerolles at home, at least - he's exciting for the future, but he's as green as they come. This is the Copa America, friends. If we could only bring 2 of Bombito, Cornelius and Waterman, who would y'll say we should bring? I'd lean towards Cornelius and Waterman.
@@greglawrence9230 I agree with a lot of what you're saying. And believe I share the sentiment that its a tragedy that with so many skilled footballers these are the people we're talking about to head up our backline. Part of me wants to just put Laryea in center back and see what happens. Waterman is skilled enough but we need to be a fast team, we're never going to be more skilled than Argentina, but we can be faster, hence Bombito. Vitoria might still be the best center back but he is definitely on his way out and fugerolles is pretty exciting. Just very very scared of waterman defending against Alvarez and Messi.
@@stevekaradimas7925 Good thoughts. I am extremely nervous about the back line. It's really to the point that you're asking yourself how can we not play Davies at full back? What good is he up the pitch if we're bleeding goals at the back? If Adekugbe is available then I'd keep Davies at left wing, but if no Adekugbe then Davies has to go full back and you start Ahmed left wing.
Speedy CBs is always welcome, but I really do wonder how much of a difference it'll make against the calibre of teams we'll be facing this summer. There's technical skill, speed and smarts. For me, I'd usually take smart play and awareness over speed, especially if you're facing opponents that have both. Tactics can accommodate slower players but not a lack of awareness.
I think the fact that Vitoria is on his way out and we have no clear successor is all the more reason to have him in this camp with the young guys, even if the young guys are starting and playing most or all of the matches.
