      Wow an insightful American! I think you're right. IF Marsch gets some reasonable financial support for training camps (remains to be seen), I think Canada is going to cause the USA a lot of problems. I would still put the USA ahead of Canada, but the gap will not be very big come 2025. Berhalter is more of a liability than a benefit to the USMNT.

Marsch is more likely to have insights into how to cause problems.

      @@greglawrence9230 Let's hope he's got the financial resources to move the team onto an improvement track. I think its the chicken or the egg situation: the team needs more revenue but that won't happen unless they make some headlines, and that might not happen until they they start doing things correctly. I really hope Kevin Blue sees it this way (I think he does).
      As for insights into the US competitor, although I think Canada's ceiling is high enough to beat the US, reaching those heights may not come as quick as we would like. Having said that, beating the US is not out of realm of possibility in 2025...

      @@djknox2 All indications are the he has secured the finances to serve his vision. It sure seems that the 3 Canadian MLS teams are expecting an ROI from the WC run and are willing to invest to get it. Really, everything looks as good as we could hope. Funny to see the pundits questioning what it means to have 'MLS' attached to the official title - it means Blue did his job and secured the investment needed, that's what. I don't think their heart has been fully in it for a while now... or at least there hasn't been full unity in the locker room. From Marsch's comments on the CBS Sports Golazo podcast, I think Miller will get the nod over Cornelius. Marsch mentioned a bunch of names for central CBs and he didn't even mention Cornelius. Could've been a slip but he said Miller was "a guy I think we can count on". On left wing, I get that Millar is a workhorse that brings 110%, but he doesn't have the same technical skill to cause problems on the ball that Ahmed would bring, and Ahmed will fit the pressing requirements just fine. If we're pushing Davies back (which I agree with), then for me it's gotta be Ahmed up front. Finally, I'd prefer to see Eustaquio and Piette beside each other - especially against Argentina. I liked how Piette looked up against Messi in the Monreal/Miami matchup. Though maybe Johnston slots in beside Eustaquio if Laryea is ready and able to take right back. Kone up in a 10 is exciting. I could really see him breaking out in a big way this tourney - a goal from outside the box, maybe. We'll certainly need to threaten from outside the box against capable defensive blocks. Can't wait for the friendlies!! May the best men get the spot. Everyone's gotta bring it.

    • @djknox2
      @djknox2 20 днів тому +1

      Excellent comments. Yes these guys are terrible at breaking down a low block. What they need to focus on is taking longer range strikes, and on improving their set pieces. Everyone is high on Kone but he's yet to show me that he deserves a starting role, especially as a playmaker CAM. I still prefer Hoilett or Oso in that role. Frankly I think the lineup will be dictated by which midfielders step into the spotlight by raising their game. We need better playmaking alongside Eustaquio. Could it be Kone, Choiniere or Ahmed? Yes, but we need to see it. In the meantime, I know Oso and Junior can provide good service AND envision ways to attack.
      I also like the idea of Laryea at RB and using Johnston as a CDM, allowing Eutaquio to be an 8 rather than a 6, where he is wasted.

    I doubt that Marsch will have Davies that far back. I heard him talking about Davies & saying that he can move him around; but that he doesn't just want him playing out wide as a winger; but rather have him cutting into the middle more etc... and taking advantage of his tremendous speed.
    If Marsch wants to play a very speedy press game, to keep the opposition on their heels, it makes more sense to try Davies further up the pitch to start & adjust as needed.
    I also heard Marsch complimenting Kamal Miller's game, so I would be surprised if he didn't start, at least in the initial match versus the Netherlands. He will want to have a little more experience in the initial starting line-up too.

    I still think I prefer a 3-5-2 over 4-2-3-1. I think Davies as an attacking wing back suits him much better than just being a straight LB. Also, having 2 ar the top allows Larin to slot in next to David. He hasn't been particularly good with Mallorca this year, but when he lines up for Canada he always delivers. Larin deserves to be in the starting XI.

    • @greglawrence9230

      Larin seems very doubtful in Marsch's style of play. My feeling is that the 3-5-2 will leave Canada far too exposed against top tier talent, and from Marsch's comments, he seems to think that as well. I'd say a 3-5-2 is incredibly unlikely with Marsch.

    Jesse tends to like to play compact and when defending, he likes to push everything wide. It's hard to move it up the middle on a Jesse team but it's weakness is the long switch passes. I don't know if he's fixed that yet, but at Leeds big switches caused them all sorts of problems. The good thing about it is it just creates turnovers all over the place lol.

      Tbh that’s way better for canadas player profile. We have more pace on the wings/full backs than any other team at the copa America and could easily press off of a switch. We often get beat through the middle specially when we aren’t playing a back 3.

    Hope and don’t think this will be the lineup, I’m not sure even why we’re talking about Piette who is an average MLS player at best talking about going up against major world talents… Osario can play any position better.
    2nd-We have seen at Bayern Munich that Davies is a defensive liability at wingback is a true wing. There are other options in Laryea or Adekugbe at wingback.
    3rd-let’s not get carried away with club performance as statistically we know that David is not the reliable goalscorer at the nine position on the national team and is better at a false nine with Larin at the top in the proper nine…they are better to play together.
    4th-let’s cap Kolyosho and Farsi as they would be better options at the positions they play… this is why we have Kevin Blue and Jessie Marsch for the purposes of high-level recruiting… on that note, let’s cap Jebbison as well.

      Hey all great comments. Along with @greglawrence9230 we should be hired as Assistant Managers 🤣. Piette is indeed average. However, on a 26 man squad, I'd be tempted to keep him as a substitution 6 to help lock down a lead that is slipping. I also agree that David is not a reliable striker for Canada. In Qatar he went absolutely silent. So I prefer the pairing with Laryn but it does leave us defensively vulnerable when the 3-5-2 is deployed against stronger teams, especially when the wingbacks are prone to be getting caught upfield, as happens with Johnston and Davies. Maybe a 4-4-2 is better against tougher competition? I do like the 4-5-1 IF David gets the needed service, which is why in that configuration we must have a competent CAM, and I'm not sure Kone is that player? I do want to see either Junior or Oso on the pitch acting as a playmaker. If and when Kone can play a 10, then great. He's not there yet however.

    • @greglawrence9230
      @greglawrence9230 19 днів тому +1

      Yes, great insights. I do think Piette is instrumental to Marsch's system, though. And while Miami is not Argentina by a long shot, Piette looked solid facing Messi there. Piette is super reliable in his role - very aware and mature for his age. It's not a sexy position he plays, but....
      David has been missing proper service. I am utterly convinced that he and Hoilett need as much time together on the pitch as possible, and early in matches, not late. Hoilett is brilliant with awareness of delivery, and we desperately need that to get more out of David.
      I really hope we see Adekugbe. He and Davies are the pairing on the left that has looked the best to me in the past. But Davies and Ahmed intrigues me for sure.
      I think Larin's days are numbered, unfortunately. Will be sad to see, and maybe it works out somehow but I don't see him giving Marsch what he needs - it's just not his style or strength.

    Could someone explain to me the difference between a 4-3-2-1 and a 4-3-3? In a 4-3-3 the center forward is the lone striker. In soccer there are 3 strategic positional roles: defense, midfield and forwards. So why do pundits keep trying to make it 4? Josh I would like to see Ahmed instead of Choiniere and Laryea instead of Johnston. I'm also not so sure about Crepeau. Far too short to be a world class keeper, and THAT is what Canada will need to make any waves in 2026. Europeans and African nations are full of very tall and strong players and Canada is going to get eaten alive on corners with a short keeper like Crepeau. I also suspect that Marsch will play Davies as a winger who interchanges with David and is thus on the ball more often.

    • @greglawrence9230
      @greglawrence9230 20 днів тому +1

      You meant a 4-2-3-1, right? For me, it's about communicating what's expected from the players. The key difference between a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 are those 2 sitting above the defensive line. Yes, there's only defense, midfield and forward, but there are midfielders that play defensively and midfielders that play offensively. A formation like 4-2-3-1 gives those differing roles to different players instead of asking the same midfielders to do both or only one or the other. You might also argue the wingers in the 4-2-3-1 have mid-field like responsibility (bringing the ball forward) where in a 4-3-3 they can float more like strikers. That's why I'd be looking for two 6s (Eustaquio and Piette) to sit above the defensive line, cause I'd be expecting them to carry defensive duties - I'd expect it to be an attacking formation that is being very pragmatic defensively. If it's only one 6 (Eustaquio) with an 8, then it becomes 4-1-4-1. As it happens, Marsch said on April 1st that he believed Canada needed to be better organized defensively to not give as much away in their attempts to attack. I was so happy to hear him say that. That's bang on, imo. That's how this killer attacking squad needs to mature and it seems that Marsch intends to make that happen. Very exciting!

    • @djknox2
      @djknox2 20 днів тому +1

      @@greglawrence9230 Yup I agree with what I also heard from Marsch. He could end up being a very good fit.
      As for these configurations, yes I meant 4-2-3-1 as that was what Josh was talking about. To me, it is the same thing as a 4-5-1. I never became a pro player, but as a CAM it was understood that 1) the fact I was on the field meant we wanted an offensive central midfield; and 2) if we wanted a defensive midfield I'd likely be substituted with a CDM. But even when on the field, my role became more defensive or offensive depending on the run of play on the field and the strategies deployed. These fancy 4-level configurations seem superficial to me. In a 4-5-1, you have a striker, two outside midfielders/wingers, and 3 central midfielders. How forward the central or outside midfielders play all depends on the run of play and whether the plan is low, mid or high block. Anyway, ok I suppose it's a way of communicating that you want two 6s and a CAM rather than maybe one 6 and two 8s. I suppose this is where the sport has developed beyond my day in it's terminology. The biggest problem a manager faced in my day is having skilled players at the amateur level with low IQ, as they couldn't understand the dynamics of tactics. If adding a 4th level helps players understand, fine, but surely players at this level understand dynamic tactics without grade school line ups?

    • @greglawrence9230
      @greglawrence9230 19 днів тому

      @@djknox2 Well, all this is another area where Marsch seems to align with what you're talking about, cause he says he cares far less about specific formations - it's all about player roles. In the end, even formal formations being put forward are ultimately a tactic in getting the better of an opposing manager/team. Back in the day, if a player was put in the back line the opposing team would be confident they wouldn't be dealing with that player as an attacker. At some point someone (Brazil?) decided it would be tactically advantageous to allow a player to come all the way up from the back and be attacking the opposition. It's easy to imagine the opposing manager/players being caught completely off-guard by that and it causing all kinds of problems. In other words; declared formation hid intent and this was a tactical play. I assume this at least partly explains why such formation variations emerge.

    • @djknox2
      @djknox2 19 днів тому

      @@greglawrence9230 Very insightful on Marsch. YES my point is its not the formation as much as it is about player roles. That's why I can get a little befuddled by Josh focusing so much on line up configuration and arguing the pros and cons: to me, most configurations can equate to other configurations simply by changing the tactical role of certain positions. Whew thanks for sharing your insights. I am long removed from my playing days and just want to make sense of all this technical talk.
      Yes in the old days, player roles were somewhat defined by position, and creativity came from say bringing your tall CBs forward for corners. When I was a young boy, the most common lineup used was a 2-3-5: LB, RB, LMF, CMF, RMF, LOF, LIF, CF, RIF, ROF. I'm not sure if that was a British only legacy or whether other footballing nations had the same concept. Toronto back in those days had a lot of immigrant influences, and my coaches ranged from Scottish to German to Italian. Back in the 70s I remember two advanced approaches being introduced on the global stage: The Netherlands adapted earlier British tactics into what become known as TOTAL FOOTBALL (they didn't really invent it but rather they perfected it). But I think you are correct that it was Brazil who first used FBs from deep defensive positions to become very aggressive offensively. The 4-4-2 had been in use, but it was Brazil who started to have their FBs make overlapping runs that confused and overloaded the opponent's defenders. Anyway, tactics are very interesting, but these elaborate configurations seem to be a lot of smoke and mirror to me.
