“Prisoners in IK-2 work in slave-like conditions...Some [prisoners] decide to commit suicide, which is not as easy in penal colony conditions.” Survivor and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova on the conditions Brittney Griner will face in a Russian penal colony.
Subscribe for the latest official videos.
Brittney Griner was transported to IK-2 Mordovia, the WORST penal colony in Russia.
    - 16 hours work days
    - prisoners sew uniforms for the Russian army and police & getting injured bc of the outdated equipment
    - beatings x torture are common
    - medical care practically not exist
    - when not working in sweatshops, prisoners are subjected to heavy physical labor like digging trenches, breaking up frozen coal or manually sawing giant logs
    - if a prisoner refuses to work, they're sent to a solitary confinement, a freezing cold tiny cell
    - prisoners share barracks with 100 other people, with only 3-5 toilets for all, and no hot water
    - shower (and hot water) once a week
Russian prison system wasn't reformed since GULAG times, if you want to get a peak into it, read Shalamov or Solzhenitsyn.

Wow man. This is sad. I can't believe some of the comments I'm seeing with zero compassion for Brittney. Am I dismissing the fact that she acted foolish in the US with her woke nonsense? No, I am not. But acting a fool doesn't mean she actually deserves all the torture she has coming to her. No one deserves this, especially over a harmless substance. And I know Russia doesn't see it as harmless, but we all know that it is.
Never will I bad mouth America, even if I am critical of the way it functions sometimes, I'll never say that it sucks. Anyone who can think America sucks says so from a place of American privilege and has hasn't seen what a country of real oppression looks like. Unfortunately, that is a lesson that Brittney is learning the hard way, but I maintain that her punishment does not fit the crime.

Firstly Nadya seems like a someone who would have more in common with the average person and less friction with others than BG. With the death and suffering that's going on worldwide and having about 60 other North Americans jailed around the world, Griner's incarceration is pretty far down the list of importance in the big picture. The great majority of online comments do not reflect sympathy. If not for the reasons mentioned maybe it's due to her having managed to irritate many through her actions. The politicians know this too. Her release happening soon is hard to call. Russia has become totally unreliable and dishonest to the point it's like talking with a psychopath. On the other hand the cat is out of the bag so to speak and a lot of people know about this so the perceived value of acting on this is probably greater than any potential downside. It does lead to the question of how much if any backlash would occur which could be an obstacle as well. These things are more complicated than they appear and officials are very cautious of not losing voters when good intentions turn into something used against them. Without a strong reaction from the black community overall as opposed to a few this could be drawn out.
