Cory's passing altered the course of the show, which also affected what was going on with the S4 newbies. Some of the cast and even Ryan have gone on record and said how difficult filming S5 was and if they could remake the decision, it probably wouldn't have happened at all. Also, the creators decided fairly early into S5 to transition the show to focus on Rachel and NY (the news was out ahead of time). So basically, the first half of S5 became a vehicle to move the cast they wanted to NY, write off Tina (Jenna was ready to leave), and end the Glee club/finish off the newbie triangle.
in my opinion, the reason the new cast got sidelined a bit this first half of the season (i don't remember the later half tbh) was because finn was supposed to have a huge storyline focused on him but after cory's passing they must've thought the best way to pivot and bring fans some much needed comfort was to bring the originals back and make it a big finn hudson shrine of sorts.
It makes sense tbh. Also I don't think they made a huge impression over the last season. Specially the newer ones.
Yeah i think this was it. They planned on something with Finn being the coach of the ND and continuning with the season 4 newbies (probably why they got promoted to main cast), and then Cory passing then they scrambled to do something else and the newbies just got lost in the mix.

Like they propped up Marley to be the new ND star during season 4 and they just forget about her in season 5, with her last song being Mary's Little Boy Child, didnt even sang in Nationals and this is her last episode ever😢
While im happy that they were finally giving Tina enough songs and storylines by Season 5, it was already too late. Viewers during this season were so low + too much damage has been done to Tina’s character which truly sucks bc Jenna’s voice is so pretty and powerful and she got more gorgeous as the show went on.
I think Holly and April were responsible for coming up with the montage goodbye video for Mr. Schue.

So, about the S4 new kids.
Post-S3 Glee was suposed to have Rachel as the central character in the NY plot while Finn as the central character in the Ohio plot. On S4 all of the newbies were just part of the recurring cast, on the break between seasons all 5 of them got upgrade to become part of the main cast. Early drafts of their Season 5 plots were probably done and parts of episode 1 and 2 were already filmed when the tragedy of Cory's death happened.
Not knowing exactly what to do without the Ohio lead, the 5 newbies plots on the first 8 episodes were probably based on these early drafts. After episode 8 we had the christmas break that always happens in shows, and before the series came back from the hiatus with 5x09, the producers made their decision, and if I recall correctly, announced that the show would become "New York only" later on the season and that the Ohio plotline would get 5 episodes to wrap things up.
So, with no Finn, they didn't see the need for Ohio or the Glee Club (even though the show is called GLEE lmao) to be in the show anymore, even after so much time working on the new characters on S4... So the new kids got shafted with barely any material due to the more older cast members from the Ohio plotline needing more screentime for their characters who were on their last competition/about to graduate.
And I remember on the day were the whole "let's expose Lea" happened on twitter, Alex (Unique) actually tweeted about getting fired out of nowhere in the middle of the season right after getting promoted to series regular. If memory serves me right, Melissa (Marley) liked that tweet so, Drama! Tthem being left off of the show was definitelly a "we're firing you guys" and not a "our contract with you guys is over, and we don't want to renovate it".
Well, since you've already finished the show on patreon you probably already know that the show being NY-only flopped so hard it had the worst ratings of the series and after 7 episodes they returned to focus on Ohio and New Directions. Unfortunatelly with the newbies either not coming back at all, coming back for a one time cameo, or coming back for a recurring role... They really fumbled their decision there...
Like, at the end of the day we all feel terrible about Cory's death. But how do you use that to justify firing almost half of your cast? That was so unprofessional on their part.
@@fontes9217 in the end of the day, glee was a business and the business plan changed. They knew in season 4 that season 6 was their last. So they made a business decision to focus on the character they had followed longer. They also had to cut cost, and the easiest way to do that is to cut staff. People also need to remember the newbies just were not catching on.
I never knew I needed to see Gwyneth Paltrow singing Eddie Murphy's Party All The Time but it actually worked, that whole scene with the gang in retro getups was so cool. The end scene was so emotional that it actually seemed like a series finale but it served as the transition into the NY storyline for the remaining half of this season. I personally liked the NY scenes later on cause I will see anything with the OG cast more than the newbies tbh. Sure the newbies were shafted and were never seen again after this cause of behind the scenes decisions and cause of Cory's untimely passing. Also there was no need of the whole Rachel and Santana feud, they really wanted to make Santana petty, cruel and vengeful at times. Lea and Naya didn't have the best relationship at times but clearly the producers just wanted to create more drama for no reason. Also hearing Cory's voice at the end, it still hurts that he's gone even after all these years.
Unfortunately this last we see of Marley. Jake and Ryder are not seen again until the series finale
1. You should have started being mad at Santana years ago when she started chipping away at Rachel's self-esteem for no reason, Rachel never did a thing to Santana.
2. Holly and April play was to get music in other club, but Will accepted his fate so they figure they did what they could.
3. Quinn being the egg donor is nuts, who would want her involved considering how crazy she got with Shelby. Good thing we see they had a better choice in 2020.
4. The new kids never caught on in 2012/2013 and with Finn passing they were not needed as a focus.
5. And he worse was in season 4 when they tried to make Tina Rachel-like, but she was not funny or low-key charming like Rachel but in this episode also trying to make Tina "adopted" and Jewish so essentially taking Rachel's background too was beyond stupid.

I love this episode so much
imagine the glee club continuing at Vocal Adrenaline and the season 4 cast transferred at that school. we could've have seen how they fit in that environment with some new cast joining. the potential of the plot like Unique returning to VA

There were some wholesome moments in this episode. So many great covers. Btw, Be Okay is originally sung by Oh Honey and also I liked Just Give Me A Reason and Don't Stop Believin. The series should have ended there.

I do like most of the episodes after this. The show never declined that much for me and I liked they were trying to do some fresh things with the show but in retrospect; yes this should’ve been the series finale and it would’ve been perfect.
I really don’t like the way they pushed out the season 4 newbies and ending the show here would’ve made it a little better given the last scene that they had.
The newbies were not very popular at the time the show aired.
@jac6698 Even so that's shitty just to fire the new cast after only 13 episodes of being series regulars. Plus the full New York episodes weren't to doing well either and they do go back to McKinley in s6 so get rid of them except one. Honestly them getting cut like that makes more happy about Melissa's and Alex's post Glee success, just Jacob and Becca got it too

As far as I’m concerned, the show ended here. There’s literally no GLEE for the rest of this season, and I didn’t care for the season 6 stuff at all.
They found a way to get a majority of the original cast to go to NYC (and those that didn't certainly could've come to visit a few times during the show's run), and it flopped. If they were smart, they would have found a way to have a majority of the cast stay in Lima and go to the nearby community college (or something) and continued with a junior college glee club. That would have made it so easy for them to move Will over there or split his time between a high school glee club with the newer cast and future new cast members and the college glee club. I don't know, I'm not a Hollywood writer, but I'll bet those professional ones could have come up with something akin to this in a heartbeat. The whole NY thing was so bad that most of them came back to Lima and McKinley High anyway in S06 (sorry about spoilers but it is over 10 years later!).
True. I have a vague recollection of the NY focused episodes because I only watched them once and moved on.
I like the NY stuff, not as many characters and less character that were boring ala the newbies.
TBH the rest of this season it´s just garbage. There´s only one real good episode between but overall season 5 was affected so much with Cory´s death and it shows. But thank god they changed it up by season 6 and made a great final season.
