    I had a subscription to WWF magazine as a kid and I remember them printing an article with Ricky holding his son and saying that he was taking time off or had been taking time off because of his young family. I believe more that Vince didn't want the IC title on a baby-face and wanted to make the switch to a heel especially given that Hogan (and then Savage) was top on with the World title. I can see Steamboat with the IC title when Savage turned heel leading in to WrestleMania 5 but having 2 babyfaces with the titles doesn't make sense. I can see Vince logic. Promising Steamboat a year long run probably wasn't the best thing to do as I'd imagine things behind the scenes in WWE can turn on a dime and plans change. Ultimately I can understand Steamboat frustrations, it sounds similar to the frustrations that Bret Hart would have later on.

      Ric Flair had briefly mentioned that in an old podcast episode. He said that Steamboat's wife at the time Bonnie was basically his agent & was the cause of his problems. Flair also said that he never forgave her for dry snitching on him one time about his partying ways(the Kamikaze's , the robe exposure. etc} to people that he had great rapport with

    Sounds like Vince was just being an a-hole. Making him drop the IC belt for asking off for 2 weeks. That's pretty harsh. People take off like 3 months now when they have kids at most companies. Vince seemed to be petty that way where he would play games to pay people back when they didn't do what he wanted and didn't put making money for the WWF as the #1 life priority. To show them that they were replaceable. If a wrestler was gone for 2-3 weeks I am not sure who would even notice. They could even pre-tape interviews or promos to show on tv.
    He also seemed to not utilize guys who came over from the NWA/WCW because they came from his competitor. He didn't properly utilize Arn and Tully, Dusty Rhodes, The Road Warriors, or even Flair when he came over. They may have enjoyed a brief moment in the sun but he ultimately phased them all out or never used their talents to the fullest. At least in my opinion.

      There has to be more to the story than this, and there definitely is. Let's not forget that Steamboat played hot potato with the NWA and WCW as well.

      Point of order here, the champions were only required to defend the title every 30 days, Gorilla Monsoon made sure to remind us of that all the time. Therefore there was no reason why steamboat couldn't have taken the two weeks off. Case closed.

      @STONESGAM Рік тому +1

      @@willshad Yeah, I get that. But if he really only wanted 2 weeks off then I'm pretty sure he could have granted that easily without any games. Fans wouldn't even know he was gone.
      But if he wanted several months off then I totally get it. I'm not sure why he didn't let him hold the title for a long time he was super popular after his WM 3 match. The little kids loved him he was a true babyface. You never know about the politics going on in the background with WWF at the time though.

    Funny that Ricky couldn't talk 2 weeks off for the birth of his first child, yet Vince allowed guys like Brock and Roman to go months without defending the title. Vince was a genius in some ways, and a total moron in others.
