Marella Discovery or Marella Explorer? Which is Best?

- Marella Cruises are one of the favourite cruise lines amongst UK cruise passengers. Formerly Thompson Cruises, this Tui owned line has sought to offer good value, all inclusive cruise experiences to tempt those new to cruising.
Whilst they run a fleet of refurbished older ships, they focus on entertainment and value for money with itineraries packed with port stops. The current Marella fleet has the Marella Discovery and the Marella Explorer as the main stalwarts and favourites amongst loyal passengers who cruise on them time and again. These ships are fairly small mid range ships and don’t offer the range of facilities you’ll get on the modern mega ships being operated by rival lines. But that said Marella have been incredibly successful with these two ships really catapulting the line to its recent successes.
However the two ships are very different, have different designs, layouts and facilities. They both feel very Marella but have different things to offer the passengers. In this video we will go through the main differences between them and also indicate which of the two ships has become our favourite Marella ship. We’ll look at the following:

Just back from Explorer cruise having been on Disvovery 2 last year. On balance agree Explorer just takes it although it is a bit harder to find your way about 😎

Glad you agree with our assessment and yes the Discovery ships do revolve around the central atrium which does aid finding you way around we found. But the Explorer ships do have the Mediterranean bar aft and we just loved that .. Thx again
Personally Like the Discovery's more as the layout is far more intuitive to us, But as all things... It's personal choice.

Wow this was done very very well! You went into great detail about the 2 differences. Many ships with same cruise lines have many similarities but someone alway's tends to have a little edge. Great detail in this video. I think the Discovery looks better, especially with the atrium & glass dome over the pool, but I found the Explorer was much more comfortable with regard to the cabins. Explorer had a much better buffet, with a much stronger all round dining experience.

We definitely want to try one of the Discovery ships next. The cabins do look better on Explorer though. This is really interesting. We really did find that there were so many places you could escape people in the Explorer. Nice to see the Discovery has the indoor pool. Great overview guys. 🍻

We have been on the explorer last year and have booked the discovery for this June , I love the concept of Marella and I am hoping we enjoy the discovery as much as we did the Explorer , thanks for the vlog

Wow it just goes to show that its down to personal experience and preference as my wife and i swore we would never again use explorer or voyager after two disappointing cruises, no such problems on the discovery ships or explorer2,,We even came across two staff members almost coming to blows and the language they used was quite upsetting. Many thanks for posting.
That does sound awful !! Did you complain? And was action taken?
We are yet to try Voysger and are waiting a season to allow the problems and niggles to be resolved.

It does come down to personal preference as my wife and I prefer Discovery over Explorer.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Discovery is a lovely ship without doubt. She does get some of the better itineraries too. But I agree personal preference is a big factor and hopefully I got that across in the video in the relevant categories.
I really enjoyed this video, it was very informative and concise. We've cruised many times but never on Marella but we've recently booked our first Marella Cruise sailing in March on Discovery 2. We sail from Singapore and it's very port intensive and represented great value for money. I'm guessing Discovery 2 will be similar to Discovery.

Good luck as i was on Discovery 2 from Cyprus to Oman via Suez Canal and we had trouble understanding Captain Greg , he never walked around the ship talking to passengers .
