- We've all asked the question before, why is that so expensive? is it worth it? Or sometime we say, you get what you pay for. LED lights for video is one of those areas where sometimes we're not sure if something is justified for its price. When it comes to LED for filmmakers you are not just paying for high cri from your LED, but as you get into more professional shoot, you are paying for consistency between a family of products. Budget LED's don't necessarily work on the long game, but perhaps they should. Until then there are some great videos out there already that give the basic ideas of video lighting, definitely do a general youtube search and just listen to 3-5 different people explain lighting for video. Truth be told I kind of light this type of comparison than just blurting out numbers haha. I'm going to expand this test bench further as I review more lights. I think I can definitely add some more ideas than to just use a wall for the output and a standard color checker chart for colors. But other than that... waiting for the day I do the craziest video, arri lights vs pro budget vs budget budget LED haha!

LOL, I've been looking around for something to add to my small light kit. One of my lights is the Aputure H672 (the daylight only version). Thanks for confirming that I've still got the best option in my kit. I think I'll just grab a few more of their small panels to compliment what I've already got.

Very helpful video. I've been doing hours of research to decide what to buy. I had purchased the gvm800d's a few months ago, that came in defective. I returned them and got a second set, which also came in defective. I don't really have the money for the aputure (plus I really liked the RGB features of the GVM) but the last thing I want to do is need to replace these lights a year down the road. I think Ill bite the bullet and get the aputure. I want to be able to feel confident that I don't have junk.

Great vid man, I was deciding between Neewer 660 and GVM 800-D I think I will go with Neewer since they seem slightly brighter/better... The only thing is with a softbox it might not be strong enough still..

The GVM 800 seems to be the one people would like to know how it compares. In theory the 660 should be a little bit brighter with its number of LEDs. As for the softbox output, this really depends on how close do you have the softbox to your subject for the kind of show you're needing. The panel does very well in controlled lighting environments for a medium shot, but if you go for full body it may not have the look you're going for as the light is more of a spot beam than a wide beam. Great review. Thank you very much. For hobbyists, it is better to get a set of three inexpensive devices than one much more expensive one, which will still be in short supply. Moreover, with three devices, you can solve many more tasks. But for a more expressive comparison, ideally, it is better to take a model with problematic, uneven skin, so that there are more warm and cold spots on the face. Reddish nose, cold bags under the eyes.

You're most welcome! Gotcha, for portraits if its a medium shot in a studio like setting, you may be able to get a decent shutter speed after diffusion. I did review a neewer LED bi-color dimmable softbox setup, but they have since updated to a different model so I'm not sure how good those are in comparison to the ones I reviewed that were not as color accurate out of the box as the Neewer 660

Great review you are very knowledgeable congratulations, in my opinion I think GVM lightening are to pricey and Neewer are great to work and cheap and honestly is almost the same quality.

Glad you enjoyed this video! They definitely are very close in quality, some of the GVM models may have more aluminum for heatsink purposes, but otherwise the budget LED panel market is very very saturated and all perform more or less the same.

Great review. Thanks. BTW, did you come across the LED panels by brand Switti? I guess it sub-brand of Pixel lights. Looks like a pretty good quality one and could easily be placed in the same category with lights in this video. On Amazon, they are sold as a 2 pack kit: Switti 2 Packs Dimmable Bi-color 600 LED. The brand also has an RGB version. From description and reviews, it looks a little better and a bit more expensive than Neewer.

Wondering if you ever heard of Studio Essentials 100W LED Monolight or the zuma lights

I have heard of Zuma light, can't remember where. There's definitely a lot more budget brand 100w COB's these days, I'm hoping I can see more designed like the Neewer Bi-color LED Softbox where you can power it with two NPF batteries. I sort of wish that one was all Daylight or all Tungsten for max output into a modifier. I'm guessing this isn't as possible with the COB due to the voltage needed to drive them. But as LED's get better and better, I'm sure we'll get there!

Ive had bad luck with Aputure with 2 of 3 lights breaking rather quickly and it wasnt their cheap lights. These lights were babied. One has been at their repair facility for over two months and they have no idea where it is.
That is odd about the more expensive lights not holding up. Are you based in the USA? I feel like Ive heard in the USA their repair and customer services seems to be better than in other regions. Not sure how true that is.

Very thorough review.
I love the Aputure lights. One by one, I replaced all my lights with Aputures.
I have 1 x 120DII, 2 x 672W, 5 x 528W, 1 x 672C and a couple of AL160s.
They all give exactly the same white and are still very good when you add CTO (I use Lee filters as I don't trust the plastic ones supplied).
The 120DII is exceptional and I prefer using it to the Arri!

What about the neweer 660 rgb pro and the aputure p60c 🤔

This being an older video, the 660RGB Pro is most likely not going to compete in terms of output because it is uses a bare SMD vs a Lensed SMD like the 660 bi-color. The P60c, if my P60x tests are anything to go off of, is very bright compared to these LED panels. Colors are also quite good on the P60 series. Neewer RGB PRO I suspect is gonna do decently well in Daylight as all bi-color LED chips these days are quite accurate in Daylight. Tungsten is where it will be slightly off with how it handles the red and orange channels.
These are just my educated guesses for now. The Aputure P60 series is going to be a great competitor into the space. It may be more expensive, but it will be justified as they've included key characteristics that sets it apart instead of it just being an expensive branded version of cheap panel LEDs.

I think the Aputure and Neewer share the same daylight LEDs.

It sure seems so, if there is any tolerance difference, it's really hard to tell. Ok... well I do see a slight difference in the daylight LEDs, but it's truly minimal. Had a lot of fun making this video and comparing these lights in an slightly unorthodox way, think I might be able to expand this test bench further in the future to really put these lights into an even deeper test!

I took a look at your videos and they look very well lit already. The ring light you have is generally what most makeup artists use for videos as you are trying to flood your face with light from all directions. But if you're wanting supplemental lights to the ring light, I say Neewer because of its price point and how its Daylight LED"s are very similar to the Apurture. I would also suggest to soften the Neewer light with either a cheap white cloth (think bedsheet) or you could get the neewer LED diffuser softbox that I recently reviewed here: ua-cam.com/video/7JIVzSPy5Kk/v-deo.html
This will help soften up the harshness of the light as you will want to have this light pretty close to you to give a overal soft and pleasant look on the skin.

I saw a Genaray Powerbank 96 at B&H just released recently. Light cost $79, charges with USB-C, and has a built in power bank (although only 3000 Mah Battery so wouldn't dare in bar the biggest on pinches). Hopefully, I'd like to see you review it, specs look somewhat promising.

I'm most likely done reviewing pocket LED's for awhile as I've pretty much done all the creative uses I can from them. Don't get me wrong, pocket LED's have a awesome place in my filmmaking kit, but they are pretty much all similar enough now that you can take your pick that fits you're budget and needs. My current favorites are either the Atomcube RX1 or the Boling P1 that I reviewed, however it seems that as of recent that the Boling P1 is having quality control issues.

Though in the grand scheme of things with lights in this budget, even if one is slightly brighter, its probably not enough to make a drastic difference in how you're using it. Its only when you start comparing budget LED panels vs Budget COB LED's, theres a large difference there.

@@TLDR_filmmaker it’s interesting you mention about the budget cob lights. Do you have a video on those? Some people have told me these budget led panels don’t have enough power as a key light and that it’s best going for a cob like the godox150 or other similar lights, if it’ll be my ownly light.

I'm not sure about GVM, but Aputure has "scenes" that you can save and recall within a group of lights that you setup. Godox doesn't have a dedicated Scene recall persay, however when you do set up a scene (group) of lights, it will recall those settings when you turn on the lights and go into that scene (group) of lights.

This kind of depends on what you're filming. For example, my talking head portion of my youtube is only being lit with one light on my face, I've always done this, but if was going to be filming a narrative project I would like to have more lights in general cause you never know what you may need to compensate for on the set. The background could be too dark, the shadows on the persons face can't be remedied with a simple bounce board, maybe you need a intense hair light for a specific look. So generally speaking, you will want more than one light if you're trying to light a story.
Since you are a beginner, I would make sure you understand how exposure works for your camera to get the looks you want and you can practice using a lamp or a window (with blinds or sheer curtains) and understand the limitations you have when you are closer to the lamp vs farther from the lamp, and how that plays if your camera is closer or further from you (in terms of zooming) and not having the lamp or window in the shot. Once you understand this and how to expose for it, then you'll have a better understanding of how to place these lights and what its limitations are. My general rule of thumb with these budget LED panels is to try and start lighting in a room thats fairly dim. If the room is blasting with natural light, then these panels may not offer you what you're looking for as the natural light is possibly more powerful than the LED panels, unless you can pull some sheer curtains in front of the window limit its effect into your scene.
Lots to play with, but hopefully this helps you get started on your journey as a filmmaker!

If you are strictly wanting RGB and don't care about the Bi-color in those panels. The Neewer will technically be brighter than the GVM, but not by much. Hi , i’m a makeup artist , i like to make a makeup content video such as reels or tiktok . Still confuse what lightning i need to buy . Neewer 660 or Godox led P260c. Which one is better? Before i already had a Glam Light too but thats not enough for the lightning in a big room .
If you're lighting a big room you may want to consider a COB LED with a softbox. Something like the Godox SL60 of Amaran 200d S depending how far away the light is from you.

It really depends on the wedding venue and where you can put the lights that are not too distracting as well as what camera and lenses are you using. For a dark reception setting with a maybe 20'x20' dance floor, these light should do fine and help lighten things up a little bit so that you can get exposure.
For a ceremony it may not look too pleasing as the lighting will look a bit harsh. But generally a church should have enough artificial or natural light, you can use these as fill or hair lights to give the shot more dimension. But if you are trying to light up a darker church, this light may not look the most flattering because you'd need to keep it further away from the alter.
Long story short, it really depends on your needs. There's a million different scenarios when it comes to weddings and what type of look each videographer likes. This is about as general as I can talk about the subject as I figure most people are needing lights to light up the dance floor. Just keep in mind if you are trying to light up the bride in anyway as you don't want them to feel like they are deer in the headlights with something beaming at them. You would instead maybe opt to find a way to bounce light in the room to raise the ambience a little so that you can get exposure and not blind the wedding party.

Thanks for the video, I bought a couple of Newwer lighst and tried to mix them with my aputure amaran f7. I've noticed they have a slight magenta shift when compared to the amaran so I just wanted to ask if you would recomend geling them with plus green gles

I guess it will depend on just how strong that Magenta shift is on the subject you filming. If its not too strong, then a slight gel won't affect your output too much and you can get it closer to a more color accurate space to match up with the F7. If its a super strong shift, it may be best to go ahead and perform your custom WB and use the F7 in a non-key setup.
But in all honesty, depending on the work you are doing. If the lights are just slightly off from each other, in the overall scheme of your image, it won't throw anything off. If one of your LED's TLCI is incredibly off and your actor starts to look green, then that would be a problem...kinda, because with post color tools these days you can fix that. The industrial CFL bulbs did no favors for the subjects, making the camera see their skin as green, but with few clicks, you can get things back on track even with less than ideal lights.

No update on my thoughts with GVM at this time, unfortunately its not likely I will be reviewing their products anytime soon as they've changed their policy with youtube reviewers. We'll see if maybe in the future I'll get to test their products again. Until then, generally speaking. LED chips are getting awfully similar, in general, at this price point. It'll really come down to build and maybe extra bells and whistles.

This really is differences only an expert can tell I suppose. To me it kinda looks the same. In my country, I cannot order from other countries and the stores take advantage of that, selling Neewer at $600.........
What would you suggest?
I do see the GVM 50RS RGB over the other GVM, but if I want 2 of those, I will have to pay $450.

In this case I would suggest learning a bit of color correction in whichever editor you use to cut your videos. In this video I wanted to explore how the panels performed without any correction, most of the oddities can be corrected later in editing. So I would get familiar with those tools sets, especially a toolset called "HSL" if you have it for your editor. And then from there determine what would be the best lighting package thats within your budget that will do what you need them to do for your videos.

I've use them for pretty much all parts of a traditional 3 point lighting setup, it just depends on my exposure settings and composition to allow the light to be either closer or further. These smaller panels can essentially do a lot and are quite versatile because of their size, power when compared to modern DSLR camera sensor sensitivity, and long battery operation. For the starting filmmakers they can be your everything. As someone develops their more powerful kit, these become fill lights.

I currently have the softboxes in for review. The tests that you see here in terms of light output would be different once the softbox is attached, you'll lose some light output but I'm not sure by how much until I test it. In terms of using other diffuses, it will be dependent on the materials sheerness as well as the distance away from the light. Both of these factors will affect the overall light output. It's also worth noting that these panels are powerful when you have 100% control of your lighting situation, if you try to use these to compete against natural light coming from a window, it won't be suffice as they are not powerful enough. I will be showing more tests in my review of the softboxes real soon!

How do you decide what beam angle you need, wide or narrow?

This is quite a loaded question, let me see if I can give you some basic ideas.
Beam = more light power because it is focusing it like a magnifying glass.
Wide = weaker power, but more even lighting so you don't get harsh shadows on what you're pointing at.
If you are diffusing the LED panel to get softer light in general, this is where it gets hard to determine what works best for you because there is a case for any version. The BEAM will give you most power to diffuse because diffusing a light will cut away its output depending on how far you have the light from the diffusion --- and then diffusion to talent.
Wide however will give you the largest diffused area compared to the beam, which means you'll get that nice Hollywood look in romantic films thats really pleasing to the eye vs something like The Matrix where its moody and harsh with shadows.
That is the very very basic concept of what you can expect between the two. This is why most people like COB LED's like the Godox ML60 (My review here: ua-cam.com/video/a7R_i2cwYWQ/v-deo.html )
Because you can either have WIDE or BEAM with the use of the reflector. Not to mention it is small to take with you and gives significantly more power than the LED panels of this size.

It looks like there are 3 different Newer 660's.
The One without the LCD - 660
The One with the blue LCD - 660S
This one with the 2.4g
The last two seem to be the same LED tech.

I'd believe the last two would have very similar results. Most budget LED panels these days perform very similarly, especially at Daylight.

This video is a bit on the old side. The newer 660RGB are probably using newer LED Diodes that should be decently powerful compared to the bi-color. I believe they also have the 660 RGB Pro that will be a little more powerful.

The technical answer is, yes. Would it give you the look you're going for? That's the real question you'll have to consider. These panels will give a bit of a harsh look to the lighting (think 80s rock), if you're looking for more soft etherial lighting, then these won't be powerful enough for you to modify the light to get that kind of look while maintaining enough exposure for your camera to pick up. I know this may not be the best answer, but thats a video I desperately need to make as I get this question a lot and there are multiple variables you need to consider to know if a light is bright enough for your needs. Its a big juggling act between your lights power, the distance its placed, your cameras lens and your cameras capabilities to work with the light it does see. Hope this helps for now until I finally produce my definitive video on this topic.

Aputure also has resale value, where as Neewer doesn't. If you are making an investment, I would suggest Aputure over Neewer. But if Neewer is what you can afford, then go for it. Great video! I was definitely surprised by the 660.

You're definitely right about the resale value. I was too on the 660! I'm not sure if its only for my version, the 2.4ghz version, or if it is the same across the board on all three models. But now what we know it does pretty well in colors, a nice solid budget option!

The plastic is definitely behind the times these days, the light is quite old compared to the newer types of LED panels that are normally made of aluminum. The barndoors for LED panels is nice to use when holding some paper diffusion or gels, sadly it doesn't cut the light as much as we'd like, but still good to have for sure!

You're correct in that 4k is definitely not necessary, I don't see too much a difference on my large TV. The reason I upload in 4k is because of how youtube processes a 1080p video file and how it streams a 1080 that is either uploaded natively at 1080 vs 4k. When uploaded in 4k, the 1080 is cleaner and sharper. This is why I upload in 4k to get the better 1080.
As for the lav mic...well... my channel is more just about delivering information instead of going for a more corporate look. But it doesn't matter as I now use a shotgun mic now :D

@@TLDR_filmmaker take a unc png of it on a 1080P monitor or a portion of 0.5x of the uhd you use. you will find it doesn't do that, but it looks like it does (bi-linear, other algos etc). Also corporate or not, it's easy to match to your mic if you're talking about color consistency, think of the parallels there.
