    Don’t get discouraged which is easy when you go over and over a thing you think you’ve corrected and it keeps coming back. I hear your deep sighs and I’m gonna tell you I’ve been there myself plenty of times but there’s nothing that can replace the feeling of accomplishment when a thing that was busting your chops finally gives in to its master! You’re the master of this domain and it will yield to your will just gotta use that brain of yours. Be cool, stay lose, stay sane🌹

    Yason please take care and put on gloves while you're renovating. The building is old you could be cut or worse exposed to something toxic🌻I just know that you're going to turn this school into a much admired spectacular home. You might not feel it right now but you're so lucky to have seized this opportunity❤

      I do put on glovees alot but need to do more! Most of the time its starting and shutting off the camera I have to take the gloves off so most close shots Im not wearing them! Thank you for your concern! It means the world!

    The grunts made me chuckle! It’s kinda refreshing to see someone do one of these renovations and keep in the real stuff. I’m absolutely over the “perfect” projects that look like they took no time or effort.

      Yeah, I've noticed a distinct lack of PPE for this renovation project, especially for his hands. I'm glad he was wearing a mask. He'll work out the camera stuff eventually, but he may consider, since he's by himself, a tripod for all shots, with a camera that has a remote so he can wear gloves and not have to touch a tiny phone screen for videos. He's got other priorities at the moment but maybe these comments will help spur ideas for him?

    If it were me I would probably get long and wide rolls of aluminum flashing, bend them into a U shape, have long overlaps between pieces (with higher sloped pieces overlapping the lower sloped pieces, and seal the seams.

  • @tracyc380
    @tracyc380 7 місяців тому +2

    Wow lot of hard work there Yason love the contents and the grunting goes hand in hand with manual labor its great . It demonstrate that its not that easy squatting down between the roof and the railing , to scrap away the old tar and improvising with a claw hammer nothing wrong with that ,use what you have got available and over time you will have better tools for the jobs as you go. The railing or fancy lattice wall is so beautiful. I look forwards to watching more of your videos as you slowly progress 🙂

    i wonder if you could create a decent slope after the levelling by just shimming an aluminum sheet or something flat before sealing it up, great work tho

  • @FearsomeWarrior
    @FearsomeWarrior 7 місяців тому +17

    Lead is used extensively on roofs. Especially wild stuff like church cathedrals or fancy estates. It is pliable to fit anything, nearly completely impermeable, and thin enough to get under other pieces to keep water out. Yason knows this but just how widely used lead is for roofs is not something you’d know until you’re dealing with fireplaces and weird slopes and decorative pieces.
    In blanket form it isn’t dangerous unless you are going to be handling it all the time with bare hands. Just like fishing sinkers and wheel balancing weights.

    • @sterlingmullett6942
      @sterlingmullett6942 5 місяців тому

      Doesn't lead dust over time? What about exposure to breathing it in, or touching it from rain runoff over years? I wonder how much of the paint in this building is lead based?
      Some groups online are very concerned over all things lead, especially for children, and view any exposure to children as harmful. Parts per million is 9 for children toys is allowed by government agencies, even though CDC and EPA say no amount of lead exposure is safe.
      Thoughts?

    • @FearsomeWarrior
      @FearsomeWarrior 5 місяців тому

      @@sterlingmullett6942 If it is suspended in paint it is fine. Only when you start sanding or scraping when it requires precaution.
      Same for lead when it is a lump. We have lead sinkers we touch all the time when fishing. Your car wheels have lead balancers. Just don’t lick or handle it daily. As a solid it isn’t a problem.

    HEY!! I subscribe to a channel called My Property Channel. The man is in the UK and seems to have been doing this sort of reno about a billion times in various countries and types of properties. He flips a lot of them. Anyway, why I love to watch him is how frugal he is and how he can figure out how to fix almost anything. He saved parts of lumber from a demo property where he ended up spending pennies rather than thousands of dollars for new wood. I think @ the expense you must be going through and thought it might be interesting for you to watch him in action.

    The good, the bad and the UGLY! At least you're getting to bottom of the issue. My 2 cents worth - the membrane is just rotted out because it's old, doesn't take long with no protection from the sun & elements. Doing a section at a time, starting with the worst area, sounds like "The Plan". At least now you know what materials were previously used.

  • @kofeyh
    @kofeyh 7 місяців тому +3

    Darth Yason, Imperial Roofer (PPE always a good call; can't restore anything from a hospital bed). Also being cautious and getting a solid handle on what is what, might seem slow, but it'll pay off in the long run.

  • @FoxyfloofJumps
    @FoxyfloofJumps 7 місяців тому +1

    For the rest of that membrane, I recommend scoring the edge between wall and bottom, and bottom and roof. Then get an end free, and pull. Then roll as you pull, and it'll get enough mass to pull free mostly seamlessly on its own. Also, putting tension on the membrane lengthwise, rather than peeling back each section individually may be a lot easier on your back and hands for repetitive motion. Picture a bandaid, but instead of peeling it back, you yank it loose mostly parallel with the direction it's already stuck on in. Same thing works for bargain-bin stickers on dvd cases, cd cases, and most other stickers as long as they're not too fresh.

    Jason I love your enthusiasm plus the way you're getting to the root of the problem with the gutters.
    Please do yourself a favor and get the right tools, you can buy an array of different scrapers, what you're working with now just isn't working.
    If it were me funds providing, I would rip the whole lot out, remove the caps, start your material, remorta, then replace caps......I know that's expensive.

    • @watchere
      @watchere  7 місяців тому +2

      I do have some larger scarpers, its hard to tell in the video but the lead pan is actually not perfectly flat, it's got a slight concave to it so with the larger scraper or a floor scraper per say it doesnt touch the middle portion. Also with a large floor scraper I dont have the fine feeling of a hand scraper where if i feel somewhere thats a bit thin i can pull back "the force" a bit (see what i did there). haha sorry for the corny jokes

    They used lead in the gutter system because 1 it wont rott like metal 2 it's easier to bend around corners by tapping it slowly and it's soldered on the seams you will need to prime the lead with old Henry's spray primer in a can only a very light
    coat not heavy, so whatever you decide to go back with, it will bind to the lead. Do not try to torch anything on the lead. You will melt the soldered joints and probably wind up catching something on fire under the slate tile. Whatever you decide to do, it will not be easy to fix. They are some options. What you had on there looked like hot asphalt that was moped on and set up. Then a layer of plastic cement with a layer fiberglass membrane, thus the fibers in the material you were cutting off.
    I was in the roofing industry for 45 year's and seem many of crazy things roofers do.
    Good luck with your gutter system.

    I knew the flashing was installed like a trough. I think the bad patches caused more harm than good by disrupting the slope of the drain. I still think the ornate spindles will facilitate drainage in torrential rains, they are far enough below the windows to work. I guessed copper, but lead was equally prevalent. Clean those bad patches in the troughs out and reseal and I think you'll be good to go.

    First of all, I highly recommend wearing the proper PPE but at the very least some gloves along with your respirator. I also was wondering if you had thought about trying to use either a floor scraper or like a square shovel instead of using a hammer claw and your hands. I'm enjoying watching your videos and hope that you will stay safe while you're working on each project.

      Know it’s tight working up there, but save yourself more aggravation by not throwing all those small pieces of flashing off the roof then having to find and pick them up later. Keep using that small waste container as you work yourself around the gutters and with all those windows you can stage a 33 gallon trash can right inside the window with a construction grade trash bag to dump the waste in. Should save you a lot of time and energy.

    Clean out everthing, put down Peel and stick roof underlayment , it will seal out everyting, then coat it with elastomeric!

    Next question from the old girl with no building experience. I understand the dangers of lead, but if its impenetrable why would tar sheeting be used over the top?

    When you have two days to fix your gutters or run the risk of not only ruining your house but also poisoning the local water supply with lead. No pressure. Yup. Fun times!
    I‘ll be looking forward to the next episode!

    I’m thinking there’s a better tool for this gutter job. Like they use to scrape old linoleum up. But not as wide. Also, wondering if that crumbly stuff was used to level the gutter?

      That is what I was thinking. They are called floor scrapers, ice scrapers, etc.

    It looks better than expected. Sounds like a good plan. Yes. Finding an hour of time is NOT always easy to do. Btw. No one can see where the bubbles are on the level on a phone and many don't have a computer to go to. It's not large enough. 😅
    Catchbasins for temporary is a good idea.

    Have you ever considered Flex-Seal liquid? Comes in black, white and clear. Seals leaks really well. Anyway, rooting for you. 👍🏼

      I looked into the MDS for flex seal, and some long term tests. It seems like it isnt very UV stable for the most part, that was the only reason I decided against it, the rest of it seemed decent!

    Are you questioning our attention sp…Squirrel!…….. 😂 ok, maybe you’re right. You need to be concerned about breathing asbestos but also mold. It’s really good news that through the years they didn’t strip the lead out trying to “fix” the issue.

    Alot of hardware stores have lead and asbestos test. Getting rid of loose material and reasealing is the best bet to stop water inflitration. The substrate sure sounds like tin sheet. This is just what I knew was going to be under all the layers of piss poor patches. Peel and stick snow and ice shield underlayment is my reccomendation and a base layer and then elastomeric roof coating three time up the palacade wall and seal every crack visible .
