That last verse! "I carry your image, your grandfathers coffin. And Ed, if you hear me, I think of you often". Probably my favourite line. This story is so detailed
If you guys haven't yet, you should listen to "Conversations" where Jordan discusses all of the songs on the album including in depth details and descriptions of the stories and letters/monologues. They're really insightful and he speaks very eloquently. You start to really feel the heavy heart and weight of every song that they play once you know what his intentions for the album were and his interpretations of the incidents. I have no words to describe La Dispute or my love for them without sounding corny or cliché, but really they are unlike any band I've listened to and they seem to capture it all with immense sentimentality
I never realized until recently that when he says he will stay away from hotels and Jesus he was referring to King Park. when I realized that my head exploded.
+Corbin Rhodes Think so too. Plus "blood on a carpet" - could be shooter actually killing himself and bleeding out. One way or another, Jordan knows how to drag you in his lyrics (stories if you will)
"I carry your image. Your grandfather’s coffin. And Ed, if you hear me, I think of you often." Holy shit, La Dispute tells such an emotional and detailed story in so little time.
whoever mixes the sound for the audiotree sessions is fucking spot on man. good shit guys, all of the bands that play on audiotree always sound so damn clean and well recorded. always makes the bands sound a lot better.
I have been giving these guys a try for a long time. They are not my cup of tea but this song is beautiful. No doubt that these men are musical geniuses. They are extremely talented and a very well put together band.
I heard the old man’s voice break, stutter once then stop it. I heard A sentence started confidently halted by the sudden absence of a word. Stumbled and he sputtered trying to find it back, something once so simple gone now. When he finally gave up told me, “Aw, it’s like hell getting old.” When you came into the store, did you know you’d show me your scars? I had a heavy heart, he carried a door, it’s shattered pane all wrapped in plastic and he asked if I could fix it, come by a little later help him put it back on hinges. “See, I’m far too old to lift it and it’s not for my house, It’s my son’s.” When you opened up the door, what is it you thought you’d find? (Nobody flinch) Later I came by and backed into the driveway. Got out to find him waiting there to lead me through the side yard to back behind the house where the door frame stood empty and helped me keep it steady while I hammered all the pins in then later on the porch we somehow got to talking, he told me of the house and how is son is schizophrenic so they purchased it for him, the medication working and they figured it would help him fit in-help him lead a normal life. But the pills made him sleep too much. And he couldn’t keep a job as a Result so one day he just gave up on taking them. And that day she had called you, he’d locked her outside of the house. How quickly did you get there? And what were you thinking while walking up? What fears flashed in front of you, taunted you, walking to unlock the door? I remember it, Ed. That story you told me came back clear tonight here while writing. And you should know the feeling never left me-the weight of my heart-when you showed me the scars on your arms, when I looked in your eyes and I heard what you said how you probably would’ve died were it not for to care for your daughter and wife. How he drove in the knife, still your son. How you seemed to look through me to some old projector screen playing back the scene as you described it on a movie reel, as real as the minute when it happened, that memory moving behind me. That moment that changed you for good. And he drove to the house and pulled into the driveway. Got out to find his wife waiting, frantic. She’d come by to check, found that pillbox was empty, went out to the pharmacy to fill up his prescription and came back to a locked door and could not get back in. She’d knocked and she’d knocked but he wasn’t responding. You put the key into the lock and turned it. Felt the bolt slide away. Slowly open. Went into the hall, his son held a knife, standing off in the shadows, lunged forward and tackled him. Stabbing him over and over and breaking that window. He fled up the staircase. The ambulance came, stitched and filled him with blood while the cops took his son with his wires so tangled his father was a stranger. And I sit in my apartment. I’m getting no answers. I’m finding no peace, no release from the anger. I leave it at arms length. I’m keeping my distance. From hotels and Jesus and blood on the carpet. I’m stomaching nothing. I’m reaching for no one. I’m leaving this city and I’m headed out to nowhere. I carry your image. Your grandfather’s coffin. And Ed, if you hear me, I think of you often. That’s all I can offer. That’s all that I know how to give
i have a playlist for songs that emotionally cripple. majority of it is this band, that keeps me alive. this song, all our bruised bodies, and a letter are my favourite. hope i see them someday.
add king park and most beautful bitter fruit to that list. They are definitely just as good live. Saw them at Guerilla in Manchester and they were so good.
I was worried before I saw them play that the vocals wouldn't be clear. I don't know if it was the venue or because he actually said his lyrics, but it sounded phat. I saw many videos before with them playing and he very rarely said his lyrics, kind of like Jason of letlive.. I dunno about anybody else, but when I pay to see a show I do expect the band to actually play
I cry every time I listen to this song. I love how they can tell such a heartwrenching story in only five minutes. This band is beyond talented and they bring the emotions out of me that no other band has ever brought out.
Been listening to these guys for 4 years now. This song contains the best lyrics and passion in my opinion. "I sit in my apartment, i'm getting no answers. I'm finding no peace no release from the anger. I leave it arms length, I'm keeping my distance from hotels and Jesus and blood on the carpet." So damn intense.
unearthing this comment from the depths of your memory and youtube history to congratulate you on ten years with La Dispute. i hope you’re doing well, friend
This song, and this whole album, is hands down the most powerful piece of music I have ever come across. This bad shows emotion in a way that not many can.
La Dispute just bump out these tracks that are so vibrant that your entire being and soul hums along... I hope these guys come to South Africa one day...
you know what touches me..... he says "stitched and filled YOU with blood while the cops took YOUR son". he says it like he singing the song to ed.. that makes so touched..
Been listening to this band for the better part of 5 years now. I knew about Audiotree live, and that's how I find some bands as well. I didn't know they performed on here. Fantastic music all around. Love La Dispute!
I remember playing a few shows with you guys in frankenmuth and a couple other places around michigan. your live shows are incredible and every album blows me away for real
What took me so long to find out about Audio Tree!!? So many bands I love playing some of the best sounding sessions I have ever heard!! So rad, so stoked, gotta dig it!
Love these guys! Real passion and deep emotional lyrics combined with cutting edge riffs. Voted one of the Best Live Shows of 2015 by Alternative Press Magazine.
I've watched this version more times than i can count. I came back to it tonight after listening to, conversations, where Jordan breaks the songs down and explains more so what he wanted them all to mean. After hearing him talk about the story. I wanted to see is face, read his emotion while performing this song. Its such a perfect and beautiful retelling of a story, and you can see it in Jordan face the whole time that he feels it to his core. Especially the face he's makes at the end and how suddenly he backs away from the mic. His writing style, and way with words and unlike any other. I will never stop loving La Dispute. I remember the first time I ever heard them, changed my life. So cheesy but so true.
These are just the singles we pull, the full session which includes 'U and I in Unison' can be found at Audiotree Live's website which is linked above..
Definitely my favourite band. their songs tell such detailed stories. Always impressed by how poetic these guys are, no matter how many times I listen to them.
This is true music. His voice is different and unique. The lyrics are amazing. They tell a story and vivid enough to imagine the scenes. They are poetic and very powerful. I would love to see them live some day. The melody ties into the whole song which I find truly amazing.^-^
listening to this after listening to "conversations" .. wow edit: here i am 6 years later, it's crazy how real this performance is even after all this time. We love you, La Dispute.
My sister is mentally ill and she tried to stab my dad back in March. She'd had little outbursts my whole life and it always felt like we were all waiting for some breaking point. There were no places to send her, and not a lot we could do as far as getting her help other than just medication. My dad managed to get the knives away from her and the police came so quickly and took her away and she spent 3 days in jail, she wouldn't eat anything and she was really sickly looking by the time my parents visited. They got the district attorney to change the charges so she was just in a mental hospital instead of jail. She was really well behaved there though so she got released, and they said they'd try and find a host home for her so that we didn't have to worry about her being a danger. 6 months later and they still haven't found one. I worry so much sometimes it'll happen again, and everyone will be sorry it happened even though they didn't do shit, and my dad will be dead. People never really talk about how hard it can be to live with mentally ill family members. Not that it isn't hard to be mentally ill as well. I guess I just wanted to say how much this song means to me on a personal level.
audiotree you do pick great bands. it seems your starting to cover almost all of the bands i listen too. haha. just a suggestion, maybe look into So Long Forgotten. they seem like you guys' style. and id love to see them grow as a band.
Thank you, you're awesome! While we're on topic; I'm not sure if it isn't just me, but when I click on 'video' from La Dispute sessions, it links me to the video from session with William Beckett. Just pointing out in case it's true for anyone else.
This entire album hits me hard. But this song in particular. I took care of a dad in the trauma bay that wasn’t as lucky. His schizophrenic son was trying to hurt himself and the dad tried to stop him. The son stabbed him twice in the heart and he died in the trauma bay. He had a bracelet on his arm that said “championship fathering” on it. This was 9 years ago and it still hurts.
"Ed, if you're listening, I think of you often. That's all I can offer. That's all that I know how to give."
I tear up every time I hear that line.
who is ed ?
@@GoubrinSleyah Ed is the man who was stabbed, hence the song's title
This song still rips me apart in 2020
That line haunts me now, the last words my grandmother said to me in her hospice bed was “think of me often”
Same.
That last verse! "I carry your image, your grandfathers coffin. And Ed, if you hear me, I think of you often". Probably my favourite line. This story is so detailed
my body gets tense when he sings those lines:) i freakin love that sensation
Best lines on the album IMO
If you guys haven't yet, you should listen to "Conversations" where Jordan discusses all of the songs on the album including in depth details and descriptions of the stories and letters/monologues. omg thank you !!! I feel the same about them, it's impossible to describe.
I agree with you
i listen to it very often. I’m going to see La Dispute this Sunday and they’re playing Wildlife in full and I cannot wait!
I never realized until recently that when he says he will stay away from hotels and Jesus he was referring to King Park. when I realized that my head exploded.
BaddAmerican hotels = King Park, Jesus = I See Everything?
BaddAmerican REAL SHIT
+BaddAmerican ffffffUUUUCCKKK
+Michael Schultz i feel like he's referring solely to King Park. Because the shooter was mentioning Heaven and killing himself.
+Corbin Rhodes Think so too. Plus "blood on a carpet" - could be shooter actually killing himself and bleeding out.
One way or another, Jordan knows how to drag you in his lyrics (stories if you will)
Fucking hell these guys are incredible.
Ed passed this week. However his story will live forever thanks to this masterpiece. RIP Ed. And thank you La Dispute, for everything.
La Dispute has the most powerful lyrics
"I carry your image.
Your grandfather’s coffin.
And Ed, if you hear me, I think of you often."
Holy shit, La Dispute tells such an emotional and detailed story in so little time.

I'm so glad you recognise how good they are even though you aren't a fan yourself, thanks for leaving that comment!
I was going to leave a very similar comment, but you beat me to it! well said
The last minute and 40 seconds is the most powerful lyrics. Goosebumps everytime
I heard the old man’s voice break, stutter once then stop it. I heard

They are really good live, powerful, loud but still good to understand, energetic and everything.

i cri evry tym
Nicole Kafarova same, their music just goes straight through me to my soul and makes me feel. the lyrics and over all composition is amazing.
Give King Park a listen. Equally a tear inducing song
Absolutely fact. Miss their music.
4:45 goddamn, that passion and emotion in his voice. fucking overwhelming.
jesus the chills I get every time listening to this it literally the emotion just kills my feels
I think La Dispute is the only remaining band that creates masterpieces like this.
2:10 looks like he is shocked by his own incredible lyrics and the story behind...fucking awesome!
Dude it's like they sound better live. Not that the recording sounds bad. Such a talented and poetic band.
its just got that extra punch that only live performances can have, it makes it way heavier imo. it sounds more badass than the cd version
I've listened to this album start to finish thousands if times.... It still gives be goosebumps. Every time.
What a powerful song. Gets me every time.
honered to live in their hometown, it's good to know that someone's looking out for crumbled old Michigan. These guys are brilliant
The guitar at 1:35 is fucking fantastic.
I still come and listen to this specifically for the guitar sometimes. So beautiful
The lyrics are absolutely stunning.
Been listening to these guys for 4 years now. This song contains the best lyrics and passion in my opinion.
"I sit in my apartment, i'm getting no answers. I'm finding no peace no release from the anger. I leave it arms length, I'm keeping my distance from hotels and Jesus and blood on the carpet."
So damn intense.
unearthing this comment from the depths of your memory and youtube history to congratulate you on ten years with La Dispute. i hope you’re doing well, friend
La Dispute always gets me with their lyrics meshing so well with the rest of the atmosphere created. Absolute chills. Jordan's delivery is perfect.
This song, and this whole album, is hands down the most powerful piece of music I have ever come across. This bad shows emotion in a way that not many can.
The last part is amazing. just putting yourself in that persons point of view writing something like this down just brings chills to my spine
This band is special.
La Dispute just bump out these tracks that are so vibrant that your entire being and soul hums along... I hope these guys come to South Africa one day...
His voice is so perfect doing this as long as they been doing shows. Insane. Beautiful
Love this song, the music and the lyrics hit so hard together. Master craftsmen.
Holy shit this is amazing.
you know what touches me..... he says "stitched and filled YOU with blood while the cops took YOUR son". he says it like he singing the song to ed.. that makes so touched..
"That's all that I can offer...That's all that I know how to give." That ending gives me chills!
Been listening to this band for the better part of 5 years now. I knew about Audiotree live, and that's how I find some bands as well. I didn't know they performed on here. Fantastic music all around. Love La Dispute!
I wish I could go back to the night I saw them play this live. It was the best night of my life. I cried I was so happy.
The members of La Dispute and Listener are the most powerful story-tellers I have ever heard.
This song gives me chills throughout the whole song....and i love it
Holy crap that vocal. it's AMAZING!
I feel like a fool to only now be discovering this song but I can’t get over how perfect it is. I’m obsessed 😂
The way in which this session was filmed complements the music beautifully. Thanks, Audiotree.
they will always be my number one favorite band.
I remember playing a few shows with you guys in frankenmuth and a couple other places around michigan. your live shows are incredible and every album blows me away for real
awesome story behind this song, such an inspirational band to me.
I saw these guys live in NYC. They put the drummer in front of the singer. Was a powerful night
so much emotion in this band/song
Can't wait to see them in July!
Oh it's like hell getting old!
What took me so long to find out about Audio Tree!!? So many bands I love playing some of the best sounding sessions I have ever heard!! So rad, so stoked, gotta dig it!
Such an incredible song.
I remember I was listening to this song one night, and I realized what the song story was.. wow there way of music and writing is great!
Love these guys! Real passion and deep emotional lyrics combined with cutting edge riffs. Voted one of the Best Live Shows of 2015 by Alternative Press Magazine.
Simply amazing
Amazing.
This is beyond beautiful. Such a unique voice, such lovely instrumentals. All is perfect, all is La Dispute.
the love i have for this band

I heard they’re making a new LP! So psyched
They are really amazing I want to see them live!
I love how he pushes the vocals so hard at the end. Sounds so much grittier than on the album. I love this version.
Definitely my favourite band. their songs tell such detailed stories. Always impressed by how poetic these guys are, no matter how many times I listen to them.

God this band is wonderful
so many goosebumps
12 more days!!!! I can't wait to see these guys!
Fixed! Thanks for the heads up.
Goosebumps.
Who are you to judge how much passion someone puts into their music???
A-fucking-mazing. If someone told me this was the studio cut, I'd believe them.
His voiceeeee
holy shit.
Incredible band on record, and just as good live. Inspiring!
listening to this after listening to "conversations" .. wow
edit: here i am 6 years later, it's crazy how real this performance is even after all this time. We love you, La Dispute.
Fckng love this song. Thanks for putting the video up!
This is amazing.
One of my best friends committed suicide a few years ago. The last part of this song makes me think of him. Miss you Jake.
My sister is mentally ill and she tried to stab my dad back in March. She'd had little outbursts my whole life and it always felt like we were all waiting for some breaking point. This and a Poem are my favorites.
This song is like the movie Memento. It starts with the beginning and the end and finishes in the middle.
Raw, Impassioned, Beautiful, Honest, Heartbreaking, Post-Hardcore Narration.
That kit sounds really nice
audiotree you do pick great bands. it seems your starting to cover almost all of the bands i listen too. haha. just a suggestion, maybe look into So Long Forgotten. they seem like you guys' style. and id love to see them grow as a band.
That camera work is incredible!
Check out La Dispute- Violinist sessions. Studio recordings filmed from one camera. Really awesome
4:45 and onward is fucking freight train hitting me repeatedly in the face. Fuck.
Somebody give Jordan nobel prize already.
Thank you, you're awesome! While we're on topic; I'm not sure if it isn't just me, but when I click on 'video' from La Dispute sessions, it links me to the video from session with William Beckett. Just pointing out in case it's true for anyone else.
this is sick
This song brings on waves of feels..good and bad...much love La Dispute(:
super tight.
Hey Audiotree! I love you.
Complete genius.
I used to hate this band, now I can say they're one of my favourites. It took me a long time to warm to them but i'm fucking glad I did
Mmmmmmmmm does my soul good.
This was 9 years ago and it still hurts.
art.
their live sessions are like a pat on the back for the fans like Yea... they are that good lol
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get them to do an audiotree performance of Falling down never get back up again!
can't find any news articles about the edward benz story
my ears are in love with some guys........ and they are from la dispute. fucking genius, really really good.
