  • The Bucks are just 6-7 under coach Doc Rivers after starting 30-13 with Adrian Griffin. In this enhanced segment from the Thinking Basketball podcast, Ben and Cody break down why Milwaukee is struggling -- it is the new coaching hire? The synergy between Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo? Or something else?

      Idk I feel like everyone who watches the NBA is well aware of how good he's been. He's gonna finish top 5 in MVP again.
      I think what's been overshadowed is how Dame's presence positively affects his teammates on offense. The focus has been on Dame's shooting struggles, the defense, and the lack of chemistry on Dame/Giannis PnR,, but a big reason why Giannis is shooting 62% is because of Lillard.
      The extra space allows him to get to the rim more easily and defenses can't load up in quite the same way with Dame and Beasley out there. And to his credit Giannis is taking advantage. He's settling less than he has since at least his first MVP season, he's playing off his teammates more, and his short mid-range game is better.

    This is the value of a player coach. I remember when RJ and Channing Frye were asked about who the best coaches they've ever played for in the NBA and the first thing both of them said was it depends on the coaching style. Most fans don't realize that coaches aren't just x and o's guys, some coaches are really good at developing young players (Kenny Atkinson in Brooklyn), some are great at getting the most out of their players (Ty Lue), and some are players coaches like Doc. It probably is more of a mental thing for the bucks, a sense of clarity, that has improved them along with potential schematic changes.

    • @kurgo_
      @kurgo_ 2 місяці тому +3

      Fun thing to say considering how many former players of his detest him in a very public way, without even going to how many times he's thrown his former players under the bus rather than hold himself accountable.

    • @farhansarkar2394
      @farhansarkar2394 2 місяці тому

      @@kurgo_That's a fair point, but there are also player's that love him, publicly I know Pierce and Garnett do. From what I've seen Reddick, Rasheed Wallace, and probably Ben Simmons don't like him.
      The main point is his experience is giving the Buck's players a sense of clarity that Adrian Griffin couldn't. All the players wanted was a game plan on both ends of the game, consistency. And Rivers offers that, you can even see Damian Lillard looking like a good defender after the all star break even though scheme wise it is mostly the same stuff.

You literally said that they were doing drop against the Heat, which is what the personnel preferred versus the blitz Griffin defense. Doc is akin to Bud; he is going to fix the regular season woes and play the correct defense with the personnel, but in the playoffs it will be more based on the players as there won’t be many smart adjustments like Spoel would make. So for example you’re saying the guys around Giannis and Dame don’t attack the basket so closing out shuts down any interior offence. How much of that is because the roster can’t penetrate and how much of that is because the gameplan is that the lanes should always be clear for Dame and Giannis so no one should be stepping inside, even if it’s within their skillset?

However impossible, they needed to move Middleton not Holiday and I imagine that was why the Bucks seemingly out of nowhere after months of Heat intrigue and acquired Lillard. In the end Giannis' impatience and flexing might have resulted in the Bucks never getting to the finals because the way this team is currently constructed just doesn't match-up against the Celtics (who are somehow both younger and more experienced).

    While Doc most likely is not gonna lead the Bucks to a Championchip, neither was Griffin and whoever claims that the coachingchange was a mistake must be blind or not watching. Because it is not even about thinking Doc is a good coach, it is about realizing how terrible Griffin was and that it was unavoidable to fire him. Not only did he lose the team personally, but on the field he just had them do stupid stuff like Dame and Beasley crash the offensive glas, play a high pressure defenese without having a POA defender, have Brook and Bobby pick up guys way outside the threepoint line.
    All Doc has done so far is revert back to what worked under Bud and thats where they are getting back to as even the stats prove. He went back from all the things I mentioned above, that might make you win regular season games with scores of 130 to 123 versus the Bulls, but there was no basis for any successfull Playoffgames and no chemisty at all.
    Nobody expects Doc to develop some magic and make them unbeatable, but if he just gets them back to the basics that worked for them, thats fine.
    While it will be frustrating, if he really blows a 3-1 lead in the second round, thats further than Adrian Griffin would have ever gotten this team. The progress might be meaningless to the overall league and general fans since most of them only care about RINGZZZ, but to most Bucks supporters it actually means a lot going from the certainty that you will fail in an ugly way and implode to probably still failing, but in a less ugly way und maybe only in the second round.
    It was addition by subtraction, because no matter what you think of Doc, he couldn't be worse or as bad as Griffin was and he has proven that so far, even if he is not flawless, didn't fix everything, still makes mistakes, communicates terribly and most likely won't bring a ring.

A lot of times it seems like guys are just standing around watching Giannis and Dame. Everyone on that team needs to step up and show a greater sense of urgency. Dame has got to work on his play making skills to get others more involved. He still would rather do everything himself like in Portland.

    @smgyro1476 2 місяці тому +8

    You guys are being super disingenuous and using just one specific game against Miami which was a back to back and they had some back sliding on the defensive improvements they had made before. The screen navigation is better, the switching execution has improved, they're more physical, the scheme is similar to what they did under Bud and what Griffin wanted, except Doc explained everyone's roles in the defense more clearly so their execution of that scheme has been better with a few games being examples of not performing well on the night and slipping back to what they used to look like more often. Also they aren't crashing the glass offensively as much anymore in favor of getting back on defense. They are getting matched up much better in transition and so forth. The change has worked out. Also obviously the scheme wasn't going to change dramatically because Doc has explained that he didn't want to overwhelm guys in the middle of the season with a bunch of new terminology that would start making them think when playing defense rather than reacting instinctually. Also considering that they didn't have many practices left to try implement new schemes, it only further convinced him that he shouldn't overdue trying to make adjustments. Great reasons that make a lot of sense. The off season is where they can try to implement new things. Also they've used even more trapping and switching into their defense which were things Griffen wanted to do but wasn't a good enough coach to explain how to execute it properly with the players. Doc has done a better job of getting them on the same page. You're using the Miami game because it's an example of a night where they just didn't execute as well with screen navigation so when they finally did adjust, Miami was already hot and so they started hitting tough jumpshots that they might not normally make. Also Bam does a ton of moving screens. Since then they've been even more aggressive with their contests and screen navigation, deflections, etc. and the defense has improved a lot as a result. The idea that NO changes have occured is outright dishonest. Their point of attack defense inproved. Malik is better at navigating screens, he's more physical while not fouling, and his effort has thrown people out of rhythm even if the play doesn't look perfect and he's forced to recover. Dame is also just putting more effort and has improved at screen navigation and using physicality to disrupt guys, keeping the ball in front of him, etc. The offense and defense are both still developing but they have made improvements. Since the all-star break they have also begun to drive and cut more often, rather than just spotting up all the time. That bad habit does rear it's ugly head up at times, with iso ball happening too often, Bobby posting up when he shouldn't, Brook taking an ill advised threes, etc. However, it's not as disastrous as it used to be. I'll acknowledge that this video seemed to be recorded before all star break though so I'll give you a pass on that.

    Of the 15 games only a handful are actually good offenses like the Nuggets, Suns, Mavs (w/o) Kyrie. It’s also inflated because they played teams like Grizzlies, Blazers, Hornets 2x, 76ers without Embiid. They struggled against teams who can actually spread the floor
