We had a wheaten for 17 years! She was wonderful with everyone and I still miss her so much! I'd love to get another someday. She was so puppy like her entire life, and such a quiet dog too. Super affectionate and just loved being with us
My Wheaton is 5 years old and I couldn't love him more. He is a perfect companion. I take him to a groomer, so I don't have to deal with that. When you talked about them drinking and dripping water, I had to laugh out loud! I am so well trained by now that when I hear him drinking water I run for his towel and stand ready to wipe the beard when he's done. I've done that since he first came home with us so he's used to it and even seeks me out if I do miss getting there quick enough.
You sound like a good owner, can you tell me: shedding? And how about fighting with other dogs? the only terrier I ever had was really nice--but not with other dogs, fought at the drop of a hat.
@@jimquantic no shedding at all. I am allergic to most other dogs, but not my Wheaton. Plus his fur is super soft. He is super sweet and a great companion. He doesn't do well walking on leash and will not tolerate a shut crate. He's happy to be in his crate, but only with the door open. My grandson has two dogs and when they come visit my dog is great. He's pretty excited for a good while and they play, but no fighting.
Diana B. Weird how they die young. Mine at 2 years old had protein/stomach problems and almost died at a young age. But with surgeries and change in diet she lived! She’s alive right now at 8 years old :) hoping she will stay alive for many years to come ❤️🙏🏻
They are the most beautiful dogs, they have a gorgeous tail which isn't docked in England or Australia. They are fantastic loyal family pets. We love our beautiful boy
How would you describe his temperament? Would you say the video did a good job of describing the breed for the most part? I live in the US, and although I’m fairly certain I’ve seen a few of them, I don’t recall ever hearing anyone mention the name of the breed. I like the fact that they don’t shed a large amount of hair at the beginning of Spring. Also, I wish Americans would stop docking tails. It’s such a selfish, cruel, and utterly unnecessary thing to do.
The province I’m from its illegal to dock the tails. My first boy had his tail docked so I didn’t know what they looked with a tail. they are beautiful with a curly tail. Our second boy has a tail.
We have been fortunate enough to have 2 SC Wheaton terriers in our family. Best Dogs Ever! They are sensitive to harsh teasing or words so be firm but fair with your Wheaton. You will be loved forever!
We have a shelter pet that looks a lot like a Wheaten or a Wheaten - Poodle - Schnauzer Mix. Behaves like described in the video, for sure. Very bright and reads body language and knows a lot of words. He is very bossy and when we don't do as he wishes, we get pawed, herded, howled, jumped on, the stink eye, knocks phones or books out of your hands, and when he just can't hold out anymore, we get nipped. He jumps up, grabs a shirtail, or your hind end. He never gets scolded; however, we do have a beeper box collar which works very well. Overall, very wilful and chases and digs for all creatures smaller than him. We think he had a hard life till we adopted him...he was about 6 months old and weighed 11 lbs. He's now at 22 lbs.
Our Wheaten is very sociable, loves people, kids, other dogs. She is our first dog and she is 3. Loves snow, but does not like hot weather at all. Leash walking can be challenging as she is a sniffer, but is very good off leash. Does not bark. Super playful, loving and smart.
Our family just lost our wheaten Annie (Annie bear) in October. She was the best. Sorry to hear about Bentley but I definitely know the pain of losing such an amazing dog
Best dog ever! I've had a Collie, German Shepard, a Golden and a Wheaten. All great dogs but the Wheaten was a lover, he was hilarious and the best companion I ever had.
It's anecdotal, but I'm highly allergic to (most breeds of) dogs yet I was able to grow up with a Wheaten. Not only was I not allergic to her hair/fur, but she never shed -- EVER, like never-ever. She had to be brushed frequently (which she disliked) and taken to the groomers to be sheared like a little baby lamb (which she loathed). For someone who loves dogs but is allergic, the pros outweigh the cons for this breed.
Lizzie McDermott Is my wheaten the only one who gets scared and attacks vacuums and things that make that sort of sound. 😂 my friends have dogs and none of them do that 😂
Warrior Cloverpaw mine does the same as well if I sneeze she jumps up and looks at me strangely. Door bell on tv made her insane as well. Now to the later half of 2-2/2 yrs she has finally. Someday down. Great breed. Looking to get a second one.
Dogs Wiz my 2 yrs old is as you see it. She loves kids but the Wheaton greatn can knock over an unsuspecting youngster or wabbly adult. But of all the breeds I have owned. She has the best disposition. A soft mouth and glad to give up any object. A bit of a stretch as a pup due to the high energy but worth every moment and I can’t wait to get a second. My best gal.
A real wheaten will be friendly with kids . It can be dodgy with other animal's. They are a hunting dog . If you have another dog that is not submissive you might have trouble. I have seen wheaten tearing rottweilers apart
Mine is 2 years old and absolutely clueless, she loves kids and other dogs. But she’s a shithead. They tend to be really picky eaters, and just weird little spunky dogs. They are the best, and super sweet loving dogs. And it’s totally true that they won’t go out in the rain, and they’re unreasonably strong and impossible to move. 10/10 would recommend.
My wheaten is 10 now. He is the first dog I have owned, and I cannot imagine a better dog! Fun loving, goofy, very smart, obedient, great with kids, friendly with other animals, non-allergenic. I would highly highly recommend this dog breed for families. The only caution is that due to the fact that they love to jump and play, they might knock little ones over by accident. Although, our wheaten has now learnedd to be very careful around our young niece and nephew. Again, if you are thinking about getting a dog, wheatens are highly underrated. Also, they look very much like a labradoodle, so why would you get a mutt when you can get a purebred?
Our 13 yo wheaten is an absolute regal queen who, as said before, must think rain beneath her. A mud puddle on the other hand... She's so sweet, even as she loudly her snores in her advancing years. Still plays like a puppy but her joints hurt so it ends early. Still walks twice a day and delights us with her highly intelligent sense of humor when's she's just hanging out. Id say this video was highly accurate about all stages of wheaten companionship. Oh and the soft mouth thing... Absolutely the most gentle treat receiver and preforms "leave it" surprisingly well, given how headstrong she is!
So this is where my lurcher gets her crazy energy from. She acts just like this. Very friendly, shorter haired, but has a lot of wheaten terrier in her along with the traits.
We have adopted our daughter's older Wheaton terrier, she is not messy, her hair is kept pretty short. She doesn't have much of a beard, I think the beard is optional. She is a very nice dog and likes to go for walks and she eats well and is not a picky eater.
I am on my 5th Wheaten Terrier. Love the breed. They are smart and train well. The one I have now is a rescue. He is a good dog, his biggest problem is he has separation anxiety. I have him for 8 months now and he still is suffering from the anxiety. I have made some progress, but when it comes to actually leaving him alone he does not do well. He pants heavily, and usually has his front paws wet from panting. I do have him on meds, but that doesn't seem to be helping either. I have to crate him or else he will pee and poop. If anyone has any tips I would appreciate it.
I haven’t owned a Wheaton, but we do have a now older Labradoodle…they have some Wheaton in them to soften the coat…and being nearly 80 lbs, was very strong and could be unpredictable (I’ve got the “new” R shoulder to prove it). When he was 2 years old, I got a Smooth Fox Terrier as a companion and playmate for him. The pup came from a home breeder who was in a bind because of a necessary heart surgery, and the pup was only 6 weeks old when I brought home all 4lbs of her! I was leery about how Riki would take another dog in the house. I put her down between his huge paws as he laid on the floor, and to my surprise and delight, he was like an angelic stepmom to her. Fox Terrier’s can be difficult to house train, but she learned to ring the bell I’d hung for Riki, though I kenneled her at night. What was your question? Oh, yeah, get a playmate for your dog! Worked for us! Unfortunately, we recently lost our little 18lb Bella to lymphoma not long ago, and Riki is an old man now, still mourning the loss of his friend. Wheaton is a breed I’m looking for to; well, not replace, never can replace a loved pet, each is so different with their own quirks and giggles, each, the best dog you’ve ever owned, but blunt the pain we know is soon to come. A companion helped us a lot as they both were high energy dogs, and could chase each other around the yard if we couldn’t get to a park that day. In speaking with our vet re: a young dog learning from the older one, he agreed that was common, but they may also learn the bad habits like garbage can raiding, and while Riki had a deep, respectable bark, which I encouraged when someone came near the house, Bella could hear an ant cough in the yard and bark. That’s on me. Not trustworthy with children, and because she was small, Riki, the love muffin, so big, she was less intimidating to kids…not a good choice, we had tell so many kids “no” when asked to pet her. She never bit, but was a bully, it appeared to me. Sweet with us, not very social with people. And shed 20lbs of undercoat/day. Get a companion dog!
We have one, she's a great dog and does well alone but fireworks freak her out. CBD definitely takes the edge off for her, you could try some for short periods of time to see how he does if this is still a problem, and maybe he'll get more used to being separated.
Wonder if they can live in a house with chickens around?. I live in County area a lot free range chickens in my patio. But i do have a Australia Cattle Dog. My dog as learn to not kill the chickens but he’s need a friend to play I been thinking on this dog for my allergies but good to play with our dog. I wonder if he can be teach to not kill the animals in the back yard.
I really want one but highly dislike the hair in eyes. If I trim it so the dog can see does it effect them negatively that i not thinking about? Also not a fan of the big beards and would even want to trim the hair a little on the side of the nose.
Many people cut off the fall (the hair in the face), the beard can also be cut short. It all depends on what you are looking for. If its a home pet then of course you can trim both of those areas. The dog doesn't mind :)
If you ask the groomer for a puppy cut. They'll cut the hair back from their eyes. The hair doesn't grow like that. All of the hair on his head grows evenly. That's just the way they groom them. You do have to trim the hair on their nose so it doesn't grow into their eyes. Every time I give my wheat and terrier a haircut it takes us a while to get used to how surprised he looks!
best dog ever but they do are so different i have had 3 of them 2 of them were so sweet and gentle boys the one I have now Max is 62 pounds of pure muscle incredibly oversized last year unfortunatley i found him biting a full grown racoon too death after watching my security cams we saw he ripped the poor thing off of a lower branch jumping up to grab him. Hes also caught many birds in the backyard I try and not let him out to long unattended anymore his prey drive is so intense i swear its all he thinks about all day long

Sounds like a allergice reaction. According to my vet, SCWT are prone to staff infection and it causes itchy skin and must be treated with medication. A change in food, area, soap, spray and cause this. Its a bacteria that they normally have on their skin that gets inflamed and infected (sort of like hives for a person)

Why do Wheaton rescues say they must be only dog and no kids. My girl raised with a maltipoo and 4 growing girls. Don't get it. Loved my girl.

Probably because it’s a rescue and you never know what happened to them when they were with their previous owners. Maybe kids mistreated them.
