Thanks Graham and James for the comprehensive analysis. One question for both of you- If Unai Emery is such a master tactician, how was Arsenal so poor under him in his 2nd season? Poor teams such as Southampton would have 20 shots against us at the Emirates under his stewardship. Why did it not work for him at Arsenal?

Good to have you both back doing a great breakdown. My simplistic view is pretty straightforward - whether we get a new striker or not, our existing attacking players all need to be better at converting their chances. If we do that, then we win that game and indeed most of the tight games that get nervey as they progress without us scoring
Graham gives a balanced opinion. This tactical insight may prove to be the most important and I hope some of the coaching staff have watched this.

I have no problem losing a game as an Arsenal fan. What worries me and continues to worry me is the manner of the losses, our transitional play is slow and lethargic and we struggle against higher quality opposition to create chances and convert them. We lack that switch-up to be more direct and shift from a controlling, possession side to a more direct attacking approach mid-game.

My takeaway from the tactical discussion is the team losing its structure in the conceding both goals, the 1st one Zinchenko typically caught in no man's when his first concern should be Bailey, then in the 2nd the fact that Smith Rowe says it all about who should have been on Watkins. Losing structure implies some degree of panick most likely introduced by Villa dominating the midfield in 2nd half and Arteta'a failure to address it.

Yes Arsenal had a 35 minute period at the beginning of the first half where they were clearly better than Villa,but again just like when Villa beat them at Villa park earlier this season,they didn't convert their chances into goals & goals win games not stats. Villa rode their luck abit in the 1st half,but defended really well, especially Diago Carlos. In the 2nd half it was all Villa & Unai's tactical tweek at half time certainly hit the spot,Arsenal couldn't seem to get to grips with how Villa were playing & Villa got a well deserved win leaving what was left of the Arsenal support stunned/silent. Villa are on the up & Arsenal underestimated us & got a nasty surprise by getting well beaten. 😂 Unai Emery is world class & picked apart Arteta's game plan & reacts in game to stop Arsenal playing their game....... up the mighty Villa!!!! 😊

They also pressed us better. A momentum change happened when we playing at back and lose pass inside our box panicked us ended up in our corner and lost ball after that we never got back in it. First part second half was 50-50. I hoped we would come back but went other way. Shout at tv to do something but when finally did it didn't work
Martinelli scanned bailey 3 times , saw him waiting for a switch & didn't drop to mark him. So there, his work rate must be in question, since he is a substitute.
If Arteta and Arsenal want to win at Bayern, he should go exactly with the team that played against Brighton couple of weeks ago with Gabriel Jesus on the left and Kai Harvart upfront. Martineli and Trossard should be a super sub.
I think the divide in our fanbase is down to age. The older ones like me who have seen us being so successful where finishing 2nd was failure are frustrated with us not getting over the line. But anyone under 25 would hardly remember us winning a league. Thats why they're so pro arteta as this is the best they've ever seen. You can't blame them for that. I just hope they can feel the happines when arsenal were truly a force.and managed to get over the line when it mattered and not just flat track bullies.

The interesting and irony is that, James and other AFTV have been calling for Jesus to start up front saying he gives us something special. They want Jesus to start against Brighton but won anyway with Kai. U wud think home game against Villa shud be good but here we are.
The fact is, Kai played along side Rice with Trossard up front during those 10 games winning run...the different is smooth interchange between Trossard and Kai.
Odegaard by far our most important player. We needca plan when not available or needs a break

In our analysis , James & I look at the changes Arteta made and how the structure changed .
We ask did he make the right decision to move Havertz back into midfield to accomodate Jesus at CF , which meant moving Rice back to 6 & resting Jorginho ?
First half looked like he had made the right call. The team pushed Villa back and dominated the game . But a lack of composure infront of goal meant it was all square at half time .
We look at the reasons why things changed 2nd half and analyse why Arsenal lost control
And ask : did Arteta react quick enough with his substitutions .

I think he struggled with the players he had to build the right culture at the club and to play the way he likes to play.
He had a very unbalanced squad .

Jorge has to play even if its for 70 minutes. Graham got it spot on with Arteta picking the wrong side and we got tired as a consequence and we can't carry players who are injured, carrying injuries, martinelli, saka and Jesus. We also need to go back to Kiwior. Zinchenko is OK to bring on when the game is over.
I couldn't see why Jorginho and Partey couldn't have managed the minutes as the 6 & Rice played his hybrid 6/8 role , leaving Havertz up top.
@@Graham_Brooks1 couldn't agree more, Tommy should have come on for Zinny and at start of the season he had Partey playing at right back? He can't go gung ho against Bayern, we have to sit and play counter attack as we did against City. May have to play for pens. If we beat Bayern we may have to play City twice more and that will test both squads for the run in. I said 87 points or more will win it as two of the three won't make 87. Teams drop points when Europe starts. There are no easy games when you get leggy playing 2 games a week, and City are in the FA cup as well.

It's great in hindsight. Yes there was mistakes from arteta and also in game play from players ...they are human.but top players have to perform the best in 38 games so everyone is tired it's not a excuse
I just reviewed the match stats because I noticed we dropped in making chances.
-It turned out that that drop started from the 64th minute.
-Also Odegaard was leading in passes to the final/attacking third(at least before he was subbed off 5 minutes before Villa's 1st Goal).
-In fact with him included, 5 of all the players that were leading in final 3rd passes in that match were on the Arsenal side. But between the 64th minute and Villa's 2nd goal(87th minute) that wasn't the case anymore.
-Martinelli(who came on in the 67th) didn't lead in that until the period from the time AFTER the last Villa goal. So knowing the we started lacking in chances and Martinelli came on just 3 minutes after that he should have had more passes to at least make that sub worth it.
-Overall we were leading in passes in both attacking & mid thirds in the game, but within the period between that 64th minute and the last goal alone, it was all Villa.
-Before that 64th minute we had better tackles but after that, it was all Villa. Throughout the match Villa led in interceptions and blocks, all within their defensive 3rd. In fact they literally blocked over half of our shots.
Villa played with a low block 4 4 2. We played with a third man running to beat the offside Z came inside H was making the runs. The second H villa dropped deeper no room for O to operate.
Against Bayern I think Arteta needs to pick either Havertz or Jesus and Trossard needs to start on the left, if he doesn't want to start Partey or Jorginho then play ESR, then put Tomiyasu at left back. Sane will tear Zinchenko apart but Tomiyasu will bully him.
I have felt for a while that I think Arteta sees a future where Ødegaard is a deep lying playmaker and Ethan Nwaneri and ESR are the advanced midfielders, the role Ødegaard played last season. Havertz will be made the permanent striker with Martinelli and Saka being the 15-20 goal a season players, Tomiyasu at left back and Timber switching between the two fullback positions.
Trossard on the BENCH 😮 to make impact second half. He's not as a starter🤔😦☹️

Villa used a mid block in the second half. Martinez the goal keeper became a 3rd ball playing defender and overload us 11 to 10 and broke our press.
Shoehorning Jesus back into the team has had the same effect as last season.

Nerves kicked in since Porto away. Big Gabby loses it under pressure at times. Zinchenko next to him I think makes him worse as Taveres did. Rice got out his lane and making defensive mistakes. Martinelli looks hopelessly off it since injury etc etc.we were ine point ahead 7 to go last season. Looking familiar. We need to go and turn thst rou d at Byern

I still think we're trying to shoehorn havertz into the team. We must get isak and a proper box to box next season. It's a must.
I think Arteta simply took a gamble on red and it came up black. Nearly all of the indicators were in our favour such as already having proven we could out play them along with a good home record against Villa and their best midfielder in Douglas Luis being suspended.
The option to slide Havertz back into midfield came across as governed by believing Jesus would at the very least reproduce something of his mid week efforts against Bayern Munich and hopefully even better to warrant a start, and rather than bench Havertz in the up front swap, play him in midfield again but now with his confidence up and more acclimatised to the team style of play.
Not to mention that a good performance there from the big German would've been like a redemption of his early season alchemy and permit him a a well earned 'i told you so'.
There were several chances for short counterattacks, but why couldn't they attack more simply? While WG had the ball for too long, Villa's defenders quickly returned and their block was too tight to break through.
They had the skills to pass with one touch or break through with dribbling, so I think they should have attacked more simply and directly like other teams.
I am not attacking them as I would freeze with 1000 watching me on a Sunday . Butvwe need to address we freeze at swueaky bum time. Some proper input needed for team and Arteta. 1 point ahead 7 to go last seas. Same this

Different season, same Arteta overthinking it when it matters and throwing it away. Love the boss but this has happened every single time. 2022, top4 miss, 23’, title miss, 24’ looking like the same pattern.
Havertz cannot dictate tempo, he's not a midfielder by his trade.
We gave the ball away so much. It's was amatuer. Rice failed every final ball. We isolated trossard, and was shocking
I keep hearing the term "high line" being used in this tactical analysis of Aston Villa which is incorrect. Aston Villa actually deployed a Mid Block tactic if you analyse where they actually played their defensive line throughout the match. The exact same as Porto which seems to nullify Arsenal every single time.
We need to sell Zinchenko and Jesus in the summer. We need a prolific striker and a proper defensive midfielder to let Rice roam more into the box.
I always enjoy this content...from my personal standpoint, not worth listening to the like of Troopz or Curtis....far too accusatory and over emotional.... that's their perogative but in victory we should always stay humble and in defeat be accepting and understand our failing but it is about how we bounce back, 2 points is not insurmountable....it ain't over until it is over !!!!!

Zinchenko lacks a little bit of strength and aggression when defending . I want him to body those fast wingers (Don't give them a chance to progress, just stop their play(tackle,body,push them) if they decide to counter us. Jesus was so slow, he needs to get to speed to match saka,haverts,odegaard and trossards speed of play.

I just don’t understand the sense in leaving Saka on and taking odegaard off. Odegaard was the only player breaking the lines, saka hardly had a dribble or a chance created.
I love saka don’t get me wrong but he doesn’t have the vision or the cutthroat direct play to unlock a defence.

Why not substitute Partey and Tomi on for Jesus and Zinny for the second half? Arteta’s poor decisions cost him.
i dont think the so called "dominance" was that. We were not fluent as we have been and often Villa looked comfortable as we went sideways or Zinchenko kept the ball on the centre circle for 10 mins ! That's not 'dominance'. Arteta's desperation to keep getting Jesus back into the team unfit or Havertz even if he has to play in midfield where he's nowhere near as effective as up top is utter stupidity. It's what cost us the title last season bringing back Jesus when Trossard was flying and I knew he'd do it again. He has. Dominance is actually what Villa did in the 2nds half - we were chasing shadows two steps behind their quick accurate short passing and release to the forward Watkins who gave us all sort sof problems.
We were playing well without Zinchenko hugging the ball , slowing our attack, making us predictable and easy to defend against us. Plus his lack of defensive awareness costing us goals. Havertz excelled for as in the 9 bringing back into midfield to only clutter our fluidity in midfield . Trossard only works as a sub never performed well as a starter . Jesus had an awful time against the physicality of Diego Carlos
ARSENAL are suffering from their usual VIRTUAL SIGNAL PRESSURE SYNDROME. The manager has a problem of psychological maturity to pressure management when the heat burns. When it matters most, Arsenal wouygo from confidence and moster winning mentality to crumbling in their shell.

With all due respect, and I really do mean all due respect, this is one of the times where it feels like Graham and James didn't watch the game.
1. Let's talk Zinchenko. Apart from what appears to be a media narrative around his defensive frailties, what has he done since he returned from injury that shows him to be defensively weak? Kiwior just happened to play through a period where we weren't giving away anything stupid but I'd count about twice a game that he'd get turned inside out by a winger. You rarely see wingers wash zinny (whoever rebuts will probably give me trent last season which probably proves my point) and yet we'll claim he can't defend. It's honestly giving early Granit Xhaka vibes where as long as he was in the frame when a goal was conceded, we blame him
2. Martin Odegaard had a good first half. True but it's become all to obvious that the solution to him is to crowd the middle. Porto, Fulham, City, Westham. These are all teams that make him look ineffective and they use one tactic. reduce the distance between their striking line and their defense. Odegaard is an excellent short passer but you'll rarely see him hit a 40 yard pass to free up an onrushing leftback. If there's no space for him to play a nifty 1-2 with his number 9, he becomes near toothless. That's all Unai did. The aston villa backline stepped up and refused to retreat every time we had the ball. We only had one long ball threat who was Zinchenko and for some incomprehensible reason, we only had one runner who was Kai. Once that channel was cut off, we ran out of ideas.
3.Personally, I thought we should have brought on Martinelli for Trossard and moved Him into the middle with Kai to make a 4-4-2. We could then have kept getting Zinny to either hit Havertz and look for a knock down to Martinelli or Zip it into Jesus to take on his fullback 1v1.
4. Graham, the improved defensive solidity of Tomi wouldn't have improved anything at LB. We didn't have any villa winger run at us and create chances down that side. Matter of fact, they were doing it on the other side and if memory serves, Tomi was on when that happened.

People are considering only the phase of play when the cross comes in ignoring the fact that the preceding phase of play was an Aston villa corner that one of Zinny or Tomi headed out. It's that very header that villa recollect and initiate a secondary attack. There literally would have been no time for players to reorient their positions. Zinny is not the only that isn't in his on paper "position". It's just the logic of having your least dominant players at the front post and most dominant at the back post during a corner.

I don't think Zinny is weak in the duels . Infact only Psrtey in the current squad wins more duels .
You rightly point to the strength of his game and you were right, he was the one making the progressive passes into the final third when we were on top in the first half . And he played Havertz through .
Only Odegaard and Jorginho pass more balls per 90 into the final third .
My problem with him is he is & was on Sunday sloppy in possession & his positioning at times . He played Villa on a couple of times not coming out and was out of position when they scored .
And he gave away the ball on the edge of our box with his overconfidence dribbling out.

You slightly misunderstood my point about Zinny being forced to defend . I was making the point Villa would rather he was defending at left back than building our play . I did think Diaby and Bailey looked dangerous when they stretched the pitch and they held the width .
We have protected Kiwior quite well , so maybe the reason second half our defence looked more unbalanced and chaotic , was more a team issue than a player issue
But it felt like off the ball this was last season's Arsenal.
On Odegaard , everything went through him first half . It was the perfect playmaking performance . Short passes , stretching the play. He came deep to build & he changed sides to combine with Havertz & Trossard.
I get the point about Villa squeezing the middle and being compact . But his quick feet and scooped passes nearly got us in . And he had the vision to release Saka in behind , which he couldn't capitalise on

@@Graham_Brooks1 @Graham_Brooks1 great to hear back from you. I guess I slightly overcompensate when I feel a player is being unjustly blamed. You're right about Zinny's sloppiness on the ball. At times he does put us in trouble when he's on the ball. However, you could also consider that Diaby and Bailey looked dangerous to you because you simply expected them to go past him. Looking at the reality of what happened, Except for Bailey scoring, not much was done down the right.
I still hold fast that on paper, the ball was scored down what would have been Zinchenko's side, but we can't fully put that on him because of the situation in which the ball was crossed. Watch again. It's a corner kick. He and Tomi had cleared some in the same Zone earlier (Means he is instructed to be there earlier for set pieces). Right off the clearance, Villa gather and reinitiate the attack. While it is right that there was no immediate danger to the Zone he was covering, would it have been responsible of him to immediately disengage, take his eyes off the ball and sprint to the back post?
2. Would that not have caused more commotion requiring Jorginho to now drop in and cover that "cutback lane", Rice to step up from the back stick to the front of the box?
3. Isn't it just better that in a scenario like that, everyone simply holds their Zone until the danger passes so they can reset?
4. If this corner were on the other side, Tomi would have been the one "out of position". Do you think he'd have received as much calling out? I don't.
Finally "we have protected Kiwior well" nothing has been truer. For Kiwior to be solid, he needs a lot of protection. He needs people around him to cover when he looses his duels because he does loose a lot (2 a game on average). Zinny on the other hand tends to require as much protection. I tend to say, there's not a lot of difference in playing Zinny and Kiwior defensively, but as a combined effect on the team, Zinny is better.
