@svenm sandity i was saying if you build the cable out of teflon for the moons space elevator this doesnt really prove that the cable made out of diamond nano fibers for earths space elevator will work. You should use the same material for both. What do you think?
“Maybe we will never build a space elevator, but in trying to do so, we might learn an awful lot. And when it comes to the exploration of the universe, there can’t be too many dreams of a glorious future.” Beautiful
What we would learn is what we should have learned before starting in engineering 101: building a space elevator is far beyond any realism in terms of materials needed, costs, risks, energy and more. This will not happen. Period.

You know what really annoys me, our short lifespan. I want to see where the human race goes. i wanna have a vacation on the Moon. But I'm already half way through my lifespan. That really pisses me off.
There is maybe hope for us. One way could be genetics. Modifying our DNA to eliminate or reverse the effects of aging. Kurzgesagt made a video about this. Or transcending to an virtual life form. Upload your mind into a computer. Or both. Who knows what time will bring. Humans making huge progress in those technologies.
Ascender2306 To do that, we would have to eliminate cancer and genetic diseases first. You see, aging is caused by a shortage in supply of telomeres - the genetic material that forms the "caps" of our cromossomes. Resupplying them requires the development of enzymes that replenish the genetic material - at the cost of increasing mutation chances by a ridiculous amount. So, while we do produce small quantities of those enzymes, it is only enough to make us age comparatively slowly compared to many other animals, but still insignificant to stop the aging factor. Scientists discovered that the peak of human developed is reached when we hit 3 decades of life; that means that the reason why people don't remain 30 years old is that it would be very bad for our health. Fortunately, at the rate that technology is advancing, it will be possible to afford a method to stop aging within a few decades. That thing about uploading our minds into virtual realities has one obstacle: do you really transfer your mind, or are you simply making a copy of your personality? The game Soma dealt with that issue, as technology there basically works by uploading your personality to a computer, creating sophisticated systems of security. However, they do not really transfer minds, only copy them. That is why it would be preferable to simply perfect genetic engineering.
CanterlotCrusader Mind uploading is not that simple. The most likely result is creating a human based off of your personality. If there is such a thing as a mind transference, then we do not know how to do it yet.
Chris Ward The thing is though, if we had lifetimes that long, we would slowly grow to do nothing. If you knew you had a few weeks to live, you would try to make the most of it. But if you had 100s you would not be as connected to others and would develop a "There's time to do it later" attitude and ultimately IN MY OPINION the human race would be worse off
I heard that Earth is absolutely stunning to look at in space. No astronauts can describe it well enough, but they can all agree that it looks something out of this world (no puns intended). Man, I wish one day I can see the beauty of the world from afar.
That all depends on how old you are. If your young enough, you might end up receiving medical treatment that would slow down or halt your aging. Then its possible you'll see widespread use (perhaps not commercially for a while) of orbital mass drivers. An orbital mass driver is basically a really big railgun designed to fire a ship up into atmosphere as far as possible using electromagnets. It's a slim chance, but it's all we've got.
+Short Fuze "That all depends on how old you are. If your young enough, you might end up receiving medical treatment that would slow down or halt your aging." Are you familiar with Kim Stanley Robinson's Red/Green/Blue Mars trilogy and the Honor Harrington Novels by David Weber? Both have medical procedures that can prolong human lifespans if applied early enough... which leads to families having several generations that received different degrees of prolong... parents or grandparents aging vastly faster than their offspring or dying without having received any benefit of the new procedure whatsoever... In addition both have planets or regions of the world that are too poor for even the most basic forms of prolong, which in worst case for our current world setup would encompass about 3/5s of the population globally... Which might be a blessing in disguise for all its negative moral connotations, seeing as those are also the ones that have higher procreation rates and therefore would enlarge the overall population even more if they had longer to do so. These aspects of the idea are certainly not the most inspiring or uplifting thoughts you could come up with, even if over the long term it could turn out to be a good thing for humans... for humanity and our environment it would not be so good at least at first.

+RomanVman well if the elevator caught on fire, it would have to be the ground, as no air in space, and I really doubt we would use a material that can be set on fire without oxygen, so stay at the top, where you will probably have little happen beyond a changed orbit. the top may eventually fall, but I think we would have a contingency for that.

how to space step by step guide 1 build space elevator 2 invent ftl 3 ??? 4 Subjugate any alien races and exterminate those who oppose us 5 BECOME GALACTIC EMPIRE 6 profit
A moon space elevator sounds like an awesome idea! And you could use it for both launching and 'landing' since a landing would technically just be a rendezvous with the station like we've already mastered with the ISS. One way to kickstart a moon colony. Let's do it :P
I’ve heard a solution would be to use an orbital ring as the counterweight, which has a ring encircling the planet that spins to provide the outward force to keep the tether in tension, this would let us get by with a much shorter tether, eliminate a danger of the tether snapping, and can use the entire outside of the ring as an orbital sling too. And you can put all kinds of stuff on the massive surface area. Best of three worlds.
One issue that remains is security. I propose we have two giant drone carrying up to one hundred drones each, covering a very large area. I can assure you that nothing will go wrong with this.
It wasn't the technology problems that make it seemed like a crazy idea. It's the fact that throwing something like a car is stupid when you can launch things like satellites of the same weight with more functionality into space, for how unproductive it is.
actually with the centrifugal force and artificial gravity if they develop a large area you will need transportation. BUT the whole your car costing 40 mill to send was just showing you the price differences like saying it would cost 500 mill to send a locomotive train, NOT necessarily will happen not even feasible or useful just showing the price like a purse made out of solid gold. take it for what it is

+KhongtheFork WithaKnife NoSpoon This is a good joke and, at the same time, a sad truth. Whenever we're going to build something in the future we'll have to ask ourselves "Can we take the risk of it getting blown up by bloody blinded blockheads"?
You forgot the most obvious advantage. You can put solar panels at the counterweight end and use it to generate virtually unlimited energy that can then be transmitted to Earth and power the space elevator.
You would still need a huge amount of solar panels, all reinforced so they can whitstand the centrifugal force. Covering the Sahara might be a better idea.
Sander Datema Once you already figured out the problem of creating a tether that can withstand the centrifugal force, putting a vast solar array in outer space is a trivial matter in comparison. Especially if they are using graphene solar arrays which are far more efficient, and stronger than current solar panels.
Sander Datema No, you're missing the entire point. If you're going to build an orbital elevator, you're investing a ton of money into the elevator already. The cost of the solar array is trivial in comparison to that. If you have an elevator you might as well use it to transmit energy since they would synergize well. The solar array in space would not be obstructed by atmospheric phenomena which greatly reduces the amount of energy they would receive if they were on the ground.
You don´t need a space elevator for that. If you want to put solar panals in space, you can do it without a space elevator (not that it will be cost effective anytime soon). Plus it would be much much better to have many smaller solar panal arrays in orbit than one massive one.
4:45 I wouldn't get this at the time of upload, but having recently got into star wars because of it's music, I heard Yoda's theme. My god I can't believe it's been almost 5 years and this video still had more to offer to me.

Then probably as soon as you complete and begin using those may as well set plans in place too build 2 way bigger ones with the technology jump and again after what that is doing is giving global focus and if that is our collective program we will maximize our time and create more in the process.
absolutely. this isn't a giant office building with a few hundred people in it. this is a giant cord that will snap around the earth and blaze a trail of destruction where it lands. not to mention it costs billions upon billions of dollars to build that thing. plus, i think any hijacked civil plane that is going to be used as a weapon of terrorism should be shot down. whole different discussion tho
RyGuyMemes DEFINITLY, what do you think is better? Sacrifice 300 to 400 people to save billions or let the crazy cunts smash into the station and not only kill those people but also risk killing billions more after the trail of distruction that will cause?

If the elevator caught on fire, and I was at the top, would I take the stairs?
+RomanVman well if the elevator caught on fire, it would have to be the ground, as no air in space, and I really doubt we would use a material that can be set on fire without oxygen, so stay at the top, where you will probably have little happen beyond a changed orbit. the top may eventually fall, but I think we would have a contingency for that.
lol
+speedy01247 you completely missed the joke
+speedy01247 I think that the counter weight would fly off into space though?
+Cube Destroyer It would still be in orbit, though, so whatever mechanism they use to maintain that orbit could be used to keep it from going too far off orbit.

Being in the elevator would be cool. Imagine staying in a hotel room for a couple days where the gravity slowly gets lower and lower, until you’re eventually floating around the room
there would still be gravity because the elevator isnt orbiting (unless you get to geostationary)

A moon space elevator sounds like an awesome idea! And you could use it for both launching and 'landing' since a landing would technically just be a rendezvous with the station like we've already mastered with the ISS. One way to kickstart a moon colony. Let's do it :P

3:45 - Team Fortress stored critical hit sound in the background.
Here is some more videos, if you NEED TO PROCRASTINATE more. Thanks, Kurzgesagt!

I agree that trying a space elevator on the moon might be a better first step. This is a rather interesting video! =)
Yes and it takes the atmosphere out of the equation. That seems like an excellent application, which might well begin by lowering a pilot anchor.
4:26 I just realized there's an Ichthyosaur on the left. I miss those guys
This was a little less depressing :)
Putting a car in to space seemed crazy 2 years ago, still does, but it has happened.
It wasn't the technology problems that make it seemed like a crazy idea.
It's the fact that throwing something like a car is stupid when you can launch things like satellites of the same weight with more functionality into space, for how unproductive it is.
It’s still crazy. We just have people crazy enough to do it now.
We have Elon to thank for that

@@brendanpospischil3871 Yeah, technically, but it's not "your car" for anybody, it's a property of NASA
actually with the centrifugal force and artificial gravity if they develop a large area you will need transportation. +KhongtheFork WithaKnife NoSpoon This is a good joke and, at the same time, a sad truth. Whenever we're going to build something in the future we'll have to ask ourselves "Can we take the risk of it getting blown up by bloody blinded blockheads"?
Well said, friend.
+KhongtheFork WithaKnife NoSpoon ISIS? You mean ISS?
Kevin J It's a joke CAROL!
It would still be a lot cheaper to just put them on the ground.
I will be amazed if this will be built during my lifetime. The Technology progres is getting faster and faster and people live longer so this can be possible.

Then probably as soon as you complete and begin using those may as well set plans in place too build 2 way bigger ones with the technology jump and again after what that is doing is giving global focus and if that is our collective program we will maximize our time and create more in the process.
Even if you build it some nutter with some tnt will come and ruin it...

Ted Coombs Plus a heavy rail gun lazer to take care of dickheads in the air.
But what if they hijack a commercial flight again? Do we shoot it down?
absolutely. this isn't a giant office building with a few hundred people in it. this is a giant cord that will snap around the earth and blaze a trail of destruction where it lands. not to mention it costs billions upon billions of dollars to build that thing.
plus, i think any hijacked civil plane that is going to be used as a weapon of terrorism should be shot down. whole different discussion tho
RyGuyMemes DEFINITLY, what do you think is better? Sacrifice 300 to 400 people to save billions or let the crazy cunts smash into the station and not only kill those people but also risk killing billions more after the trail of distruction that will cause?
I have to say that I love your videos!
