I grew up in Hamilton Township had an Uncle that lived directly behind the track on a back street we used to watch the races from his roof in the late 1970s
Sad to say that the Thompson wreck happened right in front of me. I was standing at the crossover gate coming off of Turn 4 when the car sailed over the wall. You knew it was not good as soon as the car hit the ground, then bounced, and landed against the catch fence a couple hundred feet away. I'll never forget it.
I was at that event. I never forgot it as Mario was escorted through the grandstand where I was after the race. I had to pat him on the back. That was the closest I came to F1 royalty til 1999 AD when my I was at a wedding reception and met a French woman who had dated Alain Prost.
No, it can be both. I'm a male and my 1st name is Lindsey. Lindsey Hopkins WAS an Indy car owner in 50's thru the early 80's. Also the singer Lindsey Buckingham, with Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey Nelson the late sportscaster. My wife's name is Teresa.
Dang it, I wish I had been into IndyCar when this track was still open! It was less than a half hour from where I grew up. At least we're racing at Pocono again this year! Thanks for posting this one! Pretty decent quality for the age of it!
@59:37 Best career finish for Johnny Parsons in the Hopkins Lightning. He would match that 6 months later when he would run 2nd to AJ Foyt at Ontario in March of 1979. Interesting that he also raced in the 1996 IRL season.
Diego Ruiz, I am and was born a male.Evidently you can comprehend anything out side the box. There was an Indy car owner named Lindsey Hopkins. Would you tell Carroll O'Conner (Archie Bunker) that he has a girls name?????
Very cool. Thanks for up'ing this. A Trenton friend of mine toured me around the area a year ago where the track USED to be. Based on his descriptions, a drive through the neighborhood behind what used to be the back stretch, a few photos, and video like this, I'm able to imagine where the races were once held.
Notice the safety back in these days or lack of it compared to today. No safety barriers and people just behind a guard rail with no catch fence or nothing. How times sure have changed.
What a funky yet awesome track. Wish they had something unique like this today rather than every track being the same.
The Snevas named their sons Tom and Jerry...
Why after all these years did I just now realize that...
The kidney bean :) Such a unique circuit.
Sad to say thompson would die a few days later ...

I was about to ask if that was a residential neighborhood out behind (and right next to) the backstretch. 😮
… but AJ won LeMans with Dan Gurney. ‘End of argument

I was in the grandstand along the front stretch. I remember how loud the engines were over the sound of the PA system, especially the Super Vees.
Sean and I were there hunting autographs.

52:52 lol is that really the best picture they had....
Then they say he's been beaten and battered...lol. it sure looks like it. Or on the tail end of a 3 day bender...lol
@@beeemm2578 Holy moly, a reply to an 11 year old comment. Hello person from the future!

This looks like a fun race to attend. Feels like Indy car racing at Anderson speedway it’s just a local track

What was it about 1970's USAC drivers that they seemed to point their cars toward another car stopped dead or a huge piece of debris on the track?
RIP Tommy Thompson
Big names here that alot have never seen race
Just a race away from the Cart/USAC split that did so much damage to the sport.
interesting that the cars have looked pretty much the same since the late 70s.
I was standing by the track entrance by turn 4. The accident happened right in front of mee
What's that stuff on David Hobb's head? :-D
Good god. Everybody is young.

Do you have this available on a DVD? This is the 1st Indycar race I took my wife to.
What? Lindsey is the name of a girl, right? How can it be your wife?

does any footage exist of the USAC round in Silverstone?
It was broadcast on abc. No footage has materialized so far, and I am a Indy Car video collector.
I don't think so. Highlights of the Brands Hatch race survive, but not Silverstone afaik.
I didn't know there were any kidney shaped ovals apart from Brooklands. I had never heard of this track until now.
