Thank you for humanizing the hunters/trappers and traders and explaining how the trade of wild animals is a complex issue. You show your intelligence and credibility by not presenting info as sensational or black and white. I've always been impressed by how you communicate and educate, and I think you will bring so much favor to the reptile-keeping community.
I love how you make clear that all the trappers and hunters are just nice people who try to make their living, and not those mean people who capture animals in the most cruel way possible to make leather handbags out of these snakes.
I believe most of the snake skins are coming from the Florida everglades python hunters. Fl law requires that the snakes be humanly dispatched, alligator leather probably mostly comes from commercial alligator market.
I live these release videos! I love how y'all buy snakes just to release them back in to the wild. And I love how you humanize the trappers and exporters; just men trying to make a living and support their families on what they have available. Any of us would do the same. I'm looking forward to more videos when you go back in March.
Thanks for explaining the difference between releasing snakes in a resource rich environment as opposed to one where resources are scarce. That makes a lot of sense.
Phenomenal! I got tears in my eyes when Amy released the Emerald and put her hand to her chest. That’s loving what you do and loving these snakes. One day I will do this! Bob, I’m super proud of the growth of your channel. Being one of the first patrons, I’ve watched this channel grow. Deservedly so. 🐍❤️🐍
This series is great! Not just what you're doing, but putting faces to the folks involved in the wild caught trade. It's so easy to demonize people you've never seen, let alone met. Putting a face and context into these stories really helps understand the full picture!
You're doing marvellous work. I adore arboreal snakes, emerald tree boas top my list: I actually had one back in the early 1970s, and when I stopped keeping snakes, I donated the animal to London Zoo. Started keeping again a few years ago, but no emerald now - they're vastly expensive.
I don't even have a python (I have a Dumerils Boa and a Hognose Snake though), I subscribed to learn more about ball pythons for my girlfriend who owns one (don't worry, the snake is fine!) but I really came to love this channel in the last few weeks! And seeing content like this is just a whole different level of awesome! Thanks so much for your videos and the time and effort you put into them!!
So many great videos from your visit to the amazon! I gotta say your conversations with the locals and trappers and people you are dealing with are very interesting and eye opening to others ways of life. I was fortunate to be able to see alot of walks of life while I was in the deployed in the Marines, but to see a non military view of other walks of life is very welcomed. Its was funny to see that guys reaction to you buying their snakes just to release them back in the wild, hahaha. Thanks for sharing your awesome trip with us!
Hi Bob. Here's a good question. My exo terra Terrarium 60x45x45 is arriving soon with the heat emitter, inkbird thermostats etc. The breeder I got my ball python of just said it's the worst move I could make, they're not designed for snakes, don't hold the temperature properly and cause respiratory infections etc and nobody that breeds snakes would use one? I've just spent $£400 heeeelllp lol My new ball is an albino pied 😁
It might be a bit big for a baby but it'll be just fine for an adult. Snake keepers should not be keeping their snakes like breeders do. Sometimes breeders don't have a frame of reference for how to keep snakes other than the way they do it. Check out my ball python care guide and that should help you out
This channel does such great work. I can't wait til I get out of grad school this spring and hopefully have a little disposable income so I can start supporting projects like this. PS, a few times when the epic music started I definitely thought it was indicating danger. lol. Then my brain reminded me I was not in fact watching an action movie. The score in here was fabulous.
To really interrupt the trade, you'd have to find another way for the hunters who catch them to make a living. Possibly pay them to refrain from hunting for export, or paying them to do something like documenting the species' they'd hunt instead. Supply them with trail cameras to maintain, for example. Or perhaps cultivating species that have become threatened to release? They're not getting rich doing what they're doing. Pay them slightly better than what they're getting now for something that helps their environment and I'd bet they'd be glad to change. But a change like that would take a concerted effort by a sizeable group to fund and organize.
Also, those Emeralds. They are amazing. I may never be able to keep them personally, but watching these adventures let me feel close to them and honestly, I am full of wonder and awe for them.
I absolutely love watching this!! its a dream of mine to do this one day just gotta wait till my crotch goblins grow up😂 thanks for the great video Bob!!! Always great content 🎉🎉
@@GreenRoomPythons sorry for the misunderstanding, I was asking about the amazon tree boas which are not green, I've never seen them before. I France, we cannot get the Caninus as all snakes endemic to France are protected. Caninus are present in French Guyana therefore we can get the batesii or maybe those orange / brown one displayed in your video if not present in French Guyana.
@@harolddemaine oh, those are just called Amazon tree boas. They are much smaller and thinner than the emeralds. In Suriname they call them Cooks boas but here they're just Amazon tree boas.
i like the patreon scroll just bc i want to be in the hoard of keepers if i could afford it, and i wanna hear what you have to say about the patreon and plans
I hope all these animals get to spend the rest of their lives where they belong. Especially the Emeralds. 90-95% of the imported emerald tree boas do not make in captivity. They are a difficult species to keep and with the parasites and the travel/conditions to make it to where they are being sold they do not fair well.
I appreciate your effort, but the native/local snake hunters can go anywhere you go, plus they have internet. When growing up hunting small game it made more sense, and less time to go remote to find the game, same for fishing. When I lived in the Keys we used flat boats to go where most boats could not go and fished the shallows in and around the mangroves. Want to help make it difficult to sell wild caught? Breed more affordable captive bred babies. Highlight on the affordable. This has already happened with ball pythons, as you know. Why would anyone pay 25 dollars for a wild ball python with parasites when a captive bred can be bought for 50 dollars. Same for parakeets, nobody is buying wild caught parakeets.
I appreciate your thoughts on this but that is not something that would have gone over our heads ;-) The fact is that these trappers and hunters stay in one general area because they don't need to go any farther. There are plenty of animals within the range that they hunt and trap. They're also not specifically looking for snakes - they make more money on other animals. I actually mentioned this in the video But I realize many people comment without watching the video. I'm very confident that we found safe spots to relocate these snakes.
Breeders have to be able to make money as wel, and a lot of that happens with pricier animals. Obviously many love to just get snakes out there, but a breeding business isn't going to stay afloat selling all 50 dollar snakes. (I know it was just a price example and there is a wider cheap range than that.) And I'm not a breeder, I have no skin in this game. lol

Yes they are!
The Hoard is growing, it can't be stopped! Thanks for taking us on your adventure. Super cool!
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it's becoming quite a hoard!
Well done Bob & Amy! Nice new homes for those beauties and interesting interview. Dad & I enjoyed it again this week. Thanks
Thanks Mom, I'm glad you both liked it!
it's really charming that you make handwritten signs!! intrigued to see what you do next with the hoard
it's also great how you showed the trappers/hunters/middlemen as very nice people (who are just making a living), it really humanizes them

I just love wild snakes... I can own all the captive bred species in the world, and nothing will compare to their wild counterpart. Just amazing!
I agree, it's amazing to find them in their natural habitat
