- Tips for changing the front spring and shock absorber on a Mercedes E Class W211. (Sorry for the shaking - the stability control in my camera had gone and I did not notice). This is not a step by step as there are over videos, however, this is more tips that the others did not cover.

Nice video, I just replaced my front shocks and springs on my S211 spot with napa ( monroe ) . Where did you get the spring compressor? looks like a nice bit of kit

Not sure if the link will work .. but it is a fab spring compression set.. even easier to use if you have a good vice to clamp it in.
How do you adjust the high on the new ones? My new ones are way to high in the front. Do you know the proper measurement of the shock?
Hi,
The ride height depends on the model, but I don't know what they are. I set mine by putting the old one next to the new one and adjusting the ring. I tried to show this in my video around 3mins in but as I had already fitted the new one I could not show the adjusting ring that sits behind the lower spring mount on the shock. By default my new shock was in the highest position and I needed to set it to the lowest. I suspect this is you problem.. ie your new shocks were fitted in the default "high" position.
The problem you may have is that once fitted and the weight of the car put on them, the spring mounting bracket on the shock seems to "lock" in place. I'm not sure if you can adjust after it been fitted.. (The ones I fitted you could not). Only thing I can suggest is to take them off, remove the spring again and see if you can move the spring mount bracket up on the shock to see of you can access the adjusting ring that sits behind it.
Have a look at the first 1min of this video.. it may help you.. he shows how the hight on the shock can be aducsted by moving the ring that the sping bracket sits on..

Hi - its a subjective topic. I put some KYB's on the back of mine but found the ride far too hard and changed them to Monroe's within 2 weeks. The ride is so much better. On the front I put Sachs and I find they are giving a really nice ride. So for me.. Monroe on the back and Sach on the front

Humm.. that's a subjective one.
The ride hight will be different so the loading in the front springs and rest of suspension may not be correct. Also, the geometry of the whole car may have changed so the back will also be impacted. Depending on the new ride hight the stability of the whole car could be compromised making it unsafe. Also, you may find the whole cars suspension will wear out quicker.
There could be insurance issues as well should you have a crash.
But.. really depends on the new ride hight.
For me.. its not worth the risk. The cars are engineered to a specific set up and to change just part of the set up could have unforeseen consequences on the rest of the system. Professional lowering/raising kits where all corners and components are really the best way forward if you are looking to change ride hight.

Easier to unscrew three bolts from upper control arm and separate knuckle from the top.
Good point. I used the ball spliter as I had one.
@@Alan.BigAl. Much easier just to wiggle the control arm down, put the shock fork on it, towards the back of the car, twist the shock using a screw driver through the fork and wiggle again and the shock is out. It is that easy!
or just loosen the nut a little so it still has tension then smack the upper with a hammer a few times we took four hours trying to figure it a on top of me paying someone (right) he had to go to work i watched a five minute video and took it off

Really good shout.. this is why post so that ideas can be shared. Thanks. Tools seem to becoming easier to find and range expanding so always nice to hear of alternatives.
Gearwrench are not easily available here in the UK but there are other bands of pass through sockets are now on Amazon/ebay etc.
I recently got a set of "difficult access' sockets that would have saved me cutting into my deep socket that are a bit cheaper but the pass thought look like a sound investment.
