Hasbro HeroQuest Update & First Look at Pre-production Painted Dwarf Hero Miniature & Combat Dice

- Always Board Never Boring is very excited to have received some free products from @hasbroOfficial for the new edition of HeroQuest, which is currently crowdfunding on the Hasbro Pulse HasLab website. In this video we take a look at a preproduction painted dwarf hero, some combat dice, and a cool dice box.
Please note that while the promotional dwarf figure is prepainted, miniatures in the new HeroQuest game are not painted. They do, however, come cast in coloured plastic.

I was really happy to get it. I'm nowhere near the big leagues, but I got to feel like it for a few minutes when I opened this package this morning. I'll take that.
I think the updated Heroquest is a pretty cool idea. If it had ties to GW along with support and rules in White Dwarf, like the old days, I think that would trigger my nostalgia enough to buy in.

Yeah, I think it's great that it's coming back. It can certainly be a lot of effort (and money) tracking down the originals, if you aren't patient and more than a little bit lucky.
And now that it’s out, we can compare your dice to those from the finished product. The finished dice are square, with less detail. There are several faces on them where they didn’t get enough paint, especially on the white shield faces. But overall, it’s decent quality, and I feel I got my money’a Worth.
I too, was tempted, into investing into this reprint. But at AU$300 + p&h (c. US$220), I am going to stick with the copies I have.
Free stuff is always good! My copy of Wizards of Morcar was a gift from Milton Bradley.
Now that's an excellent gift. I'm not sure how HeroQuest is holding its value in Australia, but in the UK you would be hard pressed to get the base game and two expansions for the £150 asking price, so for those people who don't have a copy its a good deal. I've managed to get all the originals for less than the cost of a Mythic pledge but that was thanks to a good friend and being prepared to fix up a lot of badly damaged stuff.
I was curious myself, and had a little look around. I haven't seen a complete or undamaged set, but even those were between $100 to $500 (!).
I have a (spare) complete set, but the box lid is a little sad, and the dice faces are faded in part.
The prices are going crazy. I thought they might come down a bit because of the crowdfunding campaign, but I think it's just reminded everybody about HeroQuest so now they're hunting down the copy from their childhoods.
I saw some listings, but it could be just be some opportunistic sellers. I doubt anyone would pay $500 for an incomplete copy.

I pledged Mythic. I want a copy of this game, but not for what eBay is asking. I hope we get to the 4 mil goal by tonight, but I think we won't. I wonder how much the Dragon + Quest Book by Manganiello will cost separately, because I'm going to be buying it.
I guess we will have to wait and see what their plans are.
Of course the new dwarf would be taller. Game Workshop did not put legs on dwarves back then. The dragon(from what little we can see from the small picture on the website) looks good and would be a great piece for the game. I don't know if they can reach that stretch goal by the end of the next seven days. Unless they plan to keep it open for the chance to reach it.
They do have previous for extending deadlines (one of the joys of using HasLab - they have complete control). Also, I have to believe they have something up their sleeve to list stretch goals up to 4 million. We shall see!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I notice a lot of people complained that this was on Hasbro Pulse and not Kickstarter. They say "Oh they don't want to pay the fees to Kickstarter because they are greedy but they would have made more through them since more people know about it". However, they made their fist million in one day. They are almost at 3 million so I think things are going well especially when they opened up for order in Europe and I think Australia. So what if it's not Kickstarter, it still works. And if they get it retail, all the better.
@@blackraptor311 I'm not sure if they will go to retail or not with this (hopefully they will share some more information on that soon), but I think the campaign is definitely working for them, especially considering only a limited number of territories can get involved right now.
Good luck with your hero quest restoration, I’m lucky that I’ve got mine still with all the expansions and even though it’s cool a new one is coming I don’t feel the need to fork out for the new one when the old I still play and love. What would be awesome is to have expansions for the old one in the same look to continue the quest.
The HeroQuest restoration is plodding along. I love there's a new edition for those people who don't own the original, or aren't too keen on fixing up a battered copy (or paying through the nose for a good one).
Just under 32 hours remaining, they have reached the 3.2M stretch goal and I'm pleased with how far it has gotten. I am a little sad it isn't close to the 4M stretch goal. I hope that if they don't reach the stretch goal they make the additional content available in another way.
I mentioned in another video today that the Zavvi deadline in the UK is actually a bit sooner. There's just over 2 hours to go for people who want to back through that site, so there may be a bit of a flurry as last minute backers get involved. Still time for it to go a little higher!
So I'm thinking the board has to be bigger as well cuz there's no way that model will fit on the same type of board of the original as I also piece together a original copy and the minis have a hard time fitting on the board as it is LOL
Yes, they have confirmed the board is scaled up to a larger size to fit the miniatures.
Nice to see the designs in real life, the miniature looks pretty good. Not sure how I feel about them being rubberized plastic though, feels like it would lend itself to warping and mushy details. I've not dealt with rubber miniatures myself but that would be my concern. Are they comparable with plastic/resin minis in terms of quality/durability/paintability?
Honestly, I'd be half tempted to cancel my preorder if the minis are going to end up looking like rubbery melted candles.
They're nothing like resin, which is much more fragile. They aren't going to be all floppy and melted; they're just a softer plastic which means you won't get broken weapons and the like. I've painted up plenty of softer miniatures on my channel (pretty much any of my D&D painting guides are with bendy plastic miniatures either from D&D board games, Deep Cuts, or Reaper Bones product lines). This dwarf is actually a pretty solid chunk, and that chunkier design will help. Only the axe has a lot of movement in it, and the detail is very good. You can see in the video that he painted up just fine. If the miniatures are of this quality I don't think it will a problem to paint them nicely.

That message wasnt meant to be overally negative, I was just concerned that I had waited 30 years for this product and I want it to be as good as it reasonably can be. I mainly paint GW miniatures but I guess as long as the quality is similar it doesn't matter. I still think I would prefer solid models if given the option though :P Maybe pass that on to the Hasbro PR people if they solicit you for fan feedback/suggestions.
@@superspecky4eyes Don't worry. It's fine to want to check that sort of thing. It's not a small amount of money we're talking about. I'm just trying to answer any questions as completely as I can (with the limited information I have). Don't go expecting GW levels of detail, but I think you can expect some good looking miniatures. I like hard plastic myself, but I was suitably impressed with this piece (and I don't think Hasbro are going to listen to me).
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah, I was expecting a bit too much if I am being honest. Hasbro is a toy company at the end of the day not a high end hobby company like Games Workshop.
I'm sure Hasbro keep an eye on the general consensus of what people want though, why else would they send out these prototypes to people like yourself.

I would have loved it if they just updated the miniatures to take advantage of new techniques and materials to make the details sharper and richer, but kept close to the original design instead of making it look like everything else that is on Kickstarter these days.

Great stuff. I have the original game which I played to death with my sister 30 years ago (and Kellar´s Keep as well as Return of the Witch Lord). If HASBRO opens up for residents of the EU Member States to join in the Kickstarter, I will be getting it for my two nephews for sure!
I sincerely hope they do. It would be great to give even more people a chance to own it.

Decided to start my heroquest inspired Dungeon Saga mission pack. Posted the modified game rules this morning and will try to get the first mission pdf done this weekend. If anything it is a good way to test some stuff for the next official DS project.

I like how you pre-painted the dwarf. Are you planning on pre-painting all the dwarves for all the sets? Why didn't you show a pre-painted skeleton? Why are your fingers always so big in close-ups? Do you work for GW? Why do you hate unicorns and unicrons?

At least there's no risk of splitting the party when you're on your own. But I hear Dungeon Universalis has a good solo mode, so that's something at least.

Ah, that's great. I'm glad you were inspired. And yes, if you preorder the Mythic pledge through Zavvi you do get all of the bonuses and stretch goals.

I’ve sourced alternative sculptures and printed out the PDFs from yee olde Inn for the expansions
They are too expensive and hard to come by but it led to me introducing more home brew stuff like an owl bear and beholder

Im not a fan of that flexi plastic stuff. I was sitting on the fence about getting this version and now I know the models are going to be in that medium, for the money they want I am out.

That's true, but I think the intention here was to send out a sample of what people are getting and what it could look like painted. If I hear more about materials I will share it, but at the moment I think it's safer to assume this is what people are going to receive rather than anything else.

While I was initially very tempted, and I think the game looks (mostly) very good, I decided that too much of my love of the game is bound in nostalgia, so I've focused on putting some care into restoring my original edition. But for the most part I like what Hasbro is doing, and I'm so pleased to see HeroQuest finally coming back so that more people can get to enjoy it. I hope they can get it distributed to more territories eventually. I just hope I don't eventually end up regretting my decision!

Check out the Q&A video they did (look for HeroQuest on Twitter). They confirmed the promo figure is representative of what you're getting with the game.

Yeah, it's not hard plastic. The dwarf is a pretty solid chunk of plastic though. There's only really a lot of play in the axe. He bounces nicely (oops).
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring i think im gonna like that feature, as i have 6 goblins, 1 skeleton, 4 orcs and a fimir and gargoyle that all have weapons broke off them, currently in a painting marathon on 2.5 original sets of HeroQuest minis and furniture, a kellars keep and witchlord, barbarian and mirror expansions to do, then the new Mythic HQ once it arrives.

Possibly not. I've spoken about this on the channel recently. They are currently re-releasing an exclusive character. They have just changed the miniature and artwork on the cards. It is possible that down the line they will do the same for other Mythic materials. There's no guarantee, of course, but I think it's possible.
