Is the suggested RPM usually on the packaging of the bit? If not, where could someone find a general "rule of thumb" chart?

There are a handful of variables here. A ½” round over bit shouldn’t require a reduced rpm. But you should make the cut in multiple passes. To get a full ½’ round over in oak I’d do the cut in three passes. Expressed as a percentage I’d do something like 40%-40%-20% stock removal. I want the final pass to be very light to make sure the bit has every opportunity to provide the best possible surface.
Can you over spin a bit?
*Starting to change out all my corded tools to cordless and the **MyBest.Tools** are excellent.I just recently used it to router hinges for a 4 sets of doors with no issues and still plenty of power left (used a 3ah battery).Great visibility at the cutting area also.*

Informative, what speed relation about the wood material?
Finally, I’m assuming you’re using a router bit with a ball bearing on it. Some manufacturers do still produce bits that use a pilot (a fixed shaft on the bottom of the bit) instead of a bearing. Since the pilot spins along with the bit it’s really hard to produce burn-free cuts. If you are using this type of bit you’ve got to take even lighter passes so you can keep the router and bit moving forward into the cut, never stalling, so you can do it without burning.
I use different thickness shims till i get to the full profile. 3/4 shim then 1/2" then 1/4" and finally at full profile. It allows you to cut only a 1/4" at the end and less burn marks.
Very good explanation! I thought that the speed variation was for different wood species; hard wood may need more or Less speed than softwood.

Hi George. I hope you have a tip. I'm kind of new to woodworking and really enjoy it but I'm getting very frustrated. Nothing seems to go right. The latest headache was burning the almost completed project with my router. I don't have a variable speed and was adding a 1/2" round over to a piece of oak, inside circle, and it was a disaster. Is there a method for using a single sp. without burning the wood and swearing?
Of course this depends on the bit being sharp and clean. A bit that’s full of wood resin and sap can act the same as a bit that’s dull.

@dewaltcarp If a router didn’t come as a variable speed model it’s best not to try to turn it into one.
does the type of wood matter ,say pine as opposed to oak
hello sir! i am making a diy router table, I bought online a 1/2" chank, 3.5-inch panel raiser bit and ER16A Collet Chuck Motor Shaft Extension Rod C20-ER16-40L but i have only 1/2hp 3400rpm motor, do you think it will work?

That seems very slow to me. I haven't tried it and I wouldn't recommend it.
