      Hey Dave, you know I have tried numerous times to edit that Sedona image, but my skill set wasn’t quite up to it. My recent versions have been much better as my sensibilities and skills improved, but the image didn’t have the lighting and colors just right. The sky highlights caused me the most headaches. Will be interesting and fun to see your approach. Happy Holidays and thanks for all the wonderful help in 2022.

    Great job again, Dave! This image really popped at the end. The before and after is quite noticeable. The panel is so intuitive and the way you go about using all the features is such a valuable asset when I go on editing my own images.

    Hello Dave, your edit perfectly demonstrated the importance of applying dodge and burn adjustments on an image. The glow effect was a very nice touch.

    Awesome lesson, Dave. You're doing a great job reinforcing what we already know while adding more skills with each lesson. Great teaching. If there's a way to make the cursor as visible as it always is in your lessons please throw that in to one of these lessons. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    Great tutorial! I prefer using the linear light blend mode with 10-15% fill for dodging/burning in conjunction with the dogde/burn tool in Photoshop. Learned that from Blake Rudis 👌

    Dave, great as always. with the level of complexity to the various layers for this image, did you consider renaming them to help you and the audience remember what you did on a specific layer?

    I really love all the ways to make masks with the TK panel. You can really focus on areas you want - huge game changer. But yesterday I was working on an image that I am making as a large print. At one point I had selected the subject from the sky to lightened it. Picture looked great on social media. But when I was getting it ready to print large - I noticed my object selection was horrible. It took me forever to clean up. Has this ever happened to you? Should I try to do things more globally or do you have some good settings to really separate sky naturally from subject so it blends better in large format?

    • @TonyKuyper
      @TonyKuyper Рік тому

      There are some factors to consider when using the Object Selection tool. The primary one is that it will result in a harder edge selection than luminosity masks selections. Luminosity masks automatically feather into the surrounding tones, so edge issues are much less common (frequently nonexistent) compared to hard-edge selections. That's one of the main reasons they're so useful. One technique that you'll see Dave frequently use is to intersect a selection from the Object Selection tool with a luminosity mask using the mask calculator. This can help create an edge that blends better, and indeed, I've started using this technique with good results on several images that I have printed. Whenever making adjustments, especially those that involve selections with the object selection tool, it's a good idea to zoom in and evaluate the results, especially at the edges. If the edges are obvious, it's time to backup and try something that feathers the edges better, possibly a luminosity, zone, or color mask. Or, maybe one of these pixel-based masks intersected with a selection from the Object Selection tool. Every image and every adjustment will require its own approach. Another alternative is to simply double-click on the mask and use the "Masks" dialog in the Properties panel to add a bit of "Feather" to the mask containing obvious edges. This creates physical feathering, which can also be effective in some situations.

      @@TonyKuyper Thank you Tony for all the great tips and ideas. I 100% love the panel and the complexity of the masks you can make. Is the TK8 Sky selection the same action as Photoshops sky selection? It appears the TK8 sky selection has a built in feathering along the horizon.

    • @TonyKuyper
      @TonyKuyper Рік тому

      @@peterdoering4314 The Select Sky command in TK8 simply calls the Select > Sky menu command in Photoshop. So, you'd get the same thing with that menu command as you'd get with TK8.

    Why not just dodge and burn throughout instead of using multiply and screen modes?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  Рік тому

      Good question. You can really do it anyway you want. I use a troubleshooting method of editing, where I am looking for issues and fixing them as I go. Plus, as I mentioned in this video, there are many ways of achieving the same results in Photoshop.
