If AM/MW is important to you, this is the box you want. It actually has a good (better than average) AM tuner. Much MUCH better than the ION "Street Rocker"/Crosley clone. I was prepared to do my usual ferrite rod transplant (replace the stock one with a longer one) because the one in the ION is tiny, but there's no need to. What a great little box (for the money). the modern typical "digital" tuning hence the "chuffing" effect when you tune the band. These units do not use your typical analogue tuning system of old
This has a DSP tuner with an analog dial. That is why it seems a bit wonky tuning between stations. A good DSP tuner chip is likely cheaper to manufacture than an analog tuner, and sometimes the AM section might have less interference noise than a cheap analog tuner. I wonder if there's a way to connect an external antenna, particularly for shortwave?
You can add an external antenna. I use a little Kaito reel antenna with a 22 ft wire. It can clip to the whip antenna or insert into an antenna jack if a radio has one. Sangean also makes them. You can also search UA-cam videos for info on how to improve reception. Some show how to make AM loops and other types of antennas. I used to string speaker wire out the window around a fence and a tree when i lived on the hill and it hugely improved reception on shortwave.
Thanks for adding this to your reviews. I like the look pretty much. Doesn't look huge. I was given thinking of getting the Riptunes Racr-400bt which is a mini Bluetooth boombox that plays from USB and SD Card. It has AM/FM Shortwave bands. But the thing that makes me hesitant is the jack on the side is labeled AUX-in not headphones. I tried to clear it up by reading reviews but those sometimes confuse the issue. The Racr-400bt has a clone called the SYLVANIA SRC232BT. It says PHONE next to the jack in the pictures I saw and the description says it's for headphones. The two are so alike I am sure they're made at the same factory and just branded differently. Thank you for trying out the boomboxes and letting us share the info.

I do most listening through headphones so if the Sylvania really has a headphone jack, I'd jump on that one. This Riptunes you just reviewed is pretty appealing. I need a small size box so that is a plus. Right now today I am trying to decide on the ION ISP113S versus the Crosley CT-100b which look different but similar features. Hard decision because of the features being the same. A difference of a few dollars. I'm wondering about durability or overall quality. If not for the jack issues i might have opted for the Sylvania or mini Rip. Only 12" long. I don't need a tape section. I've been reading reviews for a long time and by tonight I should make my decision which to order. Hope it's good. Question, would a USB card reader work for playback in these boomboxes? Thanks.
So I think ether one that you choose will be a fine choice. Now as for a usb card reader working on these boomboxes is a gamble. I've got some that my usb media hub works on, and others it doesn't.

Yes I got it new from Amazon. The digital conversion is very superior compared to most other ones.

Great review. A true WAV file would be much larger in size than an MP3. I wonder if it's a true WAV file. I happen to prefer WAV since it's uncompressed and more suited for post editing and processing.
I recall there were a lot more shortwave radio stations back in the 80s (which this boom box is patterned after). Voice of America, radio Moscow, Switzerland, Sweden and more. I suppose if we experience a cyber attack/grid down scenario, as some are predicting, shortwave will make a comeback.
Have you ever used the headphone socket? If so, something may have gotten stuck and it thinks a headset is plugged in so it mutes the speakers. Other than that, idk what could cause the sound to just suddenly stop working.
i hate power meters, i have a few Boomboxes with Power meters and i don't like them, i also have some boxes where the lights only flash when playing a cassette, they don't flash on Radio or Aux in, if i had the skills i would mess with the wiring and change them to flash as Vu, and on all functions.
That's complicated. I like this one for 1: the level meter isnt associated with the volume. 2: It digitally converts better. 3: its got SW. The ION i like 1: its sounds better. 2: the rechargeable battery. 3: its got the old style VU meters.
I love that design. That's how a boombox should look.
When you were checking tuner stations and Madonna came through... Suddenly this retro machine made complete sense. Might spring for one.
That logo on the right side of the radio dial kinda looks like the old National/Panasonic logo from back in the day!!!

I'm not sure. That may work long as you use it on the aux jack.

WAV files are much larger in size and of better quality than MP3.

Im not sure. All I know is the tape player, the AUX and the USB/SD player plays in stereo.
