    I read the whole comments to try to sort out this incredibly complicated wireless thermostat. Some problems keep coming up. Here was my solution:
    1. The thermostat has no effect on the hot water supply. That should be controlled by the boiler. Turn the tap on and hot water comes out no matter what the time
    2. Programmed timings, on and off:
    a) There are 6 time settings per day built into the thermostat. You can program these individually for each day, or together for weekdays and weekends, or for all 7 days taken together. I did mine for all 7 at once; you can use the same method for the individual days, or for weekend (days 6 and 7) or for weekday (days 1 to 5)
    b). Basically, for each of the 6 time settings, when the clock gets to the set time, the thermostat tells the boiler to heat the house to whatever temperature you set for that time. There is no "heating off" setting. so for example I want my house off from midnight to 0800, 14 degrees 0800-1000, off 1000 to 1800, 16 degrees 1800 to midnight. So I set program 1 to start at 0000 for the minimum temperature (5 degrees), prog2 to start 0800 at 14 degrees, prog3 to start 1000 at minimum, prog4 to 1800 at 16, prog5 for as late as I can at minimum, prog6 also late as I can to minimum. I had some problems setting progs 5 and 6 so eventually I set prog6 to 2359 and prog5 to 2358. That means my heating is min 5 degrees which is fine by me as I use it to protect against frozen pipes
    3. If you press the manual mode button the hand image shows and the system runs at some higher temperature (which you can control with the up and down buttons). I*think* it stays that way until the next programmed time comes round when it reverts to the program. The manual says you can turn manual mode off by pressing the button again, or by pressing and holding it. **I couldn't do this, but** i found that if you press and hold the menu button for three seconds or more the hand goes and the system reverts to programmed mode. this also removes boost mode
    4. Don't ask me about boost mode - I haven't worked it out yet!
    5. The wifi comms icon (image 11 in the manual) only comes on when the thermostat is communicating with the receiver. This happens when it is pairing or testing pairing, and when it has to send a message to the receiver. So it flashes on for just a short period - second or so - shortly after a program change or when you use the manual or boost button or do a temperature change. Test it that way but don't be worried if it isn't on at other times
    6. Many boilers have a switch on them attached to a clock. The switch has three positions: "off", "clock", and "on". " Off" turns the central heating boiler off completely independently of the thermostat. The clock position links to a system of mechanical tags which also switch "on" or "off" depending on the clock time. This was how boilers were controlled before thermostats were invented - the clock controls the timing but can't control the temperature. The receiver unit for the Salus controller is connected to the clock so it only controls the system when either the three position switch is "on", or when the three position switch is set to "clock" AND the clock tags are set to "on". I have set my boiler clock tags to be "on" 0730 to 1000 and 1730 to 0000, "off" at other times. This means that outside these times my central heating is off irrespective of what the thermostat and receiver are doing. Within those times the heating is controlled by the thermostat. I recommend this as a safety precaution in case you misprogram the thermostat and have your boiler using your expensive gas when it shouldn't be. But bear in mind that boost will only work when the boiler clock has the thermostat active, and any change of timings on the thermostat may mean you need to change the boiler clock settings too
    Hope this is useful

      @@timeintheuk - that's probably reasonable. I'm a bit paranoid about fuel costs so I've kept all things low/off when I can - like the house was at 12 degrees this morning but my set temps were 5 degrees at 0900 and 10 at 1000 so of course the boiler didn't come on at all. I'll raise it slowly and keep an eye on the gas meter figure. I also have to build confidence in the control and my understanding of how it works. But the guide is truly awful - doesn't say anything about boost and manual except that they exist! I think I've worked out that boost gives you one hour per push and takes the temp minimum to whatever you set it to as a one-off change to the regular pattern. The manual mode still doesn't turn off on as described - could the instructions be wrong, or the programming of the internals have been changed after the guide was written?

    • @timeintheuk
      @timeintheuk  3 роки тому +3

      Hi time and temp ... not on and off. So you set the time you want say 9am and the temp you want say 20 deg . For example you want 20 degrees at 9 throu 10 am . So set the next one to 10 am 14 degrees . That leaves spare slots at 2 6 and 10 but you want the heating off so simply set all 3 to 14 degrees . . Simply think what temp at what times and chop the day up into chunks

    Hi @time on my hands, thanks a lot for the vid. In the absence of a proper manual, this has been the best source of help. I’m trying to find out ‘work-arounds’ to try to get this device to do what I want it to. For example, to turn it off for an extended period over summer (or for a weekend away) would it be possible/advisable to turn it permanently to manual by pressing the hand icon on the controller, and reducing the temp to something like 5 degrees, then just switching manual mode off at the end of summer when I want the heating on again? Since my receiver is in the garage with the boiler, it is not easily accessible. This would be a lot easier than having to set holiday mode every weekend I want to ensure the heating stays off. Also, have you any idea how to use the ‘+Hr’ function? Thanks in anticipation!

      @@timeintheuk Hi, I mentioned I'd let you know if I found out the answer to this. I spoke to Salus, whose agent seemed to want rid of me as soon as possible, so not very helpful to be honest, but she did tell me (1) that the +Hr button is to extend a current heating cycle by however many hours you select using the up arrow after selecting this mode. To de-activate it, press the +Hr button again and the controller should revert to whichever programme is normally active at that time. (2) Summer time - if you want to switch the system off for summer but don't have easy access to the slider controls on the receiver, you can select manual mode followed by a suitably low temperature and the system will remain off unless the selected low temp is reached. Manual mode stays on until the user switches it off; it will not be over-ridden by the next timed programme kicking in. (3) the 520TX does not have frost protection mode - I suppose you would just set the temperature to 5 degrees or so. I had a lot more questions, but this was the key info I wanted. They would have made it a lot easier by having all the controls on the control device instead of having some of them on the receiver. She did tell me that they are currently writing a load of instruction manuals and that they will appear on the website in due course. Sounds a bit like the cart pushing the horse if you ask me, but that's what I was told! Thanks again to @time in the uk for the video and advice.
