Neil Sedaka performs the song "The Immigrant" in Canada in 1981.
    LYRICS
Harbours open there doors to the young searching foreigner
Come to live in the light of the big L of liberty
Plains and open skies bill boards would advertise
Was it anything like that when you arrived
Dream boats carried the future to the heart of America
People were waiting in line for a place by the river
It was time when strangers were welcome here
Music would play they tell me the days were sweet and clear
It was a sweeter tune and there was so much room
That people could come from everywhere
Now he arrvies with hopes and his heart set on miracles
Come to marry his fortune with a hand full of promises
To find they've closed the door they don't want him anymore
There isn't anymore to go around
Turning away he remembers he once heard a legend
That spoke of a mystical magical land called America
It was time when strangers were welcome here
Music would play they tell me the days were sweet and clear
It was a sweeter tune and there was so much room
That people could come from everywhere
It was time when strangers were welcome here
Music would play they tell me the days were sweet and clear
It was a sweeter tune and there was so much room
That people could come from everywhere

“I wrote a song called “The Immigrant” for my friend John Lennon during his immigration battles in the 1970s. I’ll never forget when I called to tell him about it. Overwhelmed by the gesture, he said, ‘Normally people only call me when they want something. It’s very seldom people call you to give you something. It’s beautiful.’” - Neil Sedaka

God bless I've always loved your song, & with your daughter. I fear for today's immigrants as I see a downward trajectory in America.
I a US citizen, have been treated as a non person / refugee in my own US. I fear my experience will in time translate to other Americans, & immigrants. My gut feeling. God bless

I liked The other Neil's song ie N. Diamond's Coming to America, for the same reasons, house defrauded/ homeless/ gulaged/ left 4 dead/ slave/ etc. Non person. I see myself as the pervebial " canary In the coal mine.". All true. I heard an awful unsubstantiated vocal word about slavery in Northern California. Anything is possible as it seems many hearts 💕 have grown cold. And as I've experienced it all my life as a bit dark irish/ medditeranian American I have grat empathy for everyone, as even the rich will have much to answer for, as I if I don't speak, & speak the truth. God bless Bob

With the sadness and heartbreak of how immigrants are being treated in this country; I was reminded of this beautiful song written by a beautiful man with a huge warm heart. I pray so hard for our country that we could learn to be gracious and loving to those seeking a better life in this country we call America! Was going to post this to my FB; but I'm just tired of the hatred spewing from people I had thought were better. Thanks Neil! Still listening to his daily-ish mini concerts he has hosted since the Pandemic shut down; we need a song to bring people back to their common sense and love of being Americans and treating people well!

Yes I hear you. When did all this hate come back to life. I have had to cut off some friends, some family. People who I never would have thought they were just so mean and ugly. We need immigrants. Always have always will. They make America a stronger, better nation. These folks that complain and say immigrants are criminals, it's just a load of you know what. Every nationality, every ethnic group, that has come to America over years past has had some bad apples. That usually gets ironed out. When public figures have said, out loud, that cruelty is the point, well at least we know who the problem is. Take care my friend. Just watched an interview on the Morning Joe Show with Joe and Neil Sedaka. It was great. It was on the MSNBC network. It will probably come up on UA-cam within a day or two. Or on MSNBC website.

@@thomasmagnum3588 You know what's funny about MSNBC? Most of there hosts and guests are conservatives and were Republicans until trump stole the election. Joe Scarborough is a very conservative ex-Republican Congressman. A lot of the hosts and guests have worked for Republican presidents or causes in the past. I resigned from the Republican party after 45yrs. The Republicans today are wimps. They have been overrun by the magas. A small minority of extreme people who can only stir up hate and violence. And they spread it around. Their hero is that sick dude trump. He's a hater. He promotes violence. Now trump is a convicted sexual abuser. I'm surprised that Fox news even reported that tonight. I don't know how many times I watched news worthy events live and Fox never even mentioned it. I watch both sides of news, liberal and conservative. I read both sides of the news liberal and conservative. I don't bother with the whacked out, crazy sources that are just trying to make money off of made up bullshit. Those are the haters. Mostly uneducated, can't read, can't reason. without even a drop of common sense. These haters aren't the first to show up in American or world history. They will be dealt with and receive appropriate justice thru our system based on the rule of law. And the simplest way, is to vote the rascals out. I hope trump runs for president again, that way the good guys, can keep beating trump and his haters until they go back and hide under the rock they slithered out from under. We've just got to keep trump out of jail, just long enough so he can endorse all the losers and haters. Which will allow the good guys to gain an overwhelmingly majority and get back to making more improvements to an already great country. Good luck son.

Immigrants who obey the law are generally treated just fine, but people are correctly resentful of those who come illegally and then demand free housing and healthcare. If immigrants are treated badly they can always go home, they came here by choice. Better yet why don't YOU be gracious and let an immigrant family live with you?

If they should know this country's history better, they would know that my kids are the fifth (not second, nor third, nor fourth) generation of Americans. Ps by the way, I'm Puerto Rican and an American veteran, very proudly.
