  • In this video clip Master James exposes one of the biggest flaws that 99-out-of-100 MMA fighters make, but make they don't even realize it.
PROPER BODY STRUCTURE | ALLOWING NON-TELEGRAPHIC DEPLOYMENT OF THE LEAD LEG
--- Muay Thai practitioners, Karate fighters, and Boxers bring a serious tactical flaw into the MMA game and they don't realize it.
Notice that when a fighter leans forward too much on their lead leg, they take away the ability to use the lead leg or forward hand as a powerful weapon. Your lead leg should always be prepared to sweep, intercept, or strike on demand and without telegraphing in advance.
The only way to correct this tactical flaw is to utilize and adapt a body structure suitable for MMA (which is radically different from the limitations of stand-up based striking systems).
    UNDERSTANDING PROPER BODY STRUCTURE
In traditional Japanese budo systems, the term, "Kamae" (構え) is used to represent "posture". The Kanji of this word means "base".
Kamae is different from the word tachi (立ち), used in Japanese martial arts to mean, stance. Taichi refers to the position of the body from the waist down. On the other hand, kamae refers to the posture of the entire body, as well as encompassing one's mental posture (i.e., one's attitude).
These connected mental and physical aspects of readiness are collectively referred to as kokoro-gamae (心構え) and mi-gamae (身構え), respectively. When we translate the true meaning of these two phrases from Japanese to English we discover that Kokoro-gamae, which consists of two different words meaning, "heart or mind", and "kamae", meaning, stance-in-preparation-for-something.

    PRACTICAL VALUE
In actual competition, a karate instructor ordering the students to assume a front stance or fighting stance may shout aloud, "Zenkutsu dachi, kamaete!" This is a direct command to prepare the posture and structure of your body, mind, and spirit to fight.
    ---------------------------------------
Master James demonstrates three training drills to help you overcome the bad habit of poor structure. You are looking at three very important [footwork drills] designed to help you improve body structure for mixed martial arts.
    PROPER BODY STRUCTURE HELPS YOU ACCOMPLISH THREE IMPORTANT OBJECTIVES;
    1. Become a hard to figure out, unpredictable and elusive hard to hit target.
    2. Master [the science of ring control] which most MMA fighters have little or no understanding at all about whatsoever. Ring control is the art of forcing your opponent to follow your lead. This requires practicing footwork drills that force an opponent to play catch up to the deceptive footwork that you feed to them.
    3. Control the pace of the fight, control the distance and forcing your opponent to play your game. Again, to be successful in these three areas demands that you put footwork training drills in place. Failure to train in footwork puts you at a serious disadvantage.
Bruce Lee once commented that Muhammad Ali would "kill him" in a real fight. Bruce went on to explain the reason why is because Ali's footwork made him very difficult to follow, track and trace. If you find a target you certainly cannot hit it.
    Study the footwork of:
    Muhammad Ali
    Willie Pep
    Pernell Whitaker
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Bernard Hopkins
    Ricardo Mayorga
    Gene Tunney
    Floyd "Money" Mayweather

I'm going to be in the area in a month or so. Always looking to learn something new. Always have room in my tool box for another skill.

Solid. A very good drill sir. The speed of switching up the stance so fast is a huge distraction to your opponent. But it takes solid conditioning to do that for several rounds. I don't see many fighters doing that except for Jon Jones, Holly Holms, Lyoda Machida, Wonderboy, Alexander Gustaffson and Dominick Cruz.

Can you do a short video demonstrating more on proper structure as you call it? Also, I notice that when you shift step, your knees don't bend down, your shoulders don't flinch, and movement is non telegraphic. That is very impressive and scary. Suddenly you appear 4 to 6 feet at a different part of the ring. I would like to see more. Thank you sir.
