But i believe Mattingly deserved it since he was probably the best all around player on offensive and was prob best defensive fielding 1st basemen in baseball. He even hit career best 352 avg that season with power!

Now as an 83 year old grandpa , I see a lot of baseball nostalgia from my old days on UA-cam . I’ve seen many videos of Don Mattingly playing baseball with the Yankees and in interviews of him after retirement as an active player , a coach and as a manager . Looking at his stats , reviewing what I’ve seen of him as an exciting , elegant and talented player and at him as a very decent , humble and good-hearted human being , a true baseball star and idol , I can’t for the life of me see why he is not in the hall of fame . . . YET . Sports writers , get your stuff together, check out this man’s significant accomplishments on the field and the class and dignity he gave to the game of baseball and VOTE HIM IN ! We sat in the Mickey Mantle booth, & ordered lunch and I ordered a draft beer. The place wasn’t busy, but I had bought a hat and T-shirt. As I was drinking my draft beer, I noticed a bottle cap frozen into the bottom of the glass. I told the waitress, she apologized & said the boss would like to see this. So here comes Donnie Baseball bringing me my replacement beer. He comped our lunch over my objections, and couldn’t have been a nicer guy! (I’d include photos, but this post doesn’t permit it)

His career was cut short by a back injury that lowered his numbers in his last 5 seasons so he only has 9 years where he was 100% healthy and the Yankees were not that good in the late 80s and very early 90s. His MVP season was remarks me as was the season right before and after and his power numbers were rising until 87 when a sharp decline began. His batting average dipped yo .256 in 1990 due to his back injury. He did make adjustments and renamed between .288 and .304 those last 5 seasons. He was having a good season in 1990 and the Yankees were in first place after 97 games until the strike was started and the rest of the season cancelled altogher. In 95 the NLDS which the Yankees lose in 5 games Mattingly batted .417 with 10 hirs, 4 of which were doubles, and one home run. He also had 6 RBI. His career stats include 2153 hits in 7003 at bats giving him a .307 avg. He had 222 home runs and 1099 RBI. He had a 1st base record 9 gold gloves and 3 silver slugger awards. He won the AL batting title in 1984 and AL MVP in 1985. He also displayed exemplary character during an often tumultuous era for the Yankees. After writing this down I agree that he belongs in the hall of fame.
What Don doesn't know is Rod Carew wanted to be like Don Mattingly as a hitter. Lol! It's weird hearing Donnie talk about being intimidated by certain players. I always thought Donnie was the one who was intimidating just seeing him at the plate with that menacing mustache and knowing he could rip the cover off the next pitch. I did read an article, I think it was sports illustrated years ago, about the story when he sat down with Ted Williams and they talked about hitting.
