- Republican lawmakers in Tennessee are looking to pass a new common-law marriage bill that would do away with minimum age requirements and age limits for a man and a woman wanting to get married. "A proposal making its way through the state legislature would establish a common-law marriage between “one man” and “one woman.”
Opponents of the bill (HB 233) say it would eliminate an age requirement, and in some instances, open the door for a coverup of child sex abuse.
The bill’s sponsor, Tom Leatherwood (R-Arlington) said the law being considered would add a new marriage option for Tennesseans.
“So, all this bill does is give an alternative form of marriage for those pastors and other individuals who have a conscientious objection to the current pathway to marriage in our law,” Leatherwood said.
But missing from the bill are age requirements, opening the door for possible child marriages - something the bill sponsor acknowledged during a Children and Family Affairs subcommittee.
“There is not an explicit age limit,” Leatherwood said.
Rep. Mike Stewart (D-Nashville), who sits on the subcommittee the bill passed out of, said he doesn’t understand the motivation.
“I don’t think any normal person thinks we shouldn’t have an age requirement for marriage,” he said.
He added it could open up the possibility to cover up child sex abuse."

This will increase the maternity mortality rate when young girls start being impregnated by their husbands when they are too young to handle pregnancy.
I worked at a clinic that did abortions and we had a 14 year old patient brought in because her family thought she was too young to have a baby but yet they had no problem that she was married to a 26 year old man. This is what happens when a man marries a child.
This bill would make child abuse legal.

Republican evangelicals are always touting the idea that marriage is “between one man and one woman” have they actually read the Bible??
I actually learnt that for years the church despised marrage as it took worship away from god. Marrage was originally carried out by the town mayor or sherif, it was never done in a church it was done in council building.
It was only after the church realised that they couldf get more people into the church if they took it over did they decide to take control and turn it into a religious thing.
Marrage was litrally a murger of two households, the ring basically showed thaty the woman was taken by someone, the families would agree how much the daughter was worth, the families would then agree and the two would be united. Securing the blood line of both pwoerful houses.
An indian marrage still has a dowry, every marraige use to be that way as it wasn't about religion it was about power and money.

I was married at 13 in Florida in the 70's running from a bad home life right into another bad life where I had a child and was abused for 5 years until I got out. My son paid the price for this. I will never forgive myself. He passed away 9 years ago and I still think of how bad his life was because of the choices I was allowed to make as a child. It should have never happened. 😢

Full disclosure she was 19 (I was 21 so still an immature kid myself). To our knowledge, we had known each other since 2nd grade (although our parents said, we actually met before that) and our families had been friends since way before either of us were born.
We are definitely the exception to the rule about marrying young. If I had to do it over again, I would have waited until I was at least 30 to get married but she would be my only pick.
Despite our successful 18 year marriage and recalling our struggles, I can't see how someone as young as 14 or 16 can honestly say that they are ready for marriage. Rethink this one Tennessee.

I’m not sure how I feel about age 19. I think that’s old enough to make sexual decisions, so the age of consent should be lower, but the age for marriage? I’m not so sure. Ozzy says he was lucky to have made a good marriage at such a young age. I think probably 19 is old enough, but marriage-divorce stats would seem to suggest that maybe we should not encourage people in late teens to early 20s quite so much to jump into marriage quickly. So allow it but don’t promote it is what I’d say.

UPDATE : Under quite a lot of pressure from other lawmakers, the bill has been amended as of yesterday - both parties now have to be at least 18.

Just so we know, legislators do not write their own bills. They give what they want in the bill then the legislative drafting department (in every state legislature since not everyone went to law school) writes the bill for legal reasons. They had to have checked with the lawmaker to make sure he knew that there was no age limit in the bill.
Tennessee is another state I will never go to ever again with the way they are treating women and girls and now prosecuting nurses for making mistakes. There is another story about a comptroller which I don’t remember the details about but sounds insane.
