would highly recommend Tolaini's Valdisanti IGT. I can find it in NY in the 30 dollar range and its an absolute steal. They changed up the blend a few years ago and right now its 50-50 Cab Sauv Cab Franc. Doesn't feel to heavy in feel and its perfect with or without food.
Imagine a career tasting the best wines in the world. You probably make a successful food channel with all the great pairings mentioned across all of your episodes.
True, you do mention some great pairings. But for instance, let's say that you recommend a traditional Hungarian dish to pair with a red blend from Hungary. I can take that suggestion to the amazing World Wide Web and find a video on how to prepaid the dish. But since the extent of my understanding of the Hungarian language is basically limited to "nem", "Egan", and "Hol Vana Vey Say", then I wouldn't understand a word they say, and I would remain clueless on where to start preparing the food. I do however feel confident in that I could prepare any dish that you might pair with a Smokie Mountains Blackberry wine. Unless of course, if the recipe starts with some sort of Appalation roadkill. d8^D
I had Sassicaia 2001 two years ago. The best wine I’ve ever had. Was just perfect. Although price has skyrocketed in the last years. Fantastic recommendation though, I will certainly try Orma.
I agree Bolgheri plus side area's has it's place in Italy. Nothing wrong with Bordeaux-style wines from Italy. It does not need to be Sangiovese every day ;-). I saw prices went up quite a bit. The Orma 2018 does 100 euro here. Luckily there are affordable Bolgheri's as well. What's your opinion on Moreccio and Varvara?
I’m reading the comment, and I can’t believe I’m not seeing anyone speaking of Giorgio Meletti, Bolgheri Superiore “Impronte” DOC. Around 35-45€ outstanding wine.
Cool video. Never had Sassicaia, but I'll keep an eye out for the Orma. Great find! I like this video bc I've never quite known how to feel about Super Tuscans. 1- The best are very expensive, and 2- as you say, many feel that Italy should stick to Italians grapes. Super Tuscans aren't "cool" any more with the hip wine crowd. But then I'll have a fantastic one and wonder why so many people are down on them. Sammarco with age is one of my favorites!
Great video. Thank you. I had Sassicaia in a London restaurant around 1980 A fantastic wine, I still remember it. Back then its price was still affordable. Sadly those days are gone. I'd love to try the Tenuta but unfortunately here in the UK it doesn't seem to be available.
Thanks for the tip Matthew! Found Orma 2018 at €54 and just had it with a ribeye. Stunning wine indeed, wow. Concentration, freshness, length.. its all there big time. Salute!
Great video as usual! Reminded me of a time where I had the chance to taste 100ml of Sassicaia for HKD 100...so regret that I did not go for it (and I still haven't ever tried the wine yet 🥲🥲)
And by the way….will right away buy 3 new bottles that I never drank due to the comments below and your video. Very much appreciate your content! It helps a lot.
come on men you said on another video that the Argentiera' Bolgheri Superiore was almost like sassicaia .,.. please give us the most closely to sassicaia jejeje
For my birthday, last month I opened a trio of 1996's, one of which was the 1996 Ornelaia. It was wonderful, so Bordeaux like. The nose was so integrated and plush I could just spend the whole night smelling it. Best part is that I purchased it for USD 50 many years ago! glad I waited...
Agree…I have had a few Ornellaias from the ‘92 - ‘97 vintage and they were all amazing and drinking at their peak. This was about three years ago. I have stocked up on the ‘16-‘19 and hoping they will be the same with same age.🍷
1996 Ornellaia was the most complex red wine I have encountered. I believe some critics gave it a 100 point score. I imagine the current release is too pricey for me. Oh well.
Super toscan are very expensive, you can find nice left bank Bdx for a fraction of that price with a better complexity and versatility. In Toscana, Chianti classico riserva represents, for me, the best typicity and value. For exemple Barocco riserva 2018.
Good taste! You’re preaching to the choir here as I love Chianti Classico as it represents insane value for money and I always talk about it on the channel.
Had Sassicaia 93’ last new year and I was disappointed, it was tired! Orma I find a bit rough where as Oreno is better and more elegant to me. Have to echo Argentiera and especially Donoratico which you can get around 30€
Tim, you’re killing me! Don’t be giving up these sleepers like Orma and Oreno….hard enough to find any more ‘15’s and ‘16’s. Lol. If you haven’t tried Caiarossa, it’s at Orma quality level and price point. Bordeaux varietals with a very small % of Sangiovese and Alicante. Keep up the great work.
thanks for showing two interesting wines I've never heard about before. are they already ready to drink? it's hard to believe that such complex wines are already at peak maturity or close to it, although never say never... as for Italian Bordeaux, I'm a huge fan of Loredan Gasparini's Capo di Stato from Veneto. had a 11-year-old bottle some time ago and it was as good as it gets!
Mathew you dont have a box of Sassicaia in your cellar? 😮😅 nothing wrong with having international varieties, not in Italy not even in Georgia but when they become more popular than your own stuff and are most in demand and expensive wines, thats when the questions arise 😅
Completely agree, certain wines do burn a memory, the taste, the flavor, then you find yourself on a quest to discover that again & this is how we become wine fanatics! Lol
Poggio al tesoro - sondraia is my favorite super tuscan but I have never tried Orma. I have tried almost all wines by Tenuta san Guido and Ornellaia tho. Great video as always!
My blind tasting skills are just developing into being able to pick out a cab or a merlot or a syrah or nebbiolo or a pinot. If you gave me a sassicaia in a blind tasting I'd be screwed for sure
Il Borro’s flagship has been rapidly improving. You’ll see their Amfora Sangiovese soon. In the meantime you’ll like this: ua-cam.com/video/rJ-ysUJP6tE/v-deo.html
Hey Mathew, I tried Orma 2018 last winter, and to tell you the truth, it didn't impress me much. It felt a bit young and underdeveloped. Oreno 2017, on the other hand, was amazing. The kind of wine that you want to drink it all night and never want to finish. Have you tried Oreno and how would you compare it to Sassicaia?
the 'other' one is not cheap either, but it's much cheaper!!! dr. horkey, i think it would behoove you to have one of those live Q&A tastings on youtube. it would be a good way of getting people drinking.
if you really like the ornellaia/sassicaia style, you should try mazzei tenuta belguardo (prefer 2016 or 2019). it's a blend of 90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. a really good value for money super tuscan, since its widely available for around 40 euro.
I don’t like the way ur blind testing these wines. U need to first eliminate that it’s not likely to be a certain varietals first by looking at the color than the taste than the alcohol level than the geographical location. Bcs most of the time ur confusing urself if u don’t follow the rules. At last u should make the decision for what ur thinking it is based on eliminating the above. Ur not giving me adequate info when ur tasting the wine. Sorry
You need to try Argentiera, the flagship wine of Tenuta Argentiera. Around the same price as Orma.
I have tried it many times and recommend it in my Super Tuscan Overrated Underrated Video
That's a great wine
would highly recommend Tolaini's Valdisanti IGT. I can find it in NY in the 30 dollar range and its an absolute steal. They changed up the blend a few years ago and right now its 50-50 Cab Sauv Cab Franc. Doesn't feel to heavy in feel and its perfect with or without food.

Yup! I love the Valdisanti. Fantastic QPR, especially if you let it breathe for at least a couple of hours.
I was just at Tolaini. Liked Valdisenti but my heart went Picconero, 100% Merlot.
Wow, I really thought this video was about Argentiera!
Also a good wine!

I had Sassicaia 2001 two years ago. The best wine I’ve ever had. Was just perfect. Although price has skyrocketed in the last years. Fantastic recommendation though, I will certainly try Orma.
That vintage of Sassicaia is delicious. Good call!
Sangiovese every day sounds fine to me! Hahaha I do like the latter wine, nice stuff
How about Argentiera Supriore, fantastic wine!
Fantastic wine
I tested SASSICAIA 2017 vintage in 2021 , it had high acidity! Without some meal it cannot be consumed ! It was a terrible wine for such a price!
With high ticket wines price isn’t always indicative of quality!
Try St. Giorgio Toscana IGT Super Tuscan.
Niceee
Guidalberto ftw!
Good wine!
mass produced wine and priced accordingly to its marketing.
I’m reading the comment, and I can’t believe I’m not seeing anyone speaking of Giorgio Meletti, Bolgheri Superiore “Impronte” DOC. Around 35-45€ outstanding wine.

Love Sassicaia.
But it is getting expensive. The Orma sounds like a bargain.
Well done 👍
It is comparatively!
Great video. Thank you. I had Sassicaia in a London restaurant around 1980 A fantastic wine, I still remember it. Back then its price was still affordable. Sadly those days are gone. I'd love to try the Tenuta but unfortunately here in the UK it doesn't seem to be available.
Wowzzasss you had some of the OG vintages!
Why the (horrible) music in the background? This video is barley watchable. Best regards!
Thanks!
After we bought Gabriel glasses…we don’t use any other glasses…
Niceeeee, glad you like them
What a load of nonsense. Please mask your promotionele talk better in the future

Ahhhh glad you enjoyed it
Had Sassicaia twice in my life, and it was absolutely great, but definitely way too expensive nowadays
It’s not cheap for sure!
I've never had Sassicaia and I don't know any alternative to it but I do know how to leave a comment!
🤣🤣😂 Hahahaha and for that I appreicate you
Tua Rita Giusto di Notri, Volta di Bertinga and Donna Olimpia Millepassi
😮
Great video as usual! Reminded me of a time where I had the chance to taste 100ml of Sassicaia for HKD 100...so regret that I did not go for it (and I still haven't ever tried the wine yet 🥲🥲)
😮😮😮😮 that actually is a great price for a pour of Sassicaia
found a 2016 from wine legend yippee ....
A GREAT vintage in Tuscany!
Biserno bibbona is less expensive (still costs 130 bucks) but way better then sassicaia from my perspective
It is yummmy
And by the way….will right away buy 3 new bottles that I never drank due to the comments below and your video. Very much appreciate your content! It helps a lot.
Cheers! Been catching up with your videos. True story- Tuscany has some great bargains, if you look beyond the well known names 🍷

I know you'r going to love the San Giusto a Rentennano . Percarlo. 100% Sangiovese.
Well its from Toscana. but still :)
Fantastic wine!
Have u tried the wines from Ornellaias neighbour Chiappini. Their Guado Di Gemoli is way up there in quality

Depends on if you like the taste of aged wines or more fruit!
Tried Orma recently and it blew my mind. Bought Passi di Orma but haven’t try it, what are your thoughts on it?
Not in the same league as flagship Orma IMO
Great video my go to super Tuscan is Argentiera, both of those wines look very interesting. I will try to find one. Thanks love super Tuscan’s
