Tap into your bearings with vibration sensors that can tell you if things are getting a little shaky in your installed industrial fan application. Keep it smooth for extended bearing life..
Vibration monitoring gives you the data needed to keep things running smoothly for extended bearing life. The standard Installation, Operations and Maintenance manual (IOM) will recommend keeping vibrations under .124 inches per second for industrial fans operating in the installed state. To measure accurately, you’ll need to tap into more than one point on the bearings. In this 1⅓-minute video, Senior Application Engineer Chet White demonstrates how to set it up.

In our standard IOM manual, most fans we recommend having something no greater than .124 inches per second when you’re operating in its installed state. So we’re looking at a fan here with two split pillow block bearings, one here, one here. So where do you want to pick up your vibration? It’s typically going to come out in these two bearings. So you’d like to put vibration sensors like this one, you drill and tap into this bearing. And the spots where you want to drill and tap for vibration sensors, there are really three spots on each bearing that you don’t want to exceed .124 inches per second. They are the vertical, the horizontal, and the axial. So if you want maximum consideration for vibration on a bearing, you put in three sensors. Most commonly, you put in two sensors - one on the vertical and the horizontal - because they’re most likely to pick up the most vibration. So you drill in tap a port here, a port here, you install this vibration sensor into that port, and you connect your vibration sensor into your control loop back to your control room and always pick up vibrations at your bearings.
