- Creating a perfect man's wardrobe isn't about following a prescribed list of items. It’s about having a method in place that guides you through creating a sense of personal style.
To help you navigate this I’ve created 10 commandments of building a man's wardrobe. These have evolved as I have built my wardrobe and I wish I had them when I started. It would have saved me a lot of time, and money… and looking like a bit of a prat.

AMEN brother!
Thanks mate. Hope you’re well.
I would love to see more of your take on menswear in media. Specifically a reaction to the clothes in the TV show the Bear. The main character has a deep love for denim and his collection is used to drive the plot at times.
Great your back Ive been waiting for the next installment nearly as much as the mandalorian. 👍👍👍
Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a good compliment 😊😊😊
@@CeeAreDee Ive just dropped on a g star raw denim jacket a bargain from tk max. It looks pre washed but unsure if it needs a soak ?
a no date sub Rolex works with every outfit perfectly. Its an iconic timepiece and conversation starter.
Yeah. I mean. You’re totally right. I just can’t carry the baggage that come with them.
@@CeeAreDee buy a tudor black bay 58 instead 😎
Great principles! Late last year I had my ‘maybe I should plan my wardrobe out more’ moment and have been thinking about it very similarly to your first few commandments.
Nice. How’s it progressing?
@@CeeAreDee So far so good! All of my clothes are those colors you mentioned already, so now it’s a matter of getting some pieces that’ll tie it all together. 3sixteen’s recent drops have been amazing, definitely gonna get some stonewashed jeans from them this summer.
For someone who is starting to build their own wardrobe, hopefully this video will help me avoid mistake i made in the future. The first thing i bought is a pair of boots(still waiting for delivery) and i will slowly make my way up , let hope that i will not fuck this up
Nice. What did you get to start things off? As for fucking it up. Don’t worry too much. You’ll get some bricks along the way. All part of the process.
@@CeeAreDee I order a Nicks heritage tanker with natural veg tan leather. Always want a 8 inch boots but cant get my head around on lacing that thing up every single time i go out, the tanker boots just fix that problem for me!
And after that boots arrive i will go and get a straight cut jeans to hem.
Welcome back! We've missed your videos!
Thanks Cory. Yeah. Needed a bit of a reset. Didn’t mean it that way. But it ended up being that way.
URA genius.....make a million, spend a million....on whoever makes you feel happy.....stay safe, stay lucky and happy.....and keep cranking out content.....I now have a totally different wardrobe and enough denim to sink a battleship
God Bless you and yours
Thanks for this Matt!
My pleasure!
website looks great never seen it before will for sure be using it going forward
Yeah. It was a bit of a blog for a while that fell by the wayside when the UA-cam picked up. But it’s good to park the sales resources there.
Nice overcoat ! I’d like one of those
I like all your choices but I can’t get with those white shoe things or khaki chinos .
Also remember that when you have a few archetypes in different neutral colors you multiply the amount of total outfits you can create.
Very true words.
Thanks for the new video
No problem! My pleasure
Finally some levelheaded, sound advice. Much appreciated, Matthew. By the by, what do you make of Ace & Tate glasses? They‘ve got a reasonable range of quality timeless acetate styles, usually in two sizes to fit smaller/wider faces. Something I’ve come to appreciate with the years. Service is excellent and they haven’t let me down yet. Strikes me as a sensible alternative to ordering glasses from the US.
Which is not to say I‘m against Huckberry, some fine articles to find there. Their waxed Trucker is a personal favourite of mine. I just prefer to buy my glasses in a physical shop. And it’s actually quite lovely at their premises.
haha, I never had any other glasses and in fact I had an eye test there today. Amazing range and ok prices.
Hey man, love your channel! Speaking of Novesta, are you planning on reviewing some of the made in Europe brands such as Big Star Jeans and the made-in-Mönchengladbach clothes that C&A has started making or even some smaller makers?
Keep up the great work!
Hey buddy. Hmm. If not planned on it but I’ll look into it. Thanks for the kind words
@@CeeAreDee No worries man and again, great channel and keep up the good work!
I like the design of that wallet! Where’s it from?
Great video!
Any particular reason for the Andersen Andersen pick? (I'm assuming it's the turtle neck you meant). I love sailor/fisherman knits due to their quality/tight gauge knit. I recently got a North Sea Clothing one. Always on the lookout however. What's the particular merit of the Andersen Andersen in your esteemed opinion?
There’s something about the wool, combined with the way it’s spun and knitted. It never loses its snap or pills. I’ve had mine for few years and you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and a new one.
@@CeeAreDee Cheers for the reply! Appreciate the steer. It certainly looks good on you!
One supplementary if I may? The height of the neck looks (mercifully) shorter than most other turtle necks. Would you say that's a fair comment? Lots of others seem to come up way too high like a neck brace-which os very distracting to wear-but that one isn't grazing your chin at all. (Which seems like a huge plus to me if I'm right!!)
@@CeeAreDee Great video - what's the sizing like on the Andersen Andersen? Bit hard to find size charts for Sailor Turtleneck, and don't want to be swamped in one
Can we call you denim Moses? THE PROPHET OF THE GOD OF STYLE HATH SPOKEN!!
Haha. Does that mean I need to carry a staff?
@@CeeAreDee yes so you could lead us denim heads into the promised land of Japan
Great video. What jeans are you wearing in the scene with the overcoat?
Orslow 105. Amazing jeans!
Would you consider brown a neutral as well? I recently purchased a couple brown t-shirts
Good question. Hmmm. I think yes. But it’s not really my colour. Then again, I’ve got a few brown leather jackets. So yip. It’s a good choice.
really really appreciate your channel, content & your personality but i was a bit amused by your rolex statement … wearing a watch from the sister brand & steinhart inspired by rolex :)
Wow, I’ve never seen a Tudor with that dial!
It’s an old one from the 80s I think. The date day. Basically the Tudor version of the day date. So produced with an eta movement and non precious metal for the case. This one must have been kept in the box or fell down the back of a sofa for decades. When I bought it, it was practically brand new. No signs of wear and tear. Gonna change that tho. 😂
can someone tell me about the brand called atlast & co, tenderloin and butcher products their fits is just insane. But i have no clue where i can buy that or just their history
Any advice for a hot climate? 6 months of the year here are sweltering… feels hard to style something other than changing my shoes and shirt around the denim…
You’re sticking with the jeans no matter what? You can have a lot of fun with this I think. Linen will be your best friend.
Do you have any suggestions for brands that do good “Tall” sizing. A lot of brand don’t offer it or it’s negligible in the difference from standard sizing. I want T-shirt’s that won’t creep up if I raise my arms and long sleeves that pass my wrists.
Huckberry do some really good tall pieces prf.hn/l/Lb1XDDx
Land's End has a lot of tall sizes
matt, im such a big fan of your work. If i could give you some advice, please make your videos just a little bit slower paced. English is not my native language (im from brazil), and i also like to take notes of some sort with your recomendations..but nonetheless, keep up with your work!
Oh oh. I get such contradictory opinions on the pace. I hope I’ll find a happy medium. Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for the video. Sorry who made the Chelsea boots? The link goes to Benzak denim....
Whoops. Thanks for letting me know. They are Viberg.
@@CeeAreDee Great! Thank you!
Great video, but I would say always a Rolex. There is nothing better than a sub. You can absolutely wear it with everything from T-shirt to a Tux. It will never go out of style. It will run forever, and it’s A great investment to boot. Anybody that says otherwise either can’t afford it, or has much more expensive/complicated watches and thinks Rolex is rubbish.
Probably should have qualified that statement a bit. I love Rolex as a product. I mean, I opted for a Tudor in place of one and it wasn’t a financial deco. I just can’t carry the baggage that comes along with them these days.
Rolex explorer 1 in 36 mm all day long 🎉
You just described what's in my closet 😅
You’re ahead of the game. What’s next for you?
@@CeeAreDee actually I'm very satisfied with what i have , I'm just always looking for a higher quality item when restocking socks or t-shirts.
But right now I'm looking for my end game wrist watch , gotta be a diver. So I'm considering multiple Japanese options from Seiko.
I had my eyes on a Steinhart, the only thing that's keeping me from buying it is that it looks like a rolex.
For the algorithm ❤️
Appreciate it brother.
Nice video with good explanations... Simply because of my location (Hawaii) and culture my wardrobe looks much different from yours but the principle is the same. So you don't like Cillian Murphy's look? Lol
Ah. The looks strong but so many guys are going the peaky blinders cos play route 😂
@@CeeAreDee 😂😂😂 really??? Haircut and all?
@@lowkeybredhead8083 aww man. There’s barber shops in Berlin that would not be open if it wasn’t for the show. My barber hates when folk ask him for a fade to skin long on top 😂
@@CeeAreDee 😂😂😂 that haircut is rough. That leather jacket is straight fuckin fire btw
Miss your videos! When will you be back? 🤖
5:11 id on these chinos??
De bonne facture. Funny story on how they came to be in my possession
A story worth telling?? Hahah
no method but chaos 😈
Where is your overcoat from?
That’s from ABCL. It was a collab they did with the Berlin store Burg & Schild.
What is wrong with rolex?
Rolex the product is incredible. It’s just the baggage they come with I can’t deal with.
Big points for “never a rolex” that brand lost all credibility when it started artificially limiting supply and using waitlists for clout.
Thank you 🙏🏻. These things just come with way too much negativity these days.
i am a man.. I wear what ever I want.
Me too.
Why no Rolex?
I find what the brand has become in the last few years quite distasteful.
Trainers need to be leather minimalist.
Like common project and the like? Nah. Not for me. There’s a disparity there that I can’t balance.
No 1 mistake for men in the nordic countries: NL, DE, DK, SE and such: they don't understand the white T-shirt. It is for summer with nothing on top, and nothing underneath. Maybe a jacket. Most men in these countries ruin their look with a white T collar popping out under their button downs. Learn from the mediterian countries: tank top as undergarment, button up shirt with top buttons open (NEVER button-down!) tucked in the pants, belt. A flanel shirt as jacket on a shirt is perfect for saturdays around the house, but it is not stylish. If you like the warmth of flanel, treat it as much as a button-up, although you can leave it untucked. For example blazer, buttoned flanel (some buttons open at the top), tank. And the blazer longer than the untucked flanel.
Ba' heid....hahah.
The Scottish will oot
@@CeeAreDee indeed…jings, crivvens, help ma boab…next vid presented atop a bucket please 😉
''never a rolex'' wears a tudor lol
Yeah. Still not a Rolex. Just can’t take the baggage.
@@CeeAreDee I just thought it's funny bc it's like saying you don't like VW while driving a Skoda
About the jackets, I hate to say this but a black leather jacket is not easy to pull off. It’s very easy to look douchey in one. Even a denim jacket is a bit douchey!
😂😂 I think we’ll need to agree to disagree on that one.
@@CeeAreDee well of course you’re going to disagree since you wear them! Especially the black leather jacket- In my honest opinion it’s very difficult to pull off unless you’re a tough guy! I have one which I’ve had actually for a long time and I’ve only worn it once. I just didn’t feel comfortable in it!
@@stricht8 I ain’t tough and I look fly in my black leather. 😏
@@CeeAreDee you must have greater self confidence than me!
@@stricht8 just try it out mate. You’ll grow into it. Honestly, confidence just comes from doing things enough times.
Why never a Rolex?
Should have qualified that a bit. I just can’t deal with the baggage they come with these days.
I'm weary of people whose outerwear apparel for the inclements don't include a hood as such people like to aim for my eyes with their brollies ( grrr..).I'm sure you're not one of those Sir(?).
WTF, a lot of those brands listed on those sites have single pieces of clothing going for hundreds of dollars. Even if I had the money it still is extremely silly to spend hundreds on just a basic shirt or pair of pants. Luxury prices for basic essentials does not make sense to me.
Then this isn't the channel for you, my friend. Don't get me wrong, I won't spend over $20 for a t-shirt, but a pair of jeans, a flannel, boots, or a jacket are going to cost you if you want quality, craftsmanship, and the peace of mind knowing that your money is going to a company that employs skilled laborers at a fair wage. How much do you spend right now on piles of cheap Chinese/Indonesian/Bangladeshi sweatshop clothes? Quality over quantity, like Matt said.
NOOOO CHELSEA BOOTS! First, they're not sure what they are. A Roper or a Slipper. Second, you can't actually work in them without risking a rolled ankle or falling down stairs if you step wrong. They offer no support. Third, i may be programed to feel. Only women wear Chelsea boots where I'm from. Men wear real cowboy boots, work boots, or hiking boots. I've never in my life seen a man wear them except on the internet.
Christ are you really telling dudes to just not wear colours? This list seems focused on making all guys look the same.
Nope. I think I clearly say that these are my choices. And I’m a fan of introducing colours after a solid base is built up.
Why no Rolex?
They just come with way too much baggage these days.
@@CeeAreDee lol…..at least your wearing a Tudor…lol
In a lot of places wearing a Rolex will get you jacked real quick 😂
@@lowkeybredhead8083 I thought that was just in LA….lol. I totally understand. I was just kidding
@@hbmex1928 In London, on one occasion (?), a Rolex actually cost someone 's arm ( see Paul Thorpe on UA-cam).
