Honda Main Relay Repair

  • Having no start problems with your Honda vehicle ? Well on this video I show how to repair the main relay assembly on a 1990 Honda Accord with 2.2 engine, many Honda models have main relays that go bad from time to time and can be repaired from little to no money at all. The main relays are common problems with Honda's especially with the mitsuba type relays which are OEM, The solder used in these relays tend to crack and cut off the connection needed for the fuel pump or ecu/ecm to function. A soldering iron is all that is needed but if you can't get your hands on one you could always heat up a screw driver to reflow the solder to make a good connection and correct the problem.
Before throwing tons of money into fuel pumps or other parts, check the main relay first.
Thanks for watching and subscribe especially if this video helped you out.

Hello All and thanks Ray for the guide on this repair. I followed the instructions and was successful in starting my vehicle again. I did run into an issue though..........
In an effort to fit the fuel relay back into it's plastic housing underneath the steering wheel, I inadvertently brushed the solder joints up against the metal adjacent to the it. This in turn caused a small/brief flash of sparks on the relay. i fitted the relay safely back in the housing and was surprised power was running to the unit at all with the key out of the ignition. I examined the relay and did not spot any damages from this incident.
So now here is my issue:
    1. vehicle will not start (not surprising)
    2. I have examined the driver side fuses and fuses under the hood (passenger side) and none show to be blown.
Where might the short be and how should i repair it?
Is there a fuse in another location I should check?
Is the best place to check for short circuits the brown harness/clip?
Any recommendations would be extremely appreciated.
    Thank you

Sounds like the relay might be shot after shorting it out, at this point you might need a new relay. Hopefully, you have solved the problem since you posted your comment?

RaysFabShop hey thank you for your reply! I did swap out the fuel relay but came to find out that the sudden short burned out my ACG(or agc perhaps) fuse under the hood. I replaced that 15 a fuse and things started right up. dodged a bullet :-)

Next time, don't plug the relay into the wiring harness while maneuvering it into its mounting position. Plug it in after it has been secured and the chances of shorting something out are essentially zero.

"was running to the unit at all with the key out of the ignition." Terminal #1 of the Relay is fed by power from the battery by way of the underhood fuse box.

Amazing! Thank you for this. My 1991 Accord (100k miles) would not start recently. Checked the fuses and all are ok. Replaced; starter, alternator (and drive belt), distributor cap, wires, plugs, and even the battery. It drove well for 3 days then died AFTER ALL OF THOSE NEW PARTS! Will be changing the relay. Thanks again for the informative video! I also used solder to fix the power door locks relay. Looks like this is the same exact procedure.

    1992 Accord relay test:
Battery positive to #6 terminal. Negative to #8. Check continuity (continuous) between 5 &7. If good, do next check; otherwise replace/fix relay.
Positive to 5, negative to 2. Light between 1&3. If good, do next check; otherwise replace/fix relay.
Positive 3, negative 8. Continuity light between #5 & #7. If good, relay is fine; otherwise replace/fix relay.
Use alligator clips on ends of two wires. Clip terminals using clips.
You also need continuity tester (has light).
Follow instructions above for the 91/92/maybe 90 too, Accord only. Maybe also 93,94 (not sure). If part number at AutoZone is same for all years, then should be okay to test.
This is my contribution to keeping accords alive.

Seeing how to rebuild these relays is really helpful. Thank you.
However, a word of caution about adding solder like this. The original solder appears to have a higher melting point than what was being added, which probably means that they are significantly different alloys (most likely the original is lead-silver while the new is lead-tin). Mixing them will produce yet another alloy, which is almost always more brittle than either original. In other words, I am skeptical of the long-term reliability of these new solder joints. This problem can be somewhat mitigated by either removing most of the original solder (with fluxed copper braid or a "solder sucker") before applying the new solder or carefully re-flowing just the original solder (use some flux if it's wetting surfaces poorly). That being said, the above mixture will obviously work way better than a joint that is already cracked. :)

The joints on the PGM-FI main relay circuit board assembly are rather large. Instead of using a small, sharp tip or filing the tip on the iron to a point, i would choose a 1/4-inch (6 mm) chisel tip to dump a lot of heat into the joint quickly, thus reducing chances of overheating the circuit board traces and the components.. If you have an industrial soldering station, choose a 700°F (370°C) tip or set the soldering station to 700°F (370°C). Clean the tip by lightly wiping it on a wet sponge before proceeding and use Sn63 eutectic rosin core solder, the type that is used for electronics prototyping work. If you use lead-free solder, the iron temperature may need to be increased to about 800°F.

Hi, in my car, a honda Civic now replaced a new fuel pump and got another AC pump relay, but unfortunately there is still nothing! I turn the key and do not click on the relay and the pump does not go but if you think of a car then it starts, there is a click and the pump goes. would not receive AC power from the relay ?? what should I look first of all?so if Ac is good relay, and the auto, ignition does not leave yet onto him I get it and nowhere nothing! check engine lamp secular one,but neither ac click, neither ac pump murmur no! security it's all right.

You can also test the relay and the harness. Justanswer dot com has a main relay test that was done for a 1991 Accord. Somebody else already paid for the information, though you can read the responses.
Do a search engine search for : justanswer 1991 Honda Accord DX main relay
Civic probably has different checks than Accord, since I think the relay has different pins numbers in different locations.
But you can check the relay before and after soldering using the test sequence provided by justanswer.
Also, eBay may sell junk relays (bad relays maybe found in dumpster at factory), so probably best to go to AutoZone and buy a new one (lifetime warranty too), the price is three times as much as eBay.
