  • Sometimes we take measurements, and sometimes we're off by a little bit. How far off? Does it make sense to just use a number? Shouldn't we use something that tells us how far off we are relative to the true value? Yes we should, hence, percent error. Take a look and I'll show you what I mean.

What is the use of differentiation while calculating errors(for eg. parallel resistance error calculation requires differentiation)Can you please tell how?

Quick question wouldnt using the absolute value signs actual be getting rid of useful information? By getting a postive value you would know the experimental is higher than the theorectical. If you get a negative value you would then know that your experimental value is less than your theoretical value. If you know the sign of the value you can more accurately explain sources of error etc.

I thought it was AV - EV/AVx100%? This formula you show is backwards?? Can you explain why? AV - Actual Value, EV - Estimated Value. In this case wouldn't 6.12 be the estimated value? Why isn't it in the Estimated Value spot using the formula I was taught? Could I get some clarification, please and thank you? :)

Sir my question to you is that if we need to add errors or multiply two errors for eg. (3-+5)*(4-+6) where -+
denotes the error, then how will we solve this do we have to still consider the sign or does it become (12+-30)?

ooh, i'm not really sure. i assume we just follow the rules for sig figs for both values.

Hi, i will answer to the best of my knowleadge.
When you muliply measurments with errors what you do is to consider the maximum and minimun values you can obtain and from that you get the error. Like the following exaple: (20+-2) *(30-+3).
Max value of the operation will come from the multiplication of both maximum values, which are (20+2)*(30+3)= 726
Minimum value will come from both minimums (20-2)*(30-3)=513
Now that you have both min and max values of the outcome, your mesure will be in the middle and the error will be de difference between the middle and the max and min. So in this case: (726+513)/2= 619.5 and (726-619.5)=(619.5-513)= 106.5
      so the answer is (20+-2) * (30-+3) = 619.5 +- 106.5.
Note that mutilplication with errors expands the error a lot, while addition or substraction have a much smaller distortion.
Same procedure applies to divition but to consider which is the smalles outcome you divide min/max and to get the maximum outcome you do max/min.
