This is one of those rare Sonic tracks where bass, DAC, and noise are simply not enough. The square are what truly make this. Speaking of, I had no idea the “piano” at the beginning of each loop combined FM and PSG sounds.
Inthis theme the Bass, DAC and noise are not enough because it's a Yun Senoue's track, composed without the Masato Nakamura's style. As a bassist, Masa always used the bassline as the lead, and the other composers followed his style when the Sonic 3 OST were composed (with the exception of the MJ team tracks). Yun was a little more experimental. As a guitarrist, he just tries to experiment on the leads (for example, in this one usd the PSG as the lead in some momments), and that usually lets the bass on a second plane. So that's the thing, diffrent composers means different styles, and in this case means slap and fingerstyle bass vs clunky bass.
@@TheSuperPlayer707 Fancy meeting you here! The actual composer of this theme is Tatsuyuki Maeda, who isn't as well known as Senoue. Maeda's work in the Genesis is heavy on the bass (low-end), echo, and PSG (both square waves and noise).
@@BouncyGlowsMusicRoom wow, you're pretty accurate back tracing the composers hehehe... And yeah, I'm here and I like the detail that we're now the both subbed in Caphtia's channel. By the way, I heard your rearranges of the Sonic 3 beta music but didn't commented them, so I going to use this occasion to say that were pretty damn good.
@@jtg55 Only problem: PSG 3 and PSG 2 usually need to share a frequency. Otherwise, PSG 3's noise sounds very low, more like Marble Zone than the hi-hat it's usually used for.
@Frank Truth PSG = 8bit wave channel in this case. The one labeled 3 is noise, the others are square. In many cases PSG 2 is sacrificed to give more frequencies to the noise channel, from 3 to the note limits.
The way it loops back to the start of the theme sends chills through me. It impacts me as if to say "Don't faulter yet! You're still going strong and hey, who says you can't some fun during this adventure to save the day?"
I love how channel 0 and channel 4 are so calming and soothing, then suddenly out of nowhere comes the cool, slightly menacing baseline and drums of channel 1 and DAC. I love it!
I heard this a ton of times, but can't pass over the satisfaction of listening this progression over and over again: begins on 4:50, continues on 6:24 and ends on 7:57.
It seems a smart way to make use of chords while still allowing sound effects to blend with the music. Since it requires at least two channels to produce a chord, they can interrupt the second channel (The echo one) to play the sound effects, so the whole song melody or beat is not interrupted when many sound effects are played at once. For example, a Jump sound effect might use one or two of the PSG channels, Rings could use the secondary channel of the melody chord, and for other effects, they could use bass channel as a last resource. The sounds effects will still play and the music will keep going without losing the main structure.
Traveler's Tales did an excellent job on this game for the concept's poor quality; this includes the soundtrack. Also nice to know that asking for more outlandish games on the genesis is on the table.
@@Embyreal I knew that long ago, what I didn't know at the time was that Jun Senoue worked on Sonic 3D. Thought Green Grove and Gene Gadget were written by someone else.

0:51 tbh pretty disappointed you didn't do a solo of channel 2+3 for this part of the song. It's pretty much my favorite part, always wanted to hear it localized.
Lot of syncopation going on to create this faux reverb. All combined, just makes me love this track ever so much more. They had master class composers working on this soundtrack. A+ work.
It's not an in oscilloscope form, but it's still deconstructed by them here: ua-cam.com/video/LctE8-FGPqQ/v-deo.html Now if they just did an Act 2 version of it 🥰🥰🥰
It must he one of the few times where the DAC and Channel 1's instrumentation delineates from the normal track somewhat. It kinda adds to the mistique in a way.
0:17 That sounds a bit Launch Basey but anyways I like this song. I'll probably have to look it up and if I remember right, this is what Sonic 3 was going to look like until Sega went "No, this is dumb. Scrap it half way through development" and this game is probably what they made and then finished it to make Sonic 3 Blast. Also that bass (which sorta look like the rock formations in Hill Top) and DAC doesn't overide the melody but it hits hard. Good theme, good deconstruction, yet to zone (hope it's good).
The Saturn version uses Redbook audio. The audio layers are all baked together into CD tracks, so you'd have to completely reconstruct the music tracks by locating all of the DAW samples Richard Jacques used back in 1996 and reassembling them with a good ear in order to do Oscilloscope deconstructions like these.

@@edwardclark6731 I doubt that took up more space than the original Sega chant in Sonic 1,2, 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. I've seen a lot of people saying how the playback is because the samples are compressed but I don't think the crunchy nature of the samples is wholly because of compression. I think the drivers are just stopping mid playback and that is why you can see straight lines in the middle of the DAC waveforms

I think channel 1 and DAC were just missing PSG 3. Those high hihats are what truly complete the beat.
I had no idea the lead was the PSG all this time. my brain is going to explode.
The PSG could be cool when it's well used,
Take the notes from Channel 1 and put'em in PSG 2 and then silence all the FM channels. Bam. 8-bit Rusty Ruin 1.
