What's up friends! Yesterday I asked you, on the community tab, what cocktail you thought I would make today. Many of you got it right but shout out to JMcc who was the first to guess it right! Also, honorable mention to aeenai for calling it the Papa Doble. Cheers!

I think it was dubbed the "Papa Doble" for the two parts of rum in it, although Hemmingway did also double-fist drinks quite often. Either way, he _definitely_ drank a LOT!

This is the best Hemingway daiquiri I've tasted - it's already noted down as my standard recipe. My puritan mind kinda struggle with the addition of simple sirup, but I really can't argue with the results.

Great video as always, one of my top 3 Cocktail channels here on YT, classy, to the point, great "cinematography". :)
Btw, one of my favourite drinks I discovered last year was a riff on the Hemingway, "Hemingway's Cats" from Sother Teague's "Im Just here for the Drinks", which is also one of my favourite bar books.
    - 2oz Mezcal
    - 0.5oz Maraschino
    - 0.5oz lime juice
    - 0.5oz agave syrup
    - 0.25oz grapefruit juice
    - 2 dashes Scrappy's Black Lemon Bitters
Perfect balance for me, less juice but still present, for the Mezcal i splitted 50:50 Vida with San Cosme so I don't have only intense smoke, worked great, the agave syrup is also the perfect change in this case, great, dry Daiquiri.

Amazing. I tried the Hemingway Daiquiri a while back and thought the maraschino was too upfront, so added more grapefruit, but then thought it was too juicy so gave up. This video made me want to revisit it, and lo and behold, it was balanced and delicious ! I think you nailed it with the 1/4 maraschino and the grapefruit peel, adding it to the rotation !

If you want a drier and more tart daiquiri, omit the simple syrup, add another quarter oz of grapefruit juice, and add a quarter oz of Aperol. Thank me later.

My favorite daiquiri I've made took inspiration from tiki and used a blend of different rums. I don't remember the exact spec I used but it was something like Smith & Cross, Rhum Barbancourt 4yr, Flor de Caña 7 plus simple and lime. Absolutely delicious. Using both Jamaican and agricole rum adds a ton of complexity even without any liqueurs or bitters or other additions.

  • @marvingreen7441
    @marvingreen7441 3 роки тому

Yeah, thank for that suggestion, man.. I too am a daiquiri enthusiast, I like the simplicity of just a perfect combination 2:1+1 with all the stuff you can add or subtract. I used to make a slightly different recipe for this drink, but I didn’t really like it. It called for 2oz of rum agricole and it just didn’t work well with maraschino, imo. Also, 1/4oz of grapefruit juice wasn’t enough to make it interesting, it was just a bit odd instead. When I don’t have Havana Anejo3, I like a combination Bacardi Carta Blanca & Havana Especial, it really makes this drink take a boat in Caribbean and just take of to the world.. It’s not the first time for you to find a great riff to a well known tune man, I dig this channel.

Made some Hemingway videos a while ago as well, not as beautifully recorded as yours, but it always give me a big smile, live the tarter and less sweeter 'balance' if this one :) Fun how opinions and palates differ... :D

My only exposure to this drink was a few years back at a bar in Halifax - a Cuban couple came in and ordered them. I don't think the bartender had ever made it because he looked somewhat confused - but his effort was rejected by the couple (it was much redder than this). A second bartender came out and made a different version, hers was a darker orange color, and that was also rejected; they ended up ordering something else. From that I figured it must be a super complicated drink but it doesn't seem to be. Neither one that was served that night looked like this one so I am guessing neither barkeep had ever made it.

This is a beautiful cocktail! Where I’m from, daiquiris are served as some sort of rum slush in different flavors; the most popular flavor being strawberry. Could you maybe explain to me why? Is this correct way to serve a daiquiri?

I know it’s been seven months but I feel I just have to post this.. I saved this recipe when it came out on your channel but for some reason I didn’t make it .. until today. I’ve used Bacardi carta blanca instead of Havana, otherwise I stuck to your riff. I have to say that’s not the first recipe I’ve tried , still it’s only the second time and the reason for that was the disappointment I had when I made it for the first time, using different (“official “) rates that were clearly off balance. I was disappointed that Ernest (yes, I read books and I admire his) would have liked this drink .. but who knows what the balance was in his time .. Anyways, this balance is perfect for me and I really appreciate the sweet tartness of Maraschino and grapefruit with the rum, it’s a great daiquiri. PS: I’ve started to make mixed drinks after watching some episodes of How to drink channel several years ago, then I’ve adopted recipes from The Educated Barfly and after that I found your channel that gave me some creative ideas I wouldn’t think of by myself. Thank you for that.
