john brydels I keep asking myself the same thing every time I try to decipher this movie. After looking at some more interviews, I'm not even sure Paul knows the meaning.
It's a stoner detective comedy. It has commentary on the 70s, paranoia, civil rights and things like that but at its most basic it's just a comedy film
I saw it as a stoner (doc) trying to cope with the loss of his ex girlfriend ( shasta, and when i say loss i mean real loss, death) Got this interpretation from a video on youtube and i really like to see it this way
I hate PTA so much, the guy has so much false modesty that it kills me. I didn’t even get these details and allusions after watching the movie and he plainly says it’s a a pretty straight forward movie. I wonder what he thinks about the other movies that come out of Hollywood then.
Jesus bodyguards with M16's may be the greatest collection of words I've ever heard.
... and we do it every day. Crazy, huh?
Didn't even see the jesus bodyguards upon my first 3 viewings of the film...PTA, what a master
I wouldn't have noticed them chasing a patient if he hadn't said.
Dr Parnassus Me too. The man is really at the top of his game
The Jesus guards are also in the cinema room
This is the best that we're gonna get for a new PTA audio commentary, are we?
Sucks ass, don't it
The Boogie Nights Blu Ray has a full commentary which id recommend
Seriously!
Watch Boogie Nights Commentary, where PTA and Mark Whalberg are just bullshitting and talking nonesense, it's slightly insane.
Did he really say it's a straightfoward movie !!!!! wtf
+dav 2one He corrected himself, he then said "straightforward style."
I laughed out loud when he said that
@@Ryan_Ek2 yes, he referred to lack of cinema tricks..
Beautiful film - it would make a nice double bill with Altman's classic, Long Goodbye
the film is full of amazing details
I spent a few months in Ojai, and it changed my life.
I need to rewatch this movie
His scorpio pendant was perfect.
Indeed!
maybe I just didn't see the right angle, but those are uzi's not m16's
Isn't that Thomas Pynchon from 1:00-1:04 sitting down and being served dinner?
ummmm, no
We're all will be looking for Pynchon as we see the film. #FindPynchon
Turns out that it's actually actor Charley Morgan. But the question remains, is that Thomas Pynchon?
Brent Primus that's great.
+Brent Primus He only has a handful of acting credits. One can only hope.
What a tease! Didn’t even play the entire scene :(((((
"with their m16's"
what was the point?

I actually thought it is more of a love movie in it's core
I saw it as a stoner (doc) trying to cope with the loss of his ex girlfriend ( shasta, and when i say loss i mean real loss, death)

I would argue that most PTA films don't really have a point.

He said straight forward style
This is awful
he called it a "looney bin"? How sad to be so cold and superficial
That's how they refer to it in the book and movie.
That’s what they called a mental hospital back then
