how to get rich in america
1. find something that's free
2. start selling it
3. make people unable to get it for free
4. PROFIT
Not just in America, unfortunately.
is this the whole idea behind 'Clima Change isn't real) is trump trying to sell us air?!
_Ahhh hello comrades ;)_
Thats the saddest fact I've ever seen.
Well summarized.
Take bottled water. In some places it's a necessity but in others it's the same thing you get from pipes but extra stale and full of microplastics.
Of all the things that happened that year, you will be happy to know Barry Myers never became the Head of NOAA.
Who's the weather dude that snapped in the beginning? He was awesome, I hope he still got that job!
Only good thing happened in this quarantine was I found John Oliver. He"s a gem.
I just about lost it when he started impersonating Eddie Vedder.

"Reyling on other countries [...] models places america in a weak and subservient position."
American hubris at its best.
But unfortunately that is nothing unusal
It's 'hubris,' alright, but hubris which I'm sure somehow justifies pouring taxpayer money into the pockets of private industry. These guys aren't morons, they don't care about America or Americans or any people for that matter, they just want power and money, and will use any argument shamelessly in order to do so.
@@mikespongili8254 Right, it is exploiting "patriotism" and nationalism in order to brainwash people into believing that only things from the USA are good enough for the USA. Which is ironic because everything we have comes from China.

Honestly, "you can't trust Accuweather" is one of the least surprising John Oliver arguments I've ever seen. I grew up where the company headquarters was, and a look out the window tended to be more accurate than the forecast.
i hereby nominate this the most useless comment of today
It's funny, I never realised before that every in-built weather app on every phone I've ever had has been accuweather.
I thought this was going to be about the increasing unpredictability and severity of weather due to climate change. ...turns out that didn't even need to be mentioned. John oliver is the debbie downer Queen!
Oh, LWT: Start out sounding nice, then corporations ruin it.
What DON'T corporations ruin? They're fueled by greed, greed and MORE GREED! In the eternal words of Lewis Black, they are "PIGGY PIGGY FUCK, PIGGY PIGGY!".
That seems to be America in general.

It was the fact that he even brought it up that gave me the creeps. If you know you could’ve saved a couple dozen people’s lives and you didn’t, why would you even mention it?

As a meteorologist, I thank you for bringing this out into the open, Last Week Tonight.
Good news. He's out of the picture.
"Nov. 21, 2019 , 3:25 PM
Barry Myers, the former CEO of AccuWeather Inc., withdrew late yesterday his hot-button nomination to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its 12,000 employees, citing health concerns.
The full Senate never voted on President Donald Trump's embattled NOAA pick, even though a split Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee sent his nomination to the floor three times in party-line decisions."
Same.
As a storm chaser, I second this. It is infuriating that people wish to profit and make unavailable something that should be public. The fact some people are even TRYING to make it so you have to pay for something like, say, a tornado warning, is absolutely horrifying and deeply infuriating. Weather data and warnings should be FREE TO THE PUBLIC, END of discussion. That is NOT something that should be warped into something to be a profit off of. -_-

That’s why we have been on 4g tech for longer then 3g
@@ONEIL311 There's a lot he can do actually. What Accuweather wants to do is put the NOAA weather models and radar data behind paywalls, so only the big private corporations like Weather Channel, cable networks like NBC and Fox and Accuweather can afford the data. Weather enthusiasts, storm chasers, scientists, and scholars will no longer have free and easy access to this data, which means you will put your trust in large corporations to provide an accurate and clear forecast (which won't happen because every company will create their own warning system and create trademarks and copyrights for their weather, and have to pay for the premium data plans they create. Having a central agency has provided us with the best access to weather data anywhere in the world, and without, that give citizens access to their offices, models, and storm chaser information and classes for budding meteorlogists.

@@ridanann I know you're joking but I'm gonna mention for people out of the loop (and because I just like talking about it) that "Midwest" means the middle of the western hemisphere (where the Americas are along with the very western tips of Europe and Africa) and "Middle East" means the middle of the eastern hemisphere (where Asia, Oceania, and most of Africa and Europe are). But I should note and Midwest/Middle East refers only to the northern half of the hemisphere. So the Midwest ends up being the states roughly in the center of the US (including Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and a few other surrounding states) and the Middle East ends up being where western Asia meets Africa (although realistically the center of the eastern hemisphere is further east, kind of around western China, but I think the people who named it thought the dividing line between the western and eastern hemisphere was in the Atlantic ocean when really it's slightly to the east of Spain and England).

John Oliver: Actually, give me a moment...
Project DJ Fuck, that’s actually a kinda upsetting to think about.

Honestly, just the fact that there are so many climate change deniers out there has also been a big reason why the weather isn’t considered a ‘safe’ subject anymore.

“No there aren’t! Climate change is a hoax!”

As one of those weather nerds he briefly mentions, I'm really glad that John Oliver covered this. I've been worried about this ever since he was nominated, but as John says, it's difficult to get people interested in talking about a mundane topic like government weather agencies, especially when all the other crap is going on. I swear half of the scandals he's involved with are just cover to distract people from stuff like this.

At this point is more difficult to find someone who doesn't have a conflic of interests a the top of a government agency.
It starts at the top with Trump currently, and once folks see he can get away with it, they figure they can, too. One look at his current and former cabinet post holders can confirm that.
@Jake Galler Some of them did. If you think "the problem existed before trump" is a rational dismissal of the problem, or a defense of intentionally making it worse, then you GTFO.
@Jake Galler
"I know for a fact"
How do you know that?
"You think conflict of interest began with Trump?"
Now I can't read minds, but I doubt he thinks this, as he used the word "currently" which indicates that he talks about the present which suggests that at other times there were also conflicts of interest, but back than it wasn't Trump putting corrupt people into office.
@Jake Galler
"Not sure what that currently gibberish means"
Ah than that explains how you didn't understand his comment.
Currently means: "at the present time"
So if he says something along the lines of [currently the conflict of interest starts from the top aka Trump appointing people who have a conflict of interest] then that means that at the present there are so many people in government with a conflict of interest cause Trump appoints people with a conflict of interest.
I hope that helps. So he doesn't claim that Trump appointed Dick Cheney or somehow appointed people in the nixon administration as that would be pretty absurd as he wasn't in politics back that.
(Btw the last part was brought to you by sarcasm. I know you didn't mean that but it is equally absurd as what you understood.
He didn't write "conflict of interest started with trump" (as I guess that's what you somehow understood), but that [at the moment the conflict of interest is brought to you by Trump].
@Jake Galler"but people like you labeled them conspiracy theorists"
You pretty much labeled yourself as stupid and blind at same time with this comment. What Tony R said, is "actually" on point. There arent many administrations in the US-history where you can say what he said with such certainity as with the actual administration. Stating this does by no means negate the fact, that a) corruption has always
existed and b) people have always talked about corruption
You in contrary are defending unspecified conspiracy theories which are (my assumption) unlikely to be favored here, but have never been part of any substantial critic of
corruption, especially when we are talking about big corporations connected to the government. This was always the area of leftleaning critics (who, by the way, did talk alot
about literally any case you mentioned). Who do you think was watching the daily show back then? Exactly, liberals and leftists or whoever is somewhat either one or other. And as for new and younger viewers, what do you expect from them?

@@aurorawolfe6060 Trump has been doing that with a lot of government agencies. Getting rid of them would be too difficult and draw a lot of attention, so he guts them to the point where they're useless.
It's a brilliant strategy; make government as ineffective as possible, then suggest the private companies take over as a viable alternative, thus privatizing a vital source of information, meaning people may (and eventually will) start having to pay for the service. And then said private firms will fight hard with lobbying and politicians to ensure that we cannot go back to the old system.

It's so unnerving how so many Americans see cooperation as weakness.
Yeah and the reality is we couldn't be self sustaining even if we wanted to, and we don't. Our current president just wants to take from countries and not defend them as allies, in turn turning them against us. Now the world may not be falling on us (yet), but the precedent has been set and most of us can already tell where it's headed. The sad part is, we can change this, but given the support still in place for this bs, it wont be worked on any time soon.
Everything is seen s zero-sum in the States.
It's not alone, sadly. A lot of countries are turning away from international cooperation and institutions that helped everyone's lives become better and safer. Britain is the big example, but all the nationalist populist stuff in lots of countries has a similar attitude.

As someone who had the pleasure of interning for the NWS, this piece meant a lot to me. The people working at the NWS are underpaid and overworked and yet almost all of them friendly, devoted to their work, and hardworking in general.
Also, most meteorologists I studied with don't even think Accuweather is that, well, accurate. I did research on the efficacy of that 45-day forecast and it was worse than using historical averages.
I assumed that that was what that 45 day forecast was. Historical averages combined with a tiny bit of contextual awareness.
I hate when AccuWeather pops up on my phone automatically. WhatTheForecast is going on there.
Also I freaking love the NWS and the NHC; this was my first hurricane season down here in Florida and I was tuning into the NHC Facebook lives every day and looking up the forecasts on their website. I felt safe knowing who was doing the forecasting, and that they could also teach so well that I came out of it knowing so much more about hurricanes.
