Hyve Synth Tutorial - 60 poly analog portable synth
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 кві 2017
- This is the Hyve Touch Synthesiser, designed by Skot Wiedmann. It's currently campaigning on Kickstarter here:
www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
The Hyve Touch Synth is very unique, with it's portable form factor, lovely design, and 60 polyphonic analog architecture. It runs on a 9v battery, or with a power adapter. The sound is an analog square-ish signal. But with a tad of filter on the expressive touch controls, and the hexagon chord friendly layout it makes it highly playable. More so than what you would expect.
Here's a tutorial on the preassembled Hyve. How to play it. What it sounds like. And a number of "jams" or improvised sessions, in combination with mostly a reverb and delay.

sounds fantastic with the strymons. i have a feeling it would sound real good paired with the pocket operators.
That is a compelling thought. I should try it with the Tonic!
I sense a follow-up video :)
Red Means Recording even a Timbrewolf sounds acceptable through fx though.
Well, everything sounds fantastic with a strymon, doesn't it?
I'd like to know what sounds bad with Strymons :D
I think if he would have ditched the synth component and made this a creative and expressive midi / cv oriented device, the market would have been much larger, and people could have found a lot more in the way of playable possibilities. I think the kickstart funding would have been exponentially greater than having this device be a playable synth. IMHO
No-Motion I got one and like the oscillators (with help from some effects). But I miss not having any cv or midi out. It could be much more useful if it was *also* a controller.
The raw oscillators really evoke those old JRPG scores.
This is just sooo cool! Love the layout. Makes music theory really approachable!
Watching you touching those electric things became something like meditation to me. I started with your volca fm tutorial and here i am watching you the 5th evening. Keep on doing what you do.
love your enthusiasm and your videos! thanks so much for making such great and cool content!
really well done. and i like the idea with the mirror.
Russel Brand and Bob Ross had a baby, and he's really into synths...
+OGbrundle dad and daddy. Famlily 👨👨👦
No way, man! Its Cuckoo. He's better than both!
@@truecuckoo OMG +400 for #brundleref!
If Russel Brand and Bob Ross had a baby he WOULD be really into synths.
I was skeptical you could make it sound good, but then i realized, never doubt cuckoo. beautiful
Oh god, the top half is beautiful! So much chord jamming up there
very well demonstrated. I am enlightened...
I get some kind of accordion feeling to it.
Kontext I thought exactly the same. It definitely conjures up some Francophilic vibes...
I consider the accordion one of the parents of the synthesizer anyway (beneath the church organ). Loud and full sounds that can emulate a whole orchestra.
We need a hexagonal keyboard OP-1
Cool. I'd love to see a bigger version of this.
Amazing! It sounds like a chiptune soundtrack out of the box! Love it 😛
love this rewiew man, ure awesome man
This is sweet. I just wish it was a controller as well. Cause then the possibility could be expanded even more. Nice vid
Thanks. Yes it would be sweet if it could be a controller. With the Hacker version it can potentially become a controller. But then it requires a lot of custom work, and engineering skills.
thesuperadventurer yeah, too right. This is crying out to become a MIDI controller!
the axis 64 is a midi controller with harmonic table layout like this
this is excellent ... you are so great musician
Great reviews, subbed
honestly who needs a facecam when you can just use a mirror, so smart!!
Also the left & right option kinda blew my mind
Looks and sounds great. Hilarious regarding the lotion insight, can def hear a difference!
Wow, really impressed you could do the major scale on the hexagonal keys. I wish these actually existed somewhere I could try out playing for myself.
Yes, as someone already mentioned, that's basically an Accordion without the bellows...
I was just looking at discontinued Axis-49 hexagonal controller with the harmonic layout the other day. I don't need another synth, but as a controller it would be cool.
Woah, watching this with headphones is SUPER weird.
I just got one of these from someone selling off all his gear last night, and it is pretty amazing. I wish it had more than just the one sound on board, but there are ways to expand and work with what it has. Sort of like a super cool hackable synth-accordion. Very expressive. A more affordable DIY version of the Ciat-Lonbarde Tocate.....?
+cuckoomusic really lovely sounds on your demo performances, man. Thanks for the demo!
The Hyve guy should meet the Atmegatron guy. One has a nice input device with a placeholder synth engine, and the other has a nice synth engine with no keys. I realize that what the Hyve does can't be transmitted over CV or midi, but if they were built into the same device, the Hyve could directly control some of the Atmegatron's many many parameters... (would need to limit the polyphony, but ... otherwise it seems like a win)
Also, harmonic table layout FTW. I looove my Axis-49, and I'm tempted to get a Hyve just to have another device with a harmonic table layout. It's great for jamming, and the Hyve's sound should be even more versatile when pumped through a kaoss pad or something.
I've been looking at the kickstarter for this since the day it went up, and it's tempting in much the same way as a Continuum Fingerboard. Only, like, dramatically cheaper and smaller and chiptune-y. But I like chiptunes, so that's not a bad thing.
Agreed the analog sound is good though perhaps a bit one-dimensional (this obviously won't replace a Moog, etc.). What would be amazing IMO would be to buy the Hacker package and hook up to a Mutable Instruments "Elements" or "Rings" PCB, using the hexagonal capacitor section to control parameters.
This is cool. I just stumbled upon this and I know it it a few years old. The new Arturia Microfreak’s keyboard is exactly like this. The touch surface is exactly alike. Wild.
0:08 Man, you don't need a synth! :)) You sounds like one of these already! )
Hey Cuckoo, love the video! I would love it if you could show us how to do those awesome sounds you make!
Thank you! The sounds in this video, you mean? This box only has got one sound. It's a square'ish sound, with a tad of filter from the touch input. Then I'm sending it to a reverb and delay. I've got some tutorials on the Analog Keys and other synths as well.
very lovely!
the harmonic table layout is allowing you to think kind of like a guitar player in some ways. like a fretboard
Awesome video, reminds me of Commodore 64 sound tracks! Sweet
Dude those sound affects are the same shit me and my boys used to make all the time back in the day. Especially when we got stoned fucking with each other lmao. Your videos are the shit cause of that reason. Don’t ever stop
seems like it may be a candidate for trying out with and envelope follower--like the one on the analog heat--
also an interesting possibility of using it with the b9, s9, mel9, kr synth9 by ehx, to blend in other tones or replace the master.
the bass seemed a little beefier than the mids and highs--probably because of the harmonic content of the pure waveforms...a little compression or eq, or even a mid-boosting fuzz like a big muff I think might define this guy.
love, love love how small it is. a great companion to the a4, methinks.
You keep introducing me to so many new impressive synths, first you got me on the Volca bandwagon, then the SQ1, then the BASTL THYME...and now this, I am so tempted to add this to my setup, thank you for helping me get back into music again your channel is always a highlight for me
Thanks! Happy to hear that, mate. ❤️
really interesting! love its warm sound! and great as always, cuckoo!
+Jesús Dawaher Bakhos thanks!!
Really cool
It's a great sound! It is an accordion. Look at a picture of an accordian and then look at the Hyve.
Very very expressive. I wonder if in the future we will see hive controllers from Skot ?.👊 woohdisssh !!!
Would love to see this paired with your Continuum for a hyper expressive sesh
When I heard the sound of the synth at the start I thought you were going to do the ominous Donkey Kong opening! Dun da dun-dun- drrr drrrrr! :D
The most beautiful design of a synth...
I gotta say Mr. Cukoo I was pretty let down when I saw this on an earlier vid. But wow! so much useability! IDK about the $500 smackers on the pricetag though...UGH! What kinda waveforms does it generate though? I Do love the kinda squelchieness of it. Hold on Baby I've gotta lube up to play right!
How beautiful. Perhaps it should be a bit bigger tho
fantastically creative product with a really innovative way to play it. also, great playing cuckoo! thanks for showing it to us!
It would be cool if you could do microtonal increments with it.
12 tuning points. you can do microtuning but only one octave and those same notes get spread around the octaves.
Philip Glass needs this now.
Hi Cuckoo, great demonstration. Any info on how to tune it? I believe that's mentioned in the kickstarter
+Spoogy Mulder Hi thanks! I don't know how the tuning works.
just wondered would you do the modal crAFT synth or not much time for it really?
Oh, that's gorgeous!
7:17 *Brains booting up*
7:23 *Brains ready*
7:26 *Whips out major scale on an instrument he never played with a layout he never saw*
Mr Cuckoo, great video, man! And a great demo - it is ultimately what prompted me to back Skot Wiedmann's campaign on Kickstarter, and pledge for a fully built Hyve synth... I think I squeaked in with less than 24 hours remaining! :-) I am so looking forward to its arrival in November. This video is also the reason I subscribed to your UA-cam channel. Just love your demos and tunes - keep up the good work, dude!
*(thumbs)*
+Adrian Goodswen thank you so much Adrian! I'm so happy to hear all of this! Skot is really special. He's got that extra talent and dedication :)
From what I've gleaned so far, I totally agree. It would be nice to see Skot put that skill and dedication to other new instruments ... all in good time of course! As a humble wannabe musician, I've only just recently started to dabble with electronic instruments. Discovering the Hyve when I did was splendidly fortuitous timing, and it was just too unique an item to pass up!
I can appreciate some of the less positive points that some people have brought up vis-à-vis the Hyve's sonic limitation, but for me that is part of its charm. It's also more of a challenge to see what one can produce from a limited sonic palette. The addition of a couple of Strymons certainly helps! ;-)
Interesting to hear Cuckoo with a cold! This is worth watching for th ebit through the reverb and delay. Beautiful.
like kaossillator?
Hi cuckoo,
I wonder how you record the Hyve in stereo. Is that a 3.5mm stereo jack splitting into two mono TS jack in the video?
Yeah. The hyve outputs individually panned notes in stereo. It's a bit tricky to control the panning with manual finger precision, so it helps to pan the signals a little closer to the centre. I find it fun to use one effect on the Right signal, and another effect on the Left signal, and then put them together in something closer to mono.
hope that it is affordable after the kickstarter campaign
you are awesome and this thing is awesome!
magic device! it should become a midi out!
8:54 Totally house music!!!
Like a digital accordian!
this begs for an external filter. i think it would be perfect through the ext-in of my roland se-02
I can't find it on the internet. Where I can buy it Cuckoo-San ? (in france)
Maxcello.
HyveSynth.com
One finger chords. Cool
is it available now?
How many oscillators does it have ?? I love your videos !!!
Круто, чувак. Hi from Russia!
This is beauty in simplicity.
The tone reminds me of a harmonica
That's what I'm thinking too, it's not only the sound but the upper part reminds me of the Harmonium or Bandeonion (or whatever the Piazolla one is called... :-) You could even hold it like this if the plugs weren't on the top side of it, but still possible!
exactly reminds me of a Piazolla tune!
Girolamo Carollo It sounds somewhere between a harmonica and accordion. Harmoniccordion!
weirdest thing i have ever seen... but it sounds so good
well it's just square waves...
if they made a midi controller like this i'd get it
Is the button configuration the same as on a button accordion?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_button_accordion
I'm sure someone's said this already but the hexagon layout is the same as an accordion isn't it? it's only got one sound though which I don't particularly like.
+Tom Edwards I've never tried an accordion with this particular layout. But perhaps the accordions layouts are different in Scandinavia. It's similar, but different ;-) The accordions I've tried are much easier to play semitones chromatically..
This on looks pretty similar - www.accordionlinks.com/graphics/stradella72.gif but there are various different layouts I can find on google. I just remembered that the only one I ever handled went up in fifths. Deffinately looks inspired by an accordion, even the sound is accordionish to my ears. I bet accordionists would get on well with this instrument.
The hive layout would be way better with maybe a larger pad or something. I have tiny hands, so something like this wouldn't be an issue for me, but I could see people with big hands having equally big problems playing this.
Is the tune at 13:30 from a video game? Sounded familiar and awesome!
+nova2wl thanks! No it's just something that popped out of my fingers there and then.
nova2wl sounds like boss dungeon level in any old Zelda game. Nice Cockoo
holy 8bit man!!!
love it!
Great detailed video, thanks! ( It does have a bit of an NES sound, doesn't it? )
You're a great guy
Thank you!! You're the good kind too!
cuckoomusic ❤️
Midi out version please!!
I hope the hacker versions gets 100 supportes so everybody gets two boards... The parts needed are only 20$, so if you can solder the cheepest way to get one (or two ;-) )
I LOVE YOUUUUU ONCE AGAIN
A Bontempi reed organ comes to mind on hearing this. Without the effects the sound is poor.
Hi Cuckoo,
Hallo from ,,Lake Constance''' , after , no, ( allmost at the same time ) i saw your beautifull video, the magical soundheaven brought me a used Hyve via ebay
classified ad , from a german musician...my ,, enzo ''-synth was allredy waiting for getting connectect with it, so i guess.:)) ..all the other videos didn't so much winning my heart for it, but you dit,...once again....thank you very much ! I have one questian, : is there allredy any way, to install a cv out ? ...and please never mind my strange english here ;))
What is the point of 60 polyphony? I don't really get it.
+E-Con Records I think the point is to make it even simpler to construct. Also if you hack it you can probably make even more use of the rich polyphony.
gate and cv would be apreciated, its sounds great, but its non editable patch becomes anoying after a while.

Then wish this hyve will meet great success!
This harmonic table has to get more awareness too. There's also a groove box called du-touch that is played through an hexagonal keyboard. Not on harmonic table from the get go though. But it does have an equally interesting layout.
scot weedman
Loved the doubletake on that :D
These things are such a great design, love the way the hive section is layed out
I luv u
How do you get one?
I think you can't name it "synth" it's more like an organ. Hence it only has one sound with octaves. Did you mention that it is really a "amazing/great product/best product ever/a must have"?
it puts the lotion on the skin D:
Pokémon vibes
I think it would be a much much better product if it had a way to add sounds to it. I mean, even if you can only have one on it at a time, this feels way too limited. Like having a gaming pc where chrome is the only thing you can use.
does it come with lotion!? """Hyve lotion""" :) doesn't sound to appealing. But I'm sold
lotion enhancing
29 people are jealous
But.... a major triad would be to go up right then upwards. No? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Love the strymons, LOVE WAY MORE HOW THE HAND LOTION IMPROVED THE MUSICALITY OF YOUR FINGERS ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️〰🔊〰🔊〰🔊〰🔊〰🔊❤️❤️♥️❤️♥️☺️
A major triad is constructed by thirds: a major third from the root, then a minor third from the third. You're probably thinking that since a major chord is the root, the third, and fifth, you should go up. But it would be a fifth from the third, not the root, so what you said would be a maj7 (no 5) chord instead of the major triad you want.
Forstår du mig hvis jeg skriver på Dansk? haha
+J. H. Jørgensen ja. Kva språk skal eg svare på? Nynorsk eller Svensk?
