Hyve Synth Tutorial - 60 poly analog portable synth

  • This is the Hyve Touch Synthesiser, designed by Skot Wiedmann. It's currently campaigning on Kickstarter here:
    www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
    The Hyve Touch Synth is very unique, with it's portable form factor, lovely design, and 60 polyphonic analog architecture. It runs on a 9v battery, or with a power adapter. The sound is an analog square-ish signal. But with a tad of filter on the expressive touch controls, and the hexagon chord friendly layout it makes it highly playable. More so than what you would expect.
    Here's a tutorial on the preassembled Hyve. How to play it. What it sounds like. And a number of "jams" or improvised sessions, in combination with mostly a reverb and delay.
    More information on the Hyve here:
    / hyvesynthesizer

    sounds fantastic with the strymons. i have a feeling it would sound real good paired with the pocket operators.

    I think if he would have ditched the synth component and made this a creative and expressive midi / cv oriented device, the market would have been much larger, and people could have found a lot more in the way of playable possibilities. I think the kickstart funding would have been exponentially greater than having this device be a playable synth. IMHO

      No-Motion I got one and like the oscillators (with help from some effects). But I miss not having any cv or midi out. It could be much more useful if it was *also* a controller.

    I just got one of these from someone selling off all his gear last night, and it is pretty amazing. I wish it had more than just the one sound on board, but there are ways to expand and work with what it has. Sort of like a super cool hackable synth-accordion. Very expressive. A more affordable DIY version of the Ciat-Lonbarde Tocate.....?

    +cuckoomusic really lovely sounds on your demo performances, man. Thanks for the demo!

  • @ToyKeeper
    @ToyKeeper 7 років тому +2

    The Hyve guy should meet the Atmegatron guy. One has a nice input device with a placeholder synth engine, and the other has a nice synth engine with no keys. I realize that what the Hyve does can't be transmitted over CV or midi, but if they were built into the same device, the Hyve could directly control some of the Atmegatron's many many parameters... (would need to limit the polyphony, but ... otherwise it seems like a win)

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 7 років тому +1

      Also, harmonic table layout FTW. I looove my Axis-49, and I'm tempted to get a Hyve just to have another device with a harmonic table layout. It's great for jamming, and the Hyve's sound should be even more versatile when pumped through a kaoss pad or something.

    • @ToyKeeper
      @ToyKeeper 7 років тому +2

      I've been looking at the kickstarter for this since the day it went up, and it's tempting in much the same way as a Continuum Fingerboard. Only, like, dramatically cheaper and smaller and chiptune-y. But I like chiptunes, so that's not a bad thing.

  • @josephf7306
    @josephf7306 7 років тому +2

    Agreed the analog sound is good though perhaps a bit one-dimensional (this obviously won't replace a Moog, etc.). What would be amazing IMO would be to buy the Hacker package and hook up to a Mutable Instruments "Elements" or "Rings" PCB, using the hexagonal capacitor section to control parameters.

    seems like it may be a candidate for trying out with and envelope follower--like the one on the analog heat--
    also an interesting possibility of using it with the b9, s9, mel9, kr synth9 by ehx, to blend in other tones or replace the master.
    the bass seemed a little beefier than the mids and highs--probably because of the harmonic content of the pure waveforms...a little compression or eq, or even a mid-boosting fuzz like a big muff I think might define this guy.
    love, love love how small it is. a great companion to the a4, methinks.

    Mr Cuckoo, great video, man! And a great demo - it is ultimately what prompted me to back Skot Wiedmann's campaign on Kickstarter, and pledge for a fully built Hyve synth... I think I squeaked in with less than 24 hours remaining! :-) I am so looking forward to its arrival in November. This video is also the reason I subscribed to your UA-cam channel. Just love your demos and tunes - keep up the good work, dude!

    • @VelvetVoice
      @VelvetVoice 6 років тому +2

      From what I've gleaned so far, I totally agree. It would be nice to see Skot put that skill and dedication to other new instruments ... all in good time of course! As a humble wannabe musician, I've only just recently started to dabble with electronic instruments. Discovering the Hyve when I did was splendidly fortuitous timing, and it was just too unique an item to pass up!
      I can appreciate some of the less positive points that some people have brought up vis-à-vis the Hyve's sonic limitation, but for me that is part of its charm. It's also more of a challenge to see what one can produce from a limited sonic palette. The addition of a couple of Strymons certainly helps! ;-)

    Hi cuckoo,
    I wonder how you record the Hyve in stereo. Is that a 3.5mm stereo jack splitting into two mono TS jack in the video?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  6 років тому +1

      Yeah. The hyve outputs individually panned notes in stereo. It's a bit tricky to control the panning with manual finger precision, so it helps to pan the signals a little closer to the centre. I find it fun to use one effect on the Right signal, and another effect on the Left signal, and then put them together in something closer to mono.

      This on looks pretty similar - www.accordionlinks.com/graphics/stradella72.gif but there are various different layouts I can find on google. I just remembered that the only one I ever handled went up in fifths. Deffinately looks inspired by an accordion, even the sound is accordionish to my ears. I bet accordionists would get on well with this instrument.

    I think you can't name it "synth" it's more like an organ. Hence it only has one sound with octaves. Did you mention that it is really a "amazing/great product/best product ever/a must have"?

    I think it would be a much much better product if it had a way to add sounds to it. I mean, even if you can only have one on it at a time, this feels way too limited. Like having a gaming pc where chrome is the only thing you can use.

    But.... a major triad would be to go up right then upwards. No? 🤔🤔🤔🤔

      A major triad is constructed by thirds: a major third from the root, then a minor third from the third. You're probably thinking that since a major chord is the root, the third, and fifth, you should go up. But it would be a fifth from the third, not the root, so what you said would be a maj7 (no 5) chord instead of the major triad you want.
