  • Meet some of the 12 student perfumers at Grasse Institute of Perfumery. In addition to having a passion for perfume, students must be able to distinguish and memorize about 500 different fragrances -- a tough task! We chatting during break time at Philipe Collet’s raw materials class, where we spent the morning trying to recognize and evaluate scents. I asked them
why they decided to go into perfumery -- a question no one had the problem answering!

I've received a lot of requests about the application process for the Grasse Institute of Perfumery. Here is the admission process for those that are interested. If you apply, let me know! I'd love to hear about your journey! www.grasse-perfumery.com/student-perfumer-training/

Thank you Jill! I am so glad you enjoyed the vid! My hope is to share as much of the experience as I can. Hopefully I can supply a little window into the world of fragrance. I will be onlining videos all week. They're a bit rough because they were all done live, but also, I think that adds value because you're getting a real, unfiltered experience. I can 100% attest to the fact that the students are as passionate off camera as they are when the camera is turned on.

Ohhhhhh God.....I actually don't have a degree in chemical things or chemistry.....does it mean I can't be enrolled for the programme?

Hi Barbra! The program is highly competitive, but you still can apply without a chemistry degree. Know though, they have a fragrance related chemistry course that students take as part of the curriculum. They also have their short courses which are much more accessible. Maybe you start there. Either way, good luck!

I am really enjoying the experience of being here with the students in Grasse. Every morning their sense of smell is tested! The program is 12 months and currently the students are in the first 4 months. They start formulating fragrance next week. The Grasse Institute of Perfumery program is taught in English, but is only here in France. They do have a summer program as well. I'll put a pin that links to both their year long intensive program, as well as their summer courses above!

I find it fascinating to say perfume is a good medium to express one self. I had never thought about it. It would be very interesting that you could develop and explore that idea with the other students if you have the chance. 😯

You know, I had a hard time understanding that statement until I spent the week with the perfumers. A client will come to you with a brief that's something like -- give me Alice and Wonderland. Through scent you have to be able to deliver the emotional response of a fantastical place with bizarre adventures. Over the course of development you have to prune away scents that deliver the wrong emotion and add scents that deliver resonance -- until you hit upon exactly what the client wants. So you have to understand how to translate a clients desired vision into a scent. To see them do it is quite incredible. I notice that these students can also describe everyday experiences in life quite well. They all seem very articulate, and are able to leverage language to describe a scent.

I was too! I discussed the possibly of coming back when the students graduate (December). The students will know how to formulate fragrances by then and we will see their final project, which is a fragrance creation produced according to a theme given to them. Very much looking forward to it. Thank you for joining me on the journey!

Luckily, I found this dusty old post I did on Facebook ---While in Grasse, I learned about Jean Carles (1892-1966) a French perfumer who was vexed by the lack of training standards regarding scent. He came up with an organized method -- known as the Jean Carles method -- for teaching perfume.
Trainees started by smelling dramatically different scents like lemon, clove, mint, jasmine, etc. I think most of us can agree these are very different scents! Once the identification and evaluation of those scents were mastered, trainees would begin to study scents in the same families. As an example, lemon would expand to the family of citrus. This means students would study lemon, orange, grapefruit and lime. All these are citrus, acidic, fresh, and juicy, but the challenge is describing what makes them different. This is where perfumers grow their vocabulary!
The nose slowly improves and with continuous work and practice. Just like musicians practice scales with their fingers, fragrancers study scents with their nose!
Phillipe Collet’s raw material’s class at @GIPGrasse was a huge reminder of that. The professor is infamous for his pop quizzes where students must identify and describe 10-15 raw materials they’ve previously studied. That’s in addition to the many more they will learn that day. Turns out, the workout needed for a more acute sense of smell is just as tough as crunches at the gym!
