My visually challenged fam: Do you run Rx glasses or contacts for ridings?

    • @TheBirchCreek
      @TheBirchCreek 2 роки тому +1

Rx glasses. Mostly just those I wear regularly. Another pair for longer rides etc. Used to have transitioning lenses. Now I also have a "sporty" pair with magnetic tinted/polaroid clip-ons - that works relatively well, but is far from ideal - I probably won´t get another pair of this kind, will rather go back to transitioning.

contact lenses. A setup like your Oakley could work, but the FOV is pretty narrow with the inner prescription lens. For multi-day trips I take dailies and wipe my fingers with wet wipes before putting them on.

I've just been riding with my Rx spex, but I've been thinking about this for a long time. Haven't found the right pair, and I'm a bit leery of buying a spendy maybe-it'll-fit-my-equestrian-head pair on faith and wishful thinking. Mebbe I'll hit Roka... BTW, a pair of readers is boss when something fiddly arises. thanks!

When I lived in northern latitudes like you are at in Portland, photocromatics were great. Then I moved to west Texas and with no trees or shade for miles, they just don’t get dark enough to properly make riding comfortable.

Hey Dustin, Great video as always :-). One thing to look out for wrt photochromic. They have to sacrifice range of darkness, they cannot cover the full range from very dark to very light. So.. I have several pairs :-), I use the lower range for cycling (for the Oh Dark Thirty starts), but use the higher range ones for skiing. I prefer polarized and just deal with my cameras (note the smartphones have very high tech screens that are not impacted!). My favorite glasses are made by Oakley and Julbo. Final note, you are young, :-) have you seen a high end opthamologist to discuss options so you do not need prescription? That would be life changing, btw. Thanks again for a wonderful informative video! btw, there is a whole separate topic on color of the lenses, which is 'better' (or more accurately stated, the tradeoffs)!

I have julbo ones that is cat 0-3 something like 87% to 12% of light is coming though. I guess for skiing in the mountains you are need cat 4 but at sea level while xc skiing in bright sun i am ok with cat 3

Rudy Project "Fotonyk" user here, with the Rx insert. Using the same frame for more than 2 years now, have both dark-mirror lenses and the photochromic, so far so good. Swapping lenses and having to clean up between the Rx insert and the inside of the lens is a pain though...

My go to is julbo ultimate photochromic cat 0-3 lens and anti-fog - very comfortable and good side vision on bike. Lifestyle/run/hike is julbo Powell cat 3 polarized lens. Also have a julbo blast with cf3 lens (also cat 3) not really like the frame comfortwise - it is kinda push to much on the ears if used over long periods of time - wear them in dusty/windy conditions since they’re tight to face and stop sand from my eyes. All non prescriptions

I've got a set of Bolle that I got from RXSport in the UK - they're bolle RX lenses and I've got varifocal in there... I've got a very strong + prescription and have spent years just putting up with what I could get for wearing on the bike. These are hands down the best riding glasses/lenses combo I've ever had and the first sports specific specs I've had that don't feel like a compromise in performance or my vision.

Alright homie, hope we connect on this. I'm 1:04 in, and we haven't talked about Protection category (High Mass or High Velocity, both matter at 25+ mph with rocks and trees) - Looking forward to it. And yes....RX eyewear with safety ratings that not only cover your eyes, but protect them. Like a helmet for your eyes. Seems important enough.

Will stick with my Rudy Project flip-ups, thank you very much. Dorky? You bet. Do they work? Far better than photochromics which (as others have noted) neither get dark enough for really bright light, nor light enough when it's dark. I wear them for anything outdoors: riding, driving, even just commuting when I have to walk 10 minutes in the bright sun.

  • @michaelcheng6469

  • @MrChuckmart
    @MrChuckmart 2 роки тому

I wear Rudy Project Rydon RXs and they are excellent. With photochromic lenses, these have become my any time day or night riding glasses, my work safety glasses, and my all day every day glasses. One little gripe is that they don’t get dark in the car, as they rely on the uv to make them dark and uv is filtered out by your car windows.
I’ve been thinking about getting another pair of dark (non photochromic) ones just for driving duty.
They aren’t cheap. But they are so good. And They are so very adjustable with the wire core nose pads and temples. Far more so than the molded plastic of Oakley and most other glasses brands.
    Rudy Project is top notch!

I’d also add that the weight of the frame + prescription lenses is quite important. I got a smith prescription set up and the weight of the frame and lens was so much heavier than my daily glasses that the bridge of my nose would get quite sore after a day of wearing. I switched to a prescription Maui Jim (very norm/dad core) with much better results. I did just place an order for Oakley Sylas with photochromic lenses so I don’t have to think about switching between my regular glasses and sunglasses if I’m out and about

I wore contacts for quite some time but find them a tad uncomfortable. I also had some RX inserts but they were garbag: made the frames heavy and slide down, would mist up and catch dirt, just not a great option. My go to now are a pair of Tifosi Amok direct lens photochromics. A bit pricey here in the UK but for almost all of my riding they have me covered. Look a bit full on when off the bike but they look fine when on it - I find they just do the job well.

I have been using Oakley Flak 2.0 RX version since 2017. Just broke a lens and am trying to decide whether to just get a new set of lenses in my new RX or go for a whole new set of glasses. Seems that none of the 'shield style' glasses that are so popular generally can't be done in RX... And the Jawbreakers have been around since before the Flak. I would love the mountaineering style glasses, but my road rides involve pacelines and people that are way too close, so I can't lose my peripheral vision.

Having the need for a prism in my eye prescription, it limits the type of frames, as frames with a pronounced wrap will not work. But switching to a full face helmet with goggles, I can simply use my narrow frame everyday seeing glasses, worn under the goggles. Thanks Dustin for the video.

Need prescription sunglasses with single vision photocromatic lenses that are more blade style. I need thick frames around the lenses - specifically no frame at the top. The frame at the top blocks vision when riding on a tri bike or an areodynamic position. I can't find anything. We like the Oakley EV Zero, but can't get it in prescription.

I primarily wear rx glasses that have a color tint (I've got a set of pink, and a set of yellow lenses). I tend to wear these as my everyday glasses but they work great on the bike as well. Prescription without photochromic is what I've found to work the best. We live in Idaho, so we use them for various sports in the summer and in the winter. Since we play in the snow the photochromic goes dark from the brightness of the snow even at night. So my best set up is clear prescription glasses and several pairs of prescription sunglasses. Also, my experience with photochromic is that they don't go dark in your car because of the UV on the windshield is my understanding. It's been a few years since I've had a pair of photochromic lenses, maybe they've changed this? Rock on Dustin!

Important with any kind of sunglasses is the UV protection. Very cheap sunglasses i ok ften use only tinted glasses that don’t offer any UV protection at all, in fact those can even damage your eyes because due to the tinted lenses the incoming light appears less bright, so your pupils will open wide (like in the night). But because all the invisible UV light coned through your eyes can get damaged.
Always check the UV protection before buying!

I like the idea of photochromatic lenses but since I mostly fatbike in winter in Alaska the cold makes them turn dark...even when it is already dark outside. Which is a lot. I have both dark polarized for the bright days on open snow and yellow/amberish tint for more diffused light. Fogging is an issue.

I don’t like photochromic glasses cycling as if it goes cloudy (U.K.) or stop off at a coffee shop it takes ages for them to clear. Because my eye sight is so bad, it can’t see without them.
Also have dry eyes and using the Wilex X BOSS glasses for cycling as they have a gasket to block out the wind which is great for winter wind and good because they can take my strong prescription

DK, I can tell from recent experience that there are some sunglasses that won't accept an Rx. That last pair you reviewed a prime example - size and shape make it difficult for an Rx, which means they provide that useless insert. Best to stick with an almost flat type of lens.

Good to know about photochemical lenses. I have been contemplating on them. They look completely clear in your video and they will come in handy in Seattle winter! BUT, unfortunately my eyesights are too bad for prescription sunglasses 😭

How did you get your pupillary distance details? Every eye doctor I have had won't share that part of the prescription making it harder to order Rx glasses online. I have tried measuring it myself but the pair I purchased through warby parker were always just a little off and gave me a headache.

I ordered some Rudy Project Rydon Slim frames with photo-chromatic prescription lenses and bifocals from Sport RX. They had me take a photo of my face, holding up a measuring guide that I printed off the website. They created the lens from that.

@@Colleenann61 Nice, I'm glad that worked for you. I have never tried SportRX. I wish the prescription would just include the pupillary distance. It seems crazy to withhold that information.

It's a real pain in the arse when you get older and your eyes change. I used to have to wear prescription glass all the time. Now I have to take them off to read or use multifocal. This severely restricts the choice of glasses available.

Wow, I normally just go with whatever $20 sunglasses I can find at the gas station, but I might have to get those Xandis if they offer UV protection. One thing i've noticed is that some glasses funnel air into your eyes and dry them out as you ride. It's hard to tell which ones will do that

I don't need prescription lenses. I am currently using Kapvoe TR90s, which you can find in many places online. $20-$30 so I have several colors, durable, look fine (like a compilation of Oakley's greatest hits), fit me perfectly, various options come with photochromic lenses if that's your jam. Say no to bootlegs.

    about photochromic lenses:
ive had two pair of transitions glasses. clear to black. im cheap so i got them at eyemart, and i dont replace them but every 2 to 3 years. if you are the type of person who doesnt replace them yearly, be aware that at least with both pairs that ive had, the transition eventually begins to wear off around the edges and gradually more and more toward the center to the point of when i finally replaced mine last week, when outside, i had about a half inch border of plain glasses with a dark center. looked totally stupid. ALSO, after the transition wears off, the lenses start to turn yellow.. so yeah.. i had a yellowed border around the dark center. double weirdo.
this time, i just went with plain lenses so that if i still have these a couple of years from now they dont make me look like a creep.

Jawbreakers prescription limited to just black or gray and even with that limit they put a stop on ordering prescription. Even local store could not guarantee that they will be able to order. Plus the inserts, they just look awful IMO and I bet will be a major distraction.
Non-prescription though spot on, look great stay on, don't fog due to vents and actually so clear I don't even miss prescription most of the time.
