- David Sanborn on sax, Marcus Miller on bass, Mike Mainieri on vibes, Neil Larsen on keyboard, Robben Ford on guitar, Ricky Lawson on drums, and the percussion of Lenny Castro.
R.I.P David Sanborn,
In my generation, he is the most soulful with recognizable screaming signature..a legend.
Sorry but brecker was better
@@ilanjusth8989you just have to come up with negativity comparing artists who have different styles, Dean Brown played with them both , the Breckers and Dave and never said anything like you did..
grow up.. don’t be a music snob..
RIP Mr. Sanborn, listening to your music inspires memories for me.
Hard to believe he’s no longer with us. Sanborn was without doubt my biggest inspiration when I was learning Saxophone.
David Sanborn,
Man with a horn,
So glad he was born.
Yesterday he died,
Today I mourn.
David Sanborn always lit up the room as a sax player, and I can’t help but admit how much this hurts. I can’t play the saxophone to save my life, but we will all miss David Sanborn, especially me.
David changed my life.
This is the kind of song that never stops playing in your head, it goes way too hard in the paint
RIP David Sanborn 🙏
Such a unique sound! His horn was his like a painter's brush creating a piece of art undeniably his own.
All it takes is one note and if you know then ya know. RIP Mr David Alto sax Sanborn ❤️
RIP Senor Sanborn.....
Marcus goes full Thanos in his solo and puts that Jazz to work. Sounds absolutely phenomenal!
RIP to the man who hooked me to Jazz one car ride in 1982. Thank you Mr Sanborn. Every live performance captivated me 🙏🏾.
this was before youtube in 1981 i never thought i,d ever see this concert it was a special night with al jarreau & randy crawford singing duets together
R.I.P Maestro
If I forget what life is about and who I am and what I care about, I play this loud.
Guurd Loord...what a fookin' smokin' band!!!! RIP David. Thank you!
Those were the good ol' days.
Amen and hallelujah!
The killing band, Neil Larson, Marcus Miller, Mike Maineri, love to see how David enjoys Marcus’s Solo…RIP David best sax player ever
Brings back some great memories, may he rest in peace along with some of the other great artist who have passed recently.
RIP David Sanborn.
Robben Ford kills it. I like everything Robben does, but I especially liked his playing in this early 80s Yellowjackets/funk fusion kind of vibe.
Yeah I agree about Robben Ford.
He's absolutely blazing on here!
R.I.P David, your music still in our soul!
I was there in 1981 as a drummer with a college group. This night was amazing. I happened to stumble onto Sanborn, Robin Ford and the Yellow Jackets while they were rehearsing and laying down tracks at a studio the night before. I had just finished a trio gig and heard this amazing sound coming from an open door, A couple of guys invited me and the bass player to come in and check it out. It was a total groove session. Unbelieveable.
WOW! just WOW! that had to be wonderful!!!!!
no
I agree, seeing these guys perform in person, was WAY BEYOND what you can get from a recording. Unbelievable SOUND SYSTEM controlled by recording studio professionals, sounded like a sound stage u will never hear in your lifetime.
If I’d known about this I would have sold everything I owed for airplane and concert tickets!!! He was at the height of his powers!!!
great story, I grew up with this record 'casino lights'
RIP David Sanborn, and the GREAT Ricky Lawson, from DETROIT,
Marcus Miller, one of the greatest bass players ever to walk the earth
Amen
Sanborn, Miller, Manieri, Lawson, Ford, Castro, Larson----Royalty!!!
Is that Neil Larson on keyboard?
Love me some damn 1970s and '80s David Sanborn
This outstanding performance could make anyone fall in love with jazz fusion.
You should already be in love with jazz. This is what Jazz is; music from the heart and soul freely express through all to make one sound one band
Ahhhh!!! The 80"s. When the funky alto sax players were Grover Washington Jr, Tom Scott and this man here. And on this video, David is clicking on all cylinders. As is everyone else in this band. Smoking stuff.
Couldn't agree more. What a great band, totally killer musicians all of them.
David Sanborn was the top flite musician on sax! His unique raw/raunchy yet totally under control style has been the number 1 sound and belonged to him alone! It wasn't till Kirk Whalum came onto the scene that that same basic style had a rebirth!!!! Robben is just super!!! ~ FORD ~ ............... HAS A BETTER IDEA~!~
👍🙂Fantastic!!! R.I.P. Ricky Lawson. Awesome drummer!
Back in his Yellowjackets days! I saw them live with Ricky at First Avenue in Minneapolis. An incredible drummer and awesome band!
I was there, I was 20 at that time. Marcus Miller was this young amazing musician that everybody was talking about at Montreux that year.. I remember that he played also with Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford. Amazing time..
Damn! What a band!!
I just threw my guitar into the D & R CHIPPER/SHREDDER~!~ iT'S ALL ROBBEN FORDS FAULT TOO~!~
40 years+ THANKS DAVID! Always enjoyed seeing you perform, meeting you backstage, so much fun. U were always really cool to me, and I know your band enjoyed touring with you so much.
Wow, nearly 40 years ago since I bought the Casino Lights album and have always loved it, so to see this footage is awesome.
Robben Ford has always been one of my favorite guys-right around the 5:38 mark he totally starts going for it, just beyond what he's capable of. The whole band slays-so glad I found this clip!
His entire solo is just a massacre, truly one of the greatest to every play the instrument
Keep then forever...... James Baldwin .
I was on this concert, and the Miller Solo changed my life. It was a relevation for me! And by the way: the whole night was legendary in Fusion Jazz.
Absolutely smokin'. Funky, funky, funky. Absolutely horrifying. What a band! And as always, Mr. Sandborn lets 'em play. Hard to believe this was 38 tears ago!
Funk Maestro's! This is truly the Shit! A hidden Gem from the Wonderful World of Jazz, This Star Studded Line Up! 40 years ago Lets take a trip down Memory lane, 19 yr old Bass Phenomenon, Marcus Miller emerges from Lenny White's Band & redefines the Bass & becomes the most selected & sought after Bass player on the Planet throughout the 1980's, Early on He cohesively teamed up with the Great David Sanborn, Together they transformed & gelled a string of huge & successful LP's, Robben Ford, Guitar extraordinaire, Fresh off of his successful solo Album, The Inside Story, Where Ford met & collaborated with drummer Ricky Lawson & Keyboard Wiz Russell Ferrante & The Yellow Jackets Band were Born, Michael Maineri Vibraphone Extraordinaire, fresh off his highly successful Wanderlust LP could play with the best of em, 58th st NY City Funk, Michael Brecker, Peter Esrkine & can't forget Keyboardist Neil Larson riding high off his successful High Gear Album, Unfortunately, They don't play Music like this any more! One doesn't appreciate great Music like this until it's Gone..........
Thanks so much for the history lesson
I use to go watch David Sanborn in Concert at “Humphries on Bay” in America’s Finest City. “San Diego California”. He does make a visit there once in still with the Guys. They like playing there because the venue is on the water and seats about 3,500 people.... Never get tired of David Sanborn
Thanks for the history lesson. What a blend of East coast and west coast cats. Those were the days.
ROBBEN! PURE FIRE!!!
Ricky Lawson is delivering a groove I've never heard on this song before. Dude is COLD. RIP
Bass saves the day as usual.
Bro, there's no day to be saved in here! As powerful and groovy Marcus can be, everyone else here is KILLING as well!
The Bsnd Was On FIRE OMG
I shook Marcus's hand once,
It's still trembling,
My life away.
Chapeau to both heroes!
Thriller Miller on bass🎉
A killer version with a killer band!! R.I.P. Ricky Lawson.
Nearly 35 years after - still timeless funky performance... - priceless !
What a band..I grew up listening to David with Paul Butterfield..
2:50~ Marcus solo awesome!😆
Mike Mainieri = Steps Ahead!
Wow, that's just great!❤
Dam a super band and on point miss them years
I am here cause of mr Robben Ford. Amazing as usual!
I play this late at night in my makeshift sound room and go into a meditative state of mind, and totally alleviate my built up stress for the day.
Robben's guitar sound has changed through the years - however, he always had and still has THE sound that other guitar players can only dream of. Which proves that his sound is in his fingers and in his head.
toomanygittars soule
Robben Ford could get great tone out of a rubber band stretched across a broomstick
Jazz Funks finest hour and its most colourful. So glad I bought the album that this track came from in1981
Happy 40th! May the Music bring us all together!
First ever performance of David Sanborn in Europe, he was excited, and the people attending too
Funky vibes still hot in 2021! 🙏🔥👍
@funklover24 Funky vibes still hot in 2022!!

David you ROCK!
Marcus Miller for years has been one of my favorite inspiring bass player. And he still is. But on here, he killed that bass solo. It was funky!!
robben ford +++++
Great playin of Robben Ford. Fantastic timing and very tasteful!
duanetwo any idea what guitar he is playing?
@@davidseriff711 Jim Tyler was hot-rodding strats for some big-name players by '81, and I think I remember having seen Robben Ford on the roster. Looks like 1vol/1tone + on/off switches for each pickup. It's a Fender neck, but the jack plate is top-mount, which I don't think was typical of Jim's mods. Who knows?
Buzz Feiton on guitar
Super
yea man. Dig it. I was there for this concert. Off the hook tight.
Fantastic quality for 1981, nice one! :-)
A great band! Wow! Thanks for posting!

i piu' bravi del tempo....bellissima esibizione !!!
2:13 Sanborn!!!!!❤
Who else first heard this song on the "Sunday Night Funnies" radio program on 104.5 CHUM-FM in Southern Ontario?
OOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEE!! This clip is BEASTING and this band is bringing it HARD! WTF!! Something about american western music and its mass appeal has changed. So much has changed and there is alot of 'artificial filler' out there. Musicans who don't play from the soul as well as use their GOD GIVEN TALENT. This is just one ex of pure talent, real music, giving and getting in return. What a clip. If this doesn't inspire you then I am clueless as to what will. Ricky Lawson and MM=Domination..
oh man that groove ....
Laying it down, my guys.
