swords swing faster,axes lose more durability if you use them against mobs and axes don't get more AD if you get a better version of it, meaning stone axe and diamond axe has the same AD
Axes do more damage, but swords can attack quicker, so it's mostly better to use a sword to kill things quick, and swords have better combat enchantments and sweep attack.

Wolves not attacking creepers was because of a complaint that people's pet wolves would keep on dying. They can't do the same amount of damage as a sword and cannot be programmed to hit and run.

Most of those facts are not true. Like if you're using 1.8 and splash an invinsiblity to a sheep, the wool will be gone too and you can find melons in the jungle biome and mineshafts
