Hi Mary, I highly recommend a species only shell dweller tank (specifically Multifasciatus) for that 20 long! I started one (mostly due to Prime Time Aquatics & a few others' recommendations), and they are so fun and interesting! Endless entertainment just watching them, plus if you take care of them they'll reward you with fry which I use to trade to my LFS for food and other supplies for my various tanks. When I first got in the hobby I had a few tanks and they were basically just variations of different freshwater community tanks. I do still love those style, and have one that I treasure greatly. But my fishkeeping enjoyment really took a leap when I added species-only and/or biotope style tanks. Just a friendly suggestion :)
@@Fogdiver69 Thank you so much Brett, I definitely appreciate it 🙏 although I know some about fish and aquariums, where I haven't actually physically owned different species to know about their true behaviors. I do enjoy watching their behaviors especially when it comes to a group of fish. I have been thinking about shiell dwellers.. I've seen a lot of people comment where they are just so fascinating and fun to have! Thanks for sharing your experience with me and helping me out on my fish keeping journey! I hope you're having a very happy Monday 🙏🌿🐟🌿💚🥰
@@Fogdiver69 yeah I see how Prime Time (Jason) could make you really fall in love and want to keep these fish... that's what got me interested in them too🤣👍♥️
Glad I watched! Let me know I was moving somewhat in the right direction with my tank. People keep telling me I'm doing too many fish, however most are small schoolers like danio and barb. Center fish is blue gourami. And a free clown loach which I imagine will need a bigger tank eventually. 2 dwarf frogs and a useless snail 😂
My current 29 gallon community: 2 panda garras, 1 reticulated hillstream loach, 1 kuhli loach, 1 powder blue dwarf gourami, 1 bolivian ram, 10 black neons, 10 glowlight tetras, 1 otocinclus, 1 nerite snail. Actually had 2 panda garras but 1 died from an injury sustained from playing too rough with one another and hitting a piece of driftwood. I would like to add another hillstream loach species and maybe another kuhli loach as well.
I have recommended beginners to start out at the 29 gallon size. Larger tanks are easier to maintain water parameters but most people don't have the space. I like using the upside down catfish instead of corys. The 33 and 40 long are great for schooling fish as it creates a shallow effect like a riverbank.
I am getting started with my 29 gallon tank and I am excited. I am using some of the fish you mentioned here. I do want 2 angel fish as my center piece tho. They are gorgeous
Think I am pretty close to your recommendations. My planted 29 gallon has one dwarf gourami, 7 Harlequin Rasboras, 5 Red Neon Blue-Eyed Rainbows, 6 Panda Corys and 2 Peacock Gudgeons. I also have an undetermined number of Cherry Shrimp and a couple of Nerite snails in there. The tank is very stable and I have had no issues for some time. Only thing I would change is to eliminate the Gudgeons. They are colorful, but you have to look close to see that, and they are not very active. I enjoy your site and steal ideas whenever possible. Keep up the good work.
In my 29 gal I have 9 Harlequin Rasboras, 8 Neon Rainbows, 8 Black Neons, 12 Bronze Corydoras, 3 Amber Danios, 4 Panda Garas and about 6 Otocinclas. The tank is thriving and getting more wonderful as the days go by. All of these pets have suffered through some really devastating ammonia spikes, yet they all survived. I have had these little fishy friends for 1 1/2 yrs already. I have five other tanks to care for too but they are not as heavily stocked. And right now I have a make shift fry system going in a cheap bin I bought at a store. It is 2 1/2 gals and I have about 20 guppy fry to move to grow out, and just added 12 new guppy fry to it. I have already raised up 9 out of 20 Corydoras and they are all doing great, spread out amongst all my tanks. I have only been in the hobby for 1 1/2 yrs. At 67 I am not sure how long I will be able to keep it all going.. that unwelcome guest Arthur Itis is a pest.
hey, i was wondering, based on online recommendations of 1" fish per gallon, the ones you have should be in at least a 72g tank. I was wondering how your tank is doing, and if you think overstocking was the reason for ammonia spikes or was there another reason? For reference, i have a 25g tank i want to stock. ideally, i would like to stock it with: 1 betta, 6 cardinal tetras, 6 rummynose tetra, 4 cory julii, 3 hillstream loach, and a bristle pleco. Total length of these is about 45-50in!
@@andreraffla5555 my ammonia spikes were because I did not cycle it proper[y to begin with. I have had this tank stocked like this for 3 yrs and it is thriving.
@@elizabethG633 that's awesome to hear. I can't wait to stock mine! I'm mostly worried about the bottom dwellers getting territorial but it could be an interesting experience.
@@andreraffla5555 Make sure you keep an eye on your heaters though. I got up one morning last week to discover all my little water babies were dead. The person who's phone call woke me up, asked me when I told her what I had just discovered if I had checked my heater. Well, I looked at the thing and it is 8 deg. The fish died from cold. I was sickened. So all I have left are my two 10 gal tanks, both are stocked, but I am keeping an eye on the heaters.
@@andreraffla5555 The 1" fish per gallon is really only applicable to beginners in smaller tanks. The problem with overstocking is mostly being able to handle the bioload. With plants and proper maintenance you can get away with overstocking.
Happy Monday! Love this video and the advice. I was thinking my 29 is overstocked, because i have 4 furcata rainbows, 7 praecox and three cory catfish., + more plants than i can count. I spend a lot of time trimming plants! I also have a population explosion of freshwater limpets and trumpet snails. Honestly, i actually met someone who wanted some of the limpets -- so i gave them some. LOL have a great week!
I love the versatility of the 29 gallon tank (j have 5.) i think a powder blue gourami and a pack of blue axelrodi rasboras would be awesome! Thanks guys!
Good question - I think all the racks were highlighted as I was building them. Pretty much any video where you see me adding sections to the fish room (a few years ago) I often list the specs of the stands I built.
Great video! Pseudomugil, the Blue-Eyed rainbowfish are great community fish too. P. gertrudae and P. furcata would be great with all those listed fish. P. luminatis are great too but they’re small so idk if they’ll be good with the listed centerpiece fish.
@@Mar21Rro No, the species Some Dude mentioned are small, no bigger than some of the fish that were recommended. The Red Neon Blue Eyed Rainbows do great in my 29 gallon.
@@Mar21Rro Pseudomugil rainbowfish stay small. The larger species have a maximum length of 3”. You’re think of rainbowfish of the genus Melanotaenia, Glossolepis and Chilatherina.
Great video! One thing to mention is rice fish, aka medaka is not livebearer, they carry their eggs outside of their body. There are so many varieties in Japan, wish we can get more varieties here:)
I have three Bolivian Rams, eight Cherry Barbs, two Emerald Corys and my mystery snail clan in my 29 gallon planted tank. Everyone seems to get along well, even with the rams having an occasional squabble. So far, so good!
I basically have a "nano" tank in my 29...Honey Gourami, 3 Ottos, 8 Amanos, 18 Embers, 16 CPDs and 6 pygmy cories (heavily planted) :-) Next one will probably be a Platy tank
This is a great video! And very helpful! I'm starting a new tank now that is almost ready to stock. Once I decide on my community, in what order do you recommend adding groups of fish?
Love this list! Sadly I have 37 gallon bubble wall tank, unsure if these fish would be okay in it and whatelse to add or subtract. And if the bubble wall tank can do sand or not. Thinking of a 29 gallon too. Have had fish all my life. Just unfamiliar with a bubble wall. Thanks in advance!
I have a 39G bow front and it's a beauty for a community tanks ... 3 dwarf frogs (2 albino , 1 dark), 4 female bettas , 10 neon tetras, 25 Amano shrimp, 3 zebra snails, 3 Cory and 5 female elephant ear guppy fry lol ... don't ask about the fry they were gonna get flushed so I took them home and threw them in with my community tank couple weeks ago 🤭
In my established 29 gallon tank I have 1 male honey gourami named Sonny. 6 green neon,6 Blue Diamond Head Neon,8 albino Neon and 4 bronze cory cats. Filtered by 2 Fluval 207 filters. It's been almost six months since I lost a single fish. I would like to move up to a 30 gallon 36in in length
My 29 has a community for about a year that's not what anyone says I could do lol.... a angel fish, koi angel, two discuss, golden cat fish, a loch, flying fox, rainbow shark, one blue dwarf, 3 of the tetra with the yellow and black fins, and 3 barb type fish that are blue with orange nose and fins and one chiclid. Yes know the discuss will need to move as the get bigger
Hey Jason my name is TJ. I'm looking to set up a new 29gal community tank. My plan is to get a 10 gal quarantine tank started first so I can safely add fish to my display tank as they are ready. So I'm thinking of khuli loches as my clean up crew. Then some black phantom tetras with furcata rainbows or green rasboras for my schooling fish. Next I like peacock gudgeons for my centerpiece fish. And if possible half beaks for a top dweller. My question is how many of each should I stick with? As well what should I start with and should I stock them in a certain order to help keep my tanks bioload to a "healthy" level. Love the channel and all of the educational and fun content.
This is the way my 36 gal is heading! 5 bolv rams,( oto, Corey, platy in qt now). But I also love my panda gara!! So fun to watch! I am curious though, you briefly mentioned no mystery snail if you go with rams. I do have 2 with my rams. What has been your experience? I haven't noticed anything adverse yet. Great vid!! Thanks!
So I have a 29 gallon and when I got my tank and started the hobby( 2 months ago) petsmart is where I went for mine. I got 3 gourami. 1 is the rainbow dwarf and then a flame dwarf and a copper penny. Also have a black veil angel ❤all are pretty happy. I think my flame has finally rot though and will be putting him in my 3.5 hospital
Great video. You mentioned 1 center piece, 18 schooling fish, 6 cory's and 1 pleco. That's 26 in total. Is that correct? I have a fully cycled 32 gallon fluval flex ready to go.
Great video. Very informative. I just bought a 29 gallon tank and am new to keeping an aquarium. I'm now ready to purchase some fish for it. These are currently the ones I'm interested in are: 1 Plakat Betta 6 Glofish Tetra 6 Cardinal Tetra 6 Adolfoi Corydora 1 Mystery Snail 1 Blue Eye Bristlenose Pleco Would these do well together? Also, can I add anything else into the community? Maybe some Amano Shrimp or any other fish? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Thank you for this video. I'm thinking about getting an aquarium (still in the research phase right now), and a 29-gallon Dwarf Gourami/Neon Tetras/Porkchop Rasboras/Panda Cory Cats set-up described here is almost the exact mix I was leaning towards. I do have one question, though: If I were to use Zebra Danios as one of the schooling groups alongside the Tetras and Rasboras, would there be any compatibility issues? I know they tend to spend most of their time near the top of the tank, and are active to the point of being rambunctious; are they likely to harass the Gourami?
I just donated a bunch of mystery snails to my lfs. They were so bad for my tank, but I also wasn’t aware of how many I had. I had bought four from Petco, and before I knew it…well I had a lot more. Apparently they were very happy with my tank setup as they had a lot of babies. However I didn’t realize what poopers they were! What was the fish on the left at 2:55? Looks like a betta but I couldn’t be sure. My 29 gallon community tank has three formal bettas plus guppies. I’ve been trying to relocate the female guppies before any more of them pop out babies. It’s so hard because they’re so fast! Plus I always feel guilty when I bring guppies to my lfs. They’re so pretty though! Endler/guppy mixes.
Hello, Thank you so much for your video. I have a 29 gallon and I have been looking for ideas. I wanted to have two goldfish, but a 29 gallon is quite small for them. I saw in your video the Bolivian Ram and I like them because they can grow at least 3 inches. I would like to have 3, so they have space to swim, but I am worried about what type of substrate. 1) Do I have to have sand or gravel as a substrate for Bolivian Ram? Thanks Kind regards, Angela
I am upgrading my 6 cherry barbs to a 29 gallon tank and I am struggling to decide what to put with them. I am only a year into this hobby so I want to stick with beginner fish (ie. no rams even though they are super lovely and I want one some day). I was thinking diamond tetras (same as red eyes, I think) but I also like mollies or platys. And I was thinking of zebra danios as we got my daughter a glofish tank but it's only a 5 gallon and her danios did not do well in there. There's only 1 left and we discussed putting it into my 29 gallon with some new buddies and getting her a beta for her 5 gallon. My tank would now be overcrowded so trying to decide what's best. The tank is not cycled yet so still have a few weeks to decide. I think I should rescue my daughter's danio so probably a combination that would suit the cherry barbs and the danios.
Hello, I do have a 55GL Fresh water tank. What would be options as far as how many center piece or pieces, Schooling/Shoaling Fish, Bottom Scavenger and Algae Eaters? Thanks for the great videos and inspiration. Awaiting for some awesome ideas for my 55GL tank!
I have a 29 gallon stocked with a variety of community nano fish and some live plants! Interestingly, the 29 shares the same (30" long x 12" wide) footprint as the standard 37 gallon or 20 long. Sometimes I think I might have been better off choosing a 20 long because even the additional height of the 29 is a bit too tall to keep my shorter plants healthy under my modest lighting setup.
I’d like to ask: are all yellow gouramis honey gouramis? I had a yellow one that ate three of my neons and the fish store which I got it from didn’t label them as honey gourami, just gourami. I’m wondering if mine was not the peaceful honey that everyone’s been recommended as a community fish. Thanks.
Can you keep multiple female bettas in a 29 gallon community tank with 12 to 18 schooling fish and a few Cory catfish or even some snails ?? I guess a better question is how many female bettas can I keep in a 29 gallon community tank with smaller schooling fish?
In my 29 gallon I have a gold gourami, endlers, ember and black neon tetras, kuhli loaches and a couple bamboo shrimp. Have you combined rice fish with cherry shrimp?
I have a female and male albino bristlenose in my 20 gallon and yes I totally agree they make a ton of mess but the nice thing is they don’t seem to eat their own fry which is nice.
Stocking question for you… I have a well established 40g breeder with 16 Pristella Tetras and one Honey Gourami. I have a dozen Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish in quarantine that I would like to move into this aquarium. I’ll be moving the Honey Gourami but I’m wondering if I would have any trouble with the tetras and rainbowfish (the rainbowfish are still quite young and currently about the same size as the tetras). Thanks!
I was thinking about doing a 29 gallon with cherry shrimp, 5 small mystery snails, a Betta, 5 corydoras, 10 ember tetra, and maybe some kuhli loaches but I don't want it to get too crowded.
How about a video on community tanks of different sizes but with the possibility of the inhabitants breeding, with the helping plants and hardspace for it ?!

Any updates on your setup? I think I might do something similar.
LOL
have a great week!
Sounds like a nice tank :-)
I love the versatility of the 29 gallon tank (j have 5.) i think a powder blue gourami and a pack of blue axelrodi rasboras would be awesome! Thanks guys!
That would be cool!
I have 4 female bettas with my super red pleco breeding group in a 29g. Lots of hornwort. It works🙂👍🏻
Thanks for the great information! 👌👌
Hello,
I was wondering if an angel fish would work as a centerpiece
I like to save them for tanks 55 gallons or larger.
Have you guys ever done a rack system tour or diy? I really like the racking system that I see in the background.
Good question - I think all the racks were highlighted as I was building them. Pretty much any video where you see me adding sections to the fish room (a few years ago) I often list the specs of the stands I built.
Good Morning.
Happy Monday 💛💛
Great video! Pseudomugil, the Blue-Eyed rainbowfish are great community fish too. P. gertrudae and P. furcata would be great with all those listed fish. P. luminatis are great too but they’re small so idk if they’ll be good with the listed centerpiece fish.
I think rainbow fish would need a bigger tank
@@Mar21Rro No, the species Some Dude mentioned are small, no bigger than some of the fish that were recommended. The Red Neon Blue Eyed Rainbows do great in my 29 gallon.
@@Mar21Rro Pseudomugil rainbowfish stay small. The larger species have a maximum length of 3”. You’re think of rainbowfish of the genus Melanotaenia, Glossolepis and Chilatherina.
Great info. Though wouln't put neon tetra's with Betta. They are notorious fin nippers.
We did without any issues but we also fed them twice per day.
I've got 9 pygmy corys, 5 amanos, 4 otos, 1F honey gourami, and an endler colony.
Want to try introducing my F betta at some point.
Happy Monday. Clicked 101 likes :)
Great video! One thing to mention is rice fish, aka medaka is not livebearer, they carry their eggs outside of their body. There are so many varieties in Japan, wish we can get more varieties here:)
You are so right! Ugh - and I've bred them before :-)
Community tanks are the best way to go if you loved to have multiple types of fish if you don’t have the room for multiple tanks
COOL VIDEO 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 5:25
Great options...
Thank you!
I have three Bolivian Rams, eight Cherry Barbs, two Emerald Corys and my mystery snail clan in my 29 gallon planted tank. Everyone seems to get along well, even with the rams having an occasional squabble. So far, so good!
Sounds like a cool tank!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics it's still a work in progress, but it's getting there!
awesome video
I basically have a "nano" tank in my 29...Honey Gourami, 3 Ottos, 8 Amanos, 18 Embers, 16 CPDs and 6 pygmy cories (heavily planted) :-) Next one will probably be a Platy tank
Doesnt honey eat the embers and celestials?
This is a great video! And very helpful! I'm starting a new tank now that is almost ready to stock. Once I decide on my community, in what order do you recommend adding groups of fish?
Good question - I would do the center piece fish last. The rest of the order doesn’t matter as much.
Kuhli Loaches Forever!!!
Sounds like you have a great community tank there man
@@k.iskandar thank you I appreciate it. I have a nice group fish babies right now. They all get along peacefully, school and sleep together
Maybe a 55 if you have the room…
@@simpleman5688 yes one day I would like to get a 55gal
Hi guys, How many fish total? Just set up my 29 gallon. Live plants (Anubis). Sand substrate. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Sara
The total depends on what you pick from each category. You can use the numbers I provide from each category.
My 29 gallon: a female Apisto, a school of Beckford's pencilfish & a school of rosy tetras, and bronze cory cats on the bottom
Yes know the discuss will need to move as the get bigger
hi, great videos as always! Just wondering if you think black skirt tetra will fit in the tank with Dwarf Gourami
They should be ok together.
All sound like great options. Which fish to decide 🤔 to get???
Quick add on to ricefish: they are not live bearers. Apart from that, nice video. Keep it up!
Ya I know that - haha. Oops :-)
Great vid!! Thanks!
Our rams have always picked at snails.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics oh no! Poor snails. Thanks for sharing!
60 gallon tank is the best or 216 litre is the best or enough to avoid fluctuations of the water parameter for quite longer time.
12 Tetra Cardinal
1 Molly
3 Platys
4 Corydoras
13 Glofish
6 Cebra
3 Guppys
30 gal tank. Any advice?
I might hold off on the Molly because it could bully the platy.
Great video. You mentioned 1 center piece, 18 schooling fish, 6 cory's and 1 pleco. That's 26 in total. Is that correct? I have a fully cycled 32 gallon fluval flex ready to go.
Sounds about right : -)
Great video! Could I put one shubunkin goldfish in a 29gal?
I prefer having at least a 40 gallon.
Ok! I can’t find a 40gal near me, would a 37 gal work?
Great video. Very informative.
I just bought a 29 gallon tank and am new to keeping an aquarium. I'm now ready to purchase some fish for it.
These are currently the ones I'm interested in are:
1 Plakat Betta
6 Glofish Tetra
6 Cardinal Tetra
6 Adolfoi Corydora
1 Mystery Snail
1 Blue Eye Bristlenose Pleco
Would these do well together? Also, can I add anything else into the community? Maybe some Amano Shrimp or any other fish?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
There's a chance the glofish might fin nip the betta, but it may work just fine too.
The snails are more interesting too me than the plecos. I love watching their eyes and how they maneuver in their world. It's almost alien.
When are y’all doing more video on peaceful cichlids that can go in a community tank like Keyhole, T-Bar Cichlids, and etc.?
I want to start a 55 gal community tank. Both my husband and I love guppies. Is there a fish that can be with them. In the middle level to lower.
Sometimes it works out. I tend to avoid danios just in case there are issues.
What about pandagaras,
Hillstream loaches or ottos in lieu of places
Could I put all 3 types of center piece fish you mentioned together and then put some smaller fishes to fill up the numbers?
I might not do that in some of these cases because they could battle a little.
Yea it is a plakat betta with a cool pattern
Ya, they can certainly produce a lot of babies in the right set up :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I donated all but one. They’re cute but that was way too many. (I had 23!)
Hi I don't know how many fish to put in a 29 gallon I want neon tetras, dwarf gouramis, skirt tetras, cardinal tetras, what else could I put in it
Hello, Thank you so much for your video.
Thanks
Kind regards,
Angela
I have used gravel, but sand would be better.
Hey - this may help! ua-cam.com/video/HHGP_bt92ik/v-deo.html
Hey - we did a video just like this for 55 gallon tanks too!
Ya, that's always the trick with those taller tanks. :-)
Hi if you can me tell if 6 sanke swordtails
6 Cory catfishes and 1 bristle nose pleco
would fit in a topfin 29 gallon tank kit Thank you!
You may have some fighting between the male swords?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics would it work if I put in 2 males and 4 females or 1 male and 5 females also am I over stocking my tank?
I’d like to ask: are all yellow gouramis honey gouramis? I had a yellow one that ate three of my neons and the fish store which I got it from didn’t label them as honey gourami, just gourami. I’m wondering if mine was not the peaceful honey that everyone’s been recommended as a community fish. Thanks.
There is the gold gourami, which gets bigger and much more aggressive.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for the clarification. Then I must have mistakenly obtained the wrong breed.
so should i get 6 cory cat and 1 algea eater OR one or the other of the options?
You could definitely do the Cory cats and either a clown pleco or bristlenose pleco in a 29 gallon.
Can you keep multiple female bettas in a 29 gallon community tank with 12 to 18 schooling fish and a few Cory catfish or even some snails ??
I guess a better question is how many female bettas can I keep in a 29 gallon community tank with smaller schooling fish?
Can you do one of these on the 37 tall. They are essentially a very tall 29
Are your videos primarily about fresh water tanks?
Yes - we don’t do any saltwater
Not for the featured tank but my five with the Killi fish in it would one Kuhli loach be a good clean up crew?
I think so!
In my 29 gallon I have a gold gourami, endlers, ember and black neon tetras, kuhli loaches and a couple bamboo shrimp.
Have you combined rice fish with cherry shrimp?
I can't recall ever mixing them? :-)
I have a female and male albino bristlenose in my 20 gallon and yes I totally agree they make a ton of mess but the nice thing is they don’t seem to eat their own fry which is nice.
Could I keep 9 or more sparkling gouramis in a 55 gallon? And if I did could I still keep other fish with them?
Yes and yes!
I'm getting a second tank soon a 29 gallon and I'm adding my Betta to it along with 20 ember tetras And 8 Cory's along with 5 apple snails .
I have zebra danios and rosey barbs with mystery snails, 1 bushy nose pleco
Stocking question for you… I have a well established 40g breeder with 16 Pristella Tetras and one Honey Gourami. I have a dozen Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish in quarantine that I would like to move into this aquarium. I’ll be moving the Honey Gourami but I’m wondering if I would have any trouble with the tetras and rainbowfish (the rainbowfish are still quite young and currently about the same size as the tetras). Thanks!
I don't think it will be an issue - sounds like a fun tank!
I love the Pristella tetras, I have 22 in my 60 gallon ..I'm adding 8 more in a few weeks . They school well and look great in large groups .
